Richard Blacksten and his wife had me crazy with desire to buy something, anything, from them…read more They are so charming, so friendly, so knowledgeable that I wanted some little part of the Relics - even though I had absolutely no need for anything in there. Relics is not so much architectural salvage as it is wood. Wood, old wood, raw wood, live edge wood, exotic wood, wood from homes built in the 1700's, bricks from buildings that are a part of the history of the State of Maryland, doors of every size and shape - even a casket handmade by Mr. Blacksten himself. Handmade tables - if it's wood, it is here! If you need wood for anything - whether it's decorative or utilitarian - this is definitely the place to go. The location we went to (417 McKinstrys Mill Road) is only a small portion of his inventory; he says that he has lots more wood back at his farm. And Mr. Blacksten will know a lot about anything you see there. He remembers where it came from, how he salvaged it, what is unique about the wood, and on and on. His stories and recollections were interesting and often funny. He is a real character in the best sense of the word. I truly enjoyed the time I spent at Relics and I am so disappointed that I could not find anything to buy. At the end of the conversation, Mr. Blacksten insisted that we take an old hand made nail; he just gave it to us! Where can you find someone so nice and pleasant anymore? Right at Relics in Union Bridge. I will be back to Relics at some point because I know I will have a need for wood and I will NOT go to anyone else for beautiful wood. If you can't find what you want at Relics, you simply cannot find it anywhere - along with a good conversation and a laugh or two.

Things You Love is a nice little antique store in a part of Reisterstown that's heavy with them…read more The store is an old, remodeled log cabin, and turned into a gift shop. The part of the store with the counter, the register and the high-end display items look like they might belong on Fifth Avenue - if they dealt in such things, I suppose. I found all of the staff to be incredibly helpful and polite, and were even willing to negotiate a bit on their prices. (I try not to push that envelope in such places, it seems and feels a bit tacky or low-class.) Most of the items are really nice, and the rougher items still fit into the "shabby chic" range - and are priced accordingly. The layout of the store invites you to explore, and there's not a whole lot of categorization (I prefer this method). The nice thing about the store is that A.) they have sporadic updates on Facebook, and B.) they're surrounded by other antique stores. While the competition are bit more plain, it's nice that you can shop from store to store. The other shops nearby range from very rough (found/discarded items), to true rustic antiques, to an auction shop/antique mall. I spent nearly an hour and a half browsing the store, and felt bad I couldn't walk away with anything - but did find a nice shelf/side table across the street for $15. If you visit here, and like what you see - I highly recommend Corner Cottage in Hunt Valley.
