Kinnitty Castle - One of the beautiful hallways

Ever stayed the night in a legit castle from the 1200s? We hadn't either until we came here! It's…read morethe crossover the history and comfort, and was just plain awesome! Located in Kinnity county, this castle sits atop a hill just below the Sleeve Bloom mountains. You drive through woods, turn a soft corner and BOOM, there's the castle. It's magnificent! Old Gothic style, dungeon and all. The castle is equally beautiful inside. There are dozens of rooms inside, all at different levels of the castle. We stayed in a big room up top. The view is the grounds out front was beautiful - a huge field, surrounded by woods and containing a ton of deer that just seem to hang out. The bed was huge - two queens side by side, so we slept 4 across (and one on the floor) and had plenty of room for everyone. There are four spots to eat on site. A nice restaurant, and three bars including one in the library, one in the dungeon and one outside. The grounds were magnificent. There are miles of trails out back, tons of small structures to explore outside, a lovely courtyard that housed an abbey and even a sport court for those so inclined. We also had afternoon tea in the front room. A wonderful experience with nice tea and lovely little sandwiches/cakes. They don't give it away, but it was less expensive than a nice spot in Dublin. All in all, this was a homerun! It's something we'll do again in the future and you should do if you're in the area!

Our view overlooked the deer and the horses. The room was clean and of the utmost quality. The service at the hotel was exceptional. We had great conversations with the staff. The breakfast was good. The dungeon bar was delightful. Touring the grounds was a pleasure. My son and his wife enjoyed the horseback riding. This is a must-stay for any vacation in Ireland. Amazing!!!!!

Kilkea Castle Hotel - Cool huh

Kilkea Hotel is a spectacular and beautiful property. The renovations to turn it into a hotel…read moreinclude some modern amenities but keep a lot of the historical charm of the property which I appreciated. We had one castle room and one carriage room for our stay. Both rooms were quaint and well maintained. The gardens around the property are gorgeous and wonderful to explore during nice weather. The only thing to note is that in off-season the main restaurant is only open on the weekends and the tea service is not available during the week. While we enjoyed the food at Hermione's, the day we stayed there was a group event closing the main restaurant so we had to eat in the bar area. Most of the activities are off the property which wasn't very clear as we approached the date of our stay. We ended up visiting the National Stud Farm (about 30 minutes drive) and the clay pigeon shooting (about 40 minutes drive). Highly recommend both activities and really appreciate the staff helping us arrange these activities. The downstairs bar area is open late with a delicious charcuterie and board games are available to use by the fireplace which was a fun way to spend the later evening hours. Highly recommend staying at Kilkea Castle Hotel!

The property itself is stunning. Plenty to do between golf, the spa, the gym, bird flying, walking around and great food plus drinks. We made the 30 minute ride to the outlet malls and loved that also. The proper Irish breakfast to start everyday was amazing! I wish they would bring that to the states. Thanks again for the hospitality! Cheers

Bunratty Manor Hotel - Broken thermostat and dirty filter

When we chose to…read morenot eat at the hotel's restaurant, she told us we would be disappointed, but not in a fun way. Our room had two nonworking lamps, which turned into three nonworking lamps. She brought us two different lamps that did work, but it would've been nice to have the third one. She said, "You like your lamps, do you?" Bathroom garbage had been left from previous guests. Street traffic and party revelers awakened me late into the wee hours of the morning. Not my favorite stay in Ireland.

So, our group had to venture to a nearby pub to order some food. We brought back takeout for a couple of young parents in our group that stayed behind with their baby. THEY WERE THEN BANISHED TO THE SITTING ROOM TO EAT THEIR TAKEOUT. Again, nobody was allowed to bring a morsel of food into their bar that was NOT serving food. There was hardly anyone there!! Just not a warm first impression. We were exhausted and starving, and that was a dumb rule. The woman at the front desk was not particularly pleasant, and she was also the bartender. Our room was sub par, cigarette burns in the tub. No extra toilet paper in the room when we ran out. And the broken thermostat was blinking the whole stay, begging for a filter change...gross. The china was also dirty at breakfast. The only pluses I will give to this place: the sitting and dining rooms were decorated well and the OTHER staff (NOT the receptionist/bartender) were pleasant. Owner also seemed nice.

Dromoland Castle - Another amazingly detailed hall

The event space was beautiful. We were blown away by the food at dinner the evening before and at the wedding reception. Our friends are still talking about the risotto, beef Wellington and the fillet. It's rare to experience fine dining at an event, but that's exactly what was provided for us. Our family has traveled extensively. We can happily report that Dromoland is the best overall experience that we have ever had in a hotel. The castle and grounds are gorgeous and meticulously maintained. Most historic hotels have fusty guest rooms. Dromoland had modern, luxurious rooms with state of the art fittings. Everything in the rooms was great, but the beds and showers were world class. Our guests were raving about their accommodations. The common areas were fun to spend time in. The live music was a treat. The food at the castle is by far the best food we had in Ireland. It would hold its own against any fine dining establishment. The bride and groom had an amazing dinner in the Earl of Thomond restaurant. I had the best fish and chips of my life in the Gallery and was pleased to quaff my first pint of Guinness in Ireland at the cocktail bar. Breakfast was an event in itself. The food and service were amazing. We commandeered a large table and spent a couple of hours every morning with a rotating cast of family and friends. The excellent staff took it all in stride. The activities were great- my family was captivated by the falconry. Jane's hotel tour was a lot of fun. One friend played an enjoyable round of golf and our kids tried skeet shooting- all were very happy. Many of us had excursions organized by Dromoland. The drivers were courteous and knowledgeable. The thing that sets Dromoland apart from every other hotel that we have ever stayed at is the level of service. The staff are charming and amazingly helpful. They often anticipated our needs. The attention to detail was awesome. The rooms and common areas were meticulously clean. Turndown service was lovely. The housekeeping staff would even tidy up chargers and cords when they made their rounds. The wedding and our extended stay at Dromoland was a peak experience for our family and friends. We can't recommend the castle highly enough. We should have stayed a few more days just to relax.
