Leroy's Auto Sales & Service - Waiting Area

DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. I was in Tupper Lake from out of town when my check engine light came…read moreon. I had the codes read at an advanced auto parts store and it read back that cylinders were misfiring so I expected it to be an issue with spark plugs or coils. I took my car to Leroy's and they called me back at the end of the day saying there were serious issues with the computer system and that there was nothing they could do for it. Said the underbody was so rusted that nothing was holding it to the subframe. Told me it probably would not get me home. When I picked up my car it sounded significantly worse than when I had dropped it off, I opened the hood and ONE OF THE SPARK PLUGS WAS NOT EVEN PLUGGED IN. It was completely out, right in front, plain as day. Anyone with eyes could see it, how does a MECHANIC make that mistake. I felt like they had tried to sabotage my vehicle, but tried to be rational and give them the benefit of the doubt, that is was just a mistake. As there are no car rentals or Turo in Tupper Lake, my only option was to continue driving my car and hope for the best. Not only did it drive me around for the rest of my time in Tupper, but it drove me 8 hours home, and when I took it to my mechanic at home it was exactly what I expected the issues to be - a bad spark plug and 2 coils needed replaced on cylinders 5 & 6. Very simple, routine fixes for a car my age/miles. Leroy's had me anxious that my car was beyond repair and I am convinced they intentionally left my spark plug unplugged in order to ruin my vehicle when it was simply a $200 fix that my mechanic at home took care of in 2 hours. Unbelievable. Deplorable business. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE.

I originally went to Leroys Auto Service for an alignment for my vehicle about a 1-2 weeks ago…read more After they finished it I received a call stating my vehicle is ready for pick up. As soon as I started driving it home I noticed the steering wheel was tilted to the left about 1-2 inches but it was indeed driving straight. (I assume they forget to put a lock on my steering wheel when doing the alignment.) On 1/10 I requested that my vehicle be looked at again and have JUST the steering wheel fixed to the original position. The service manager agreed and I told him I would drop my car off on 1/13 to have it corrected. On 1/13 I dropped off my vehicle and let him know that my vehicle was parked outside in the parking lot and handed him the keys. I proceeded to the lobby to wait for a ride home. About 5 minutes later I observed a mechanic enter my vehicle and do a small drift/180 around one of vehicles parked there and enter the roadway and accelerate at high rate of speed that prompted me to view my dashcam footage. During the video, the mechanic has gas the pedal to the floor, curses at me during the video, shifts my vehicle into neutral while the car is still in drive and revs it to the limiter, puts the car into reverse and shifts the car into drive while it's still going backwards, doesn't have his seatbelt on, almost ends up in the snow embankments, and ADMITS he had the car to the floor to the other mechanics and that it "smells funny". On 1/17 I returned to the business to show the owner the dashcam footage of his mechanic driving my car recklessly. He let me know that he didn't see anything wrong with the way he drove it and that it was a little "aggressive". I requested that he refund my alignment cost and refused and said he can return 100$. The Total amount was 240$ Copy and Paste this link if you'd like to see it for yourself how the mechanic drove my vehicle: Part 1 https://youtu.be/q437x4U2TC4 Part 2 https://youtu.be/6fWbMxzSVxA

Don't double up your jobs…read more They were supposed to tow my car. They took another call after already putting my car on the truck My car didn't make it to the garage until it was too late in the day on a Friday to be serviced. And this was after I had already tipped the guy. Not like there are a lot of options when you call AAA. Just beware.

During a recent business trip to Lake Placid, we ran into some unexpected transmission issues…read more After asking around, Hoffman's came highly recommended by several locals--enough that we stopped counting. Apparently, they operate almost entirely via text, which seems to be a post-COVID communication adaptation. I explained the situation via text with "Taylor"--though to this day, I'm still not sure if Taylor is a real person or just the automotive equivalent of Siri. I let him know we were only in town for a short time and asked if they could get us in ASAP. The response was quick and honest: "We don't do ASAP." Fair enough. That said, they did manage to get the vehicle in within 24 hours, which all things considered, was pretty ASAP. Unfortunately, the part we needed wasn't available through their usual sources. Fortunately, we sourced it ourselves through our dealer and had it overnighted. When it comes to car repairs, the old saying goes: You can have it good, cheap, or fast--pick two. Somehow, Taylor and the Hoffman's team managed to deliver all three. They got us in as fast as realistically possible, the work was solid (as evidenced by the fact that I'm typing this 1,000 miles later, well on our way back to Reno, NV), and the final bill came in nearly 15% under the original quote. That's a rare trifecta. Dealing with Hoffman's does come with a few quirks, but in the end, they're a small price to pay for honest, competent work--especially when you're far from home and just trying to get back on the road.

One star is about 5 stars too many for this place…read more I should have listened to my instincts when I first arrived here. The guy at the counter (store manager Mike Kearing) printed off my work order and told me to take it out into the shop (watch my step) and give it to the shop manager. Normally shops do not allow customers into the service area. Apparently the guy at the counter is too lazy to bring the work order into the shop. So I bring out the work order. The guy out there says "white letters in or out". I said out. He said "your husband must clean your tires". Really? Should that be any concern of his who cleans my tires? Over $87 to change 2 tires when the site I bought the tires from quotes $58 for them to do the job. The store manager (or owner, not sure which-the guy at the counter) claimed it took well over an hour to change tires that size (315/75R16), claimed they were a real pain (how would he know when he can't even get out of his chair to deliver a work order). Funny thing, just one week ago I had 2 rear tires plus my spare(so 3 tires) of the same size changed at Laplante tire in massena and it didn't even take 1/2 hour. Store manager couldn't find my keys when I left.....he had one of the young mechanics take me into the shop to find my keys". The 2 young mechanics (one of them was kind enough to tell me his positive experience with tires just like I bought) looked in the shop-no keys. They went back out and found my keys right on the store manager's desk right by his keyboard where he was sitting and couldn't find them. This place is a sad joke. So I was mad enough about just getting totally ripped off by this skeevy place, but it gets better. On the way home, my truck seemed to pop out of gear (it's an automatic) and every gear including reverse now acts like neutral. I had to get towed the rest of the way. My truck has never had transmission problems so it is quite the coincidence this happened before I even made it home from this sketchy garage. I'm assuming they knocked a wire or sensor loose, but who knows. So I have a truck sitting in my yard with new tires but now it won't go anywhere. I also have a much larger credit card charge than I should have had. STEER CLEAR OF POTSDAM TIRE! This place is creepy and a complete rip off. Update-I noticed yesterday this place also trashed one of my tires that would have been a perfectly good spare. What kind of "tire shop" can't break down a tire without trashing the bead? This place should be out of business.

Some highlights: * When I had to install a new clutch on my vehicle, an unexpected expense, they were very understanding on the challenges the high-cost job would place on my financial situation at the time. * When my wife moved to the area, they winterized her vehicle and did not charge because they said that the work they did was minimal. * They always break down multiple options when considering larger repairs and make their recommendation considering drivability and cost factors. It was always a pleasure going to for any type of service and I will miss bringing my car in to Mike and the crew.
