The front desk guy gave us bar coupons as a comp and was super friendly. The room was clean, with a good desk (I had to study), wifi, and large TV and huge windows. If you like white noise when you sleep, bring your own. It's humid there. Very humid. The air conditioner worked well enough. The bathroom was small. The living space had a chair with a foot stool for watching TV or putting on your shoes. It was definitely a nice touch to think of these extras. There were two luggage valets in the spacious closet that we did appreciate. The bed was comfy with a load of pillows. I do wish that hotels would have King size pillows for king size beds. The pillows tends to be small and not very stout. The quality for the cost was great, though we would have happily paid more for a bigger room.

As a frequent guest of IHG properties, Holiday Inn Express is typically one of my go to locations…read more This particular Holiday Inn express is conveniently located near downtown Des Moines, offering complementary parking and even provided shuttle service to the state capital for transfers to the Iowa State Fair. We were pleasantly greeted and quickly received our room assignment. The room was a more contemporary design with plenty of space for luggage, work area, and a small kitchenette with a small refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. This particular hotel has been previously recognized as one of the top IHG properties, which is why I was so surprised to find many of the public areas dirty, being used for towel laundry sorts in the lobby entrance, and just not regularly policed for debris. At breakfast, we watched some of the hotel employees help themselves to food, which I don't really have a problem with, however they did not use utensils provided, and simply stuck their hands into the food buffet to retrieve food for themselves. Our room was clean, however, simple things such as black mold in our shower could've easily been addressed with some appropriate cleaner. We did observe housekeeping using lint rollers to clean hallway carpets rather than vacuums, which was a little surprising as well. At breakfast, we enjoyed a fire alarm, which apparently went off throughout the entire hotel. Front desk personnel told folks not to worry despite the fact that the alarm sounded continuously for more than 10 minutes and they did not know the source of the problem. Fire department did show up and remove some thing from some room that contributed to this issue, but it seemed a little , disappointing that employees we're not properly trained to understand evacuation procedures.

Hot tub. 2 tvs. Room was very clean and nice. Saw staff once. Very helpful and efficient. Called for the wifi password but it's unsecured no password required. It worked fine but I prefer the wifi to be secure. Checked out the pool area. Very nice but very steamy. Sauna still closed (looks to be going on for over a year based on prior reviews). Parking was right up front. We were not in the main hotel but the cottage next door (which is way nicer than the main hotel). The only 2 complaints were; our neighbors were loud and played awful music til past 3am.and we had a wasp nest in our room (which we took care of by shutting the window). As I didn't work the next day I didn't care to complain about the neighbors noise. We also missed breakfast be cause we thought it ended at 11am but it ended at 930am. We might have misheard.

The room was clean, but I definitely could have used Queen beds instead of double beds. The breakfast buffet tasted good, and was replenished somewhat quickly. Coffee was hard to come by in the weekend with all the people grabbing it randomly. The pool area was humid but expected with the temp outside. The boys had a blast swimming so that area was a hit. Overall decent price for what was included.

The lobby was beautiful, with plenty of places to sit and a coffee making machine that could make you lattes, mochas and even hot chocolate, which I utilized multiple times. The pool was clean and brightly lit and honestly beautiful. The rooms were clean and had that extra blanket and pillow in the closet that you always hope is there when you want to feel extra cozy. This Best Western is clearly run by hospitable, welcoming people who know what they're doing. The only critique I have is that the elevator buttons seemed a little old, but they were still working properly. I felt well taken care of, cozy and comfortable, and all at a reasonable price. I would stay there again for sure. I can't wait to have another hot chocolate by their fireside in the lobby. Keep it up, you guys! I had such an amazing time. We'll be back!

I just stayed in this hotel with my significant other over the weekend. The room and breakfast…read morewere fine, but there are a few things I definitely take issue with and the last one is extremely important to me: 1) They said they only have housekeeping refresh the room every 3rd day. When did this start happening. Isn't it standard hotel procedure to refresh the room daily? 2) They slid my invoice under the room door very early in the morning (it was there when I woke up at 5:45am) on checkout day. I am not a fan of having my personal information slid under a door. All it takes is a tiny bit of human error and then someone has bits a pieces of my personal info and certainly enough to start charging items to the room. And my biggest issue of all ... 3) The "fitness center" is a complete joke and cannot be referred to as a fitness center. I don't expect very much out of hotel fitness centers, but this was a storage closet with 2 ellipticals, 2 treadmills and a dumbbell rack squeezed into a room the size of a closet. There wasn't even enough space to get down and do some push ups or sit ups. It's a complete slap in the face to anyone who books there and wants to get in a workout. I actually had to go seek out a gym in the area, and pay them, in order to get my workout in when I should have been able to do that at the hotel since they advertise a "fitness center." If working out is a priority to you, completely avoid this hotel.

The beds were super comfortable and it was located right downtown near lots of restaurants and bars which was fantastic. The sink was outside of the bathroom which was helpful so if someone was in the bathroom someone else can still be getting ready at the sink. I was shocked by the full length windows we had which brought great natural light into the room and we event had a couch in the room to spread out stuff out and a mini-fridge which was great. Everyone at the hotel was extremely polite and helpful and the front desk was more than happy to answer our many questions whenever we had them. Parking is $30 if you use the hotel lot but we found free parking on the bridge about a 10 minute walk away which was great. The included breakfast was fantastic as well-a nice choice of hot items including eggs, French toast, sausage and bacon as well as fresh made oatmeal with topics, breads/muffins, fresh fruit and various cereals to choose from including the option for Almond milk as well as Orange and Apple Juice. I will absolutely be staying at this hotel again if I am again in Des Moines-I cannot say enough good things about this place!

Unfortunately, this hotel is badly in need of renovation. It isn't just one or two things showing…read moretheir age. Everywhere you look, there seems to be something worn, scuffed, stained, or in need of attention. That starts in the lobby, where the floors, doors, walls, and other surfaces have visible scuffs, stains, and marks. The same continues into the guest rooms. The woodwork in my room was scuffed and banged up, the carpet was worn and stained in places, and the couch was in rough shape. There was also an extremely strong acetone-like smell around the front desk area. You could smell it almost immediately upon entering the hotel, and it was very unpleasant. The parking situation isn't ideal either. The garage is across the street rather than connected to the hotel, parking is limited with no guarantee that you'll have an overnight spot, and it costs $30 per night. For that price, I would expect something considerably more convenient. Even the pillows were disappointing. They were extremely flimsy and squashy, and I had to stack several together just to get a reasonable amount of support. Overall, the hotel feels tired and overdue for substantial upgrades rather than just a few cosmetic touch-ups. Between the worn condition of the property, the unpleasant smell in the lobby, the inconvenient and expensive parking, and the uncomfortable pillows, I would not stay here again.
