    Albuquerque turned in its head
    John D.

Are indoor malls becoming a thing of the past or is this one in its final throes and death knell? Maybe it's the inevitable wasting away effects of COVID. Maybe a combination of each of these. But for whatever reason over the past 4 years I've watched a steady decline of businesses and their eventual closure. Cottonwood holds many of the staples seen in most typical malls. Yet many of the big names are gone. Ben Bridge, the Disney Store, FootAction, Macy's, Cinnabon, and Yankee Candle to name a few. These have been replaced by more locally owned business - some great and others maybe not so much. In days past all shops were required to be open during mall business hours, the mall still has set hours, but shops are free to set their own. This means the store you want to buy from may be closed. For me, the tell is how many stores have permanently closed and for lease signs are taped over paper or wooden window coverings. There are an inordinate number of those. So it's nice for an indoor stroll, and a few specialty stores. But it's lacking in most other areas.

Needed a massage! Came here and bought some delicious biscochitos and red chili popcorn. Found a place for a massage. It was very much needed. This place is still busy.

Cottonwood Mall in Rio Rancho is a recent Simon purchase. The Simon Property Group owns 325 shopping malls across the United States, Canada, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Puerto Rico. It's a big, public company. But it still has the feel of a local presence in most of it's mall outlets. I initially visited the ABQ Uptown Center, Simon's other property in Albuquerque. I wanted to buy some gift cards for Christmas presents, so imagine my surprise when I found out the Uptown doesn't even have a customer service center! I found this out the hard way by searching high and low, calling security and admin (neither answered the phone), and finally asking a seasoned worker in one of the stores about customer service. She was helpful and told me that I would need to drive to Rio Rancho, to Cottonwood Mall, to buy those darn gift cards. She knew that Cottonwood had been recently purchased by Simon, and that they indeed did have a customer service kiosk. The next day, I drove up to Cottonwood and was surprised at the conventional nature of this mall. It looked like any other indoor mall in America! Some of this is attributable to the age of this mall, but I'm hoping that Simon will give it a complete make-over soon. The young lady working at the Cottonwood Customer Service kiosk was very friendly and nice, and complained a little about getting calls all the time about Uptown ABQ. Of course, she wasn't on that property, so couldn't answer most questions. She was working at Cottonwood! In addition to buying Simon gift cards, I spent about an hour shopping at Cottonwood. The mall was busy, but not as busy as I expected given the upcoming Christmas holidays. Pictures with Santa got the most action, as to be expected, I guess.

Per the event description, consumers were promised: the turtle Michaelangelo and Turtles would be present for a meet and greet, photo op, interactive games, and a special ninja performance. In reality, consumers got one turtle on a 11x14 stage with a simple backdrop of balloons. No music, no performance, no interactive games or activities and no other turtles. My family and I showed up at 2:50 pm, and were told by the event organizers that the event would begin at 3:30 pm. Well, there was already a long line of folks waiting in line hoping to get their photo op with the greatest TMNT. The line began at the lower level foyer (near escalators and elevators) and continued through the mall to the Mor Furniture Store. I estimated over 1200 people attended this event. I only identified three security guards, mind you, were inexperienced with handling a large crowd and could not maintain crowd control. At 3:30 pm, an imposter Donatello shows up and everyone cheers loudly and excitedly thinking the show was finally going to get started. Donatello began taking photos at the floor level with anyone and everyone that approached him. The families at the beginning of the line were confused, mad, and wondering why other people were getting priority when they had waited in line for at least 1.5 hours before showtime. A few minutes later, it became clear the show hadn't started, and rather, it was just another person wearing a Donatello suit and wanted to compart the joy and smiles throughout the mall with TMNT fans. At 3:50 pm, Michaelangelo finally jumps on stage. People swarm to the front of the stage for their photo op. At the same time, those in line were finally freed from their chains and let one family at a time to take their photo. Mind you, there was still no music. No other turtles, no other activities happening. Just a lonely Michaelangelo that appeared to have drank 30 Red Bulls taking photos with families one by one. My family and I got our photo from the front of stage, and left the area to go shopping with the intent of returning to the event in the hopes more of the promised activities and turtles would show. At 4:15 pm, we return but still there is nothing. Just more people moving through the sloth-like line waiting patiently to get their photo. I felt it necessary to express my extreme disappointment and the failure of the event on the Facebook event page, hosted by Cottonwood Mall in the hopes that the management and/or event coordinator's would take my feedback as a learned experience. Shortly after I posted my feedback, others followed suit. There were over 130 "reactions" on my post, and over 100 comments on my post. Everyone saying the same thing: poorly planned event; do better; my children left crying because the event ended 10 minutes early and they missed their photo opportunity with their favorite turtle; people reported waiting in line for over three hours! To say this event was a failure and complete disappointment is an understatement. However, listen to this - Whomever is responsible for Cottonwood Mall's social media account went to the event page and ERASED ALL the complaints and kept the positive comments!!! So, I am doing my due diligence and posting publicly on platforms that cannot be erased because the event planners and management of Cottonwood Mall need to be held accountable. I'll say it again as I did in my initial post: "Do better Cottonwood Mall!"

They have a little of everything from home goods to hobby supplies to gardening items. Chopsticks of all kinds, even the long ones for cooking, are available, and if you want to make your plate and bowl sets interesting, they have a nice variety to choose from, as well as bento boxes, food containers, etc. If you're looking for sauces and flavorings to up your ramen game, they have that too, along with a selection of foods imported from Japan, including some of the best instant ramen bowls I've ever had. They even carry a drink that's hard to find here on the mainland, direct from Hawai'i, Hawaiian Sun sodas! Though I've never had to ask for help with anything, the staff I have encountered have been pleasant and ready if there is need. Overall, if I had to choose between the DT and Daiso, I'd rather go to Daiso. Unfortunately, there's only the one store in town, so I save it as a treat that it is.

For it being a Sunday I have to say I was a bit shocked til I saw the Santa booth by the elevator and was reminded it was the holiday season so during the holidays they extend the hours. Anyways after walking around I found this shop. They had a lot of home decor, furniture, hand made blankets, apparel, geo rocks, novelties, jewelry, and so much more related to New Mexico. The blankets they had were so soft and neat, if I didn't have to buy Christmas presents, I would've bought one for myself. They had these dia de los muertos figurines that I absolutely fell in love with! The furniture they had was gorgeous! Wooden bed frames, tables, and even leather couches that were so comfortable and neat. The home decor items they had ranged from wooden sculptures to hand crafted metal figurines. They offered so much. Admittedly the prices were a bit high but it's to be expected for handcrafted products. The mineral rocks were gorgeous but pricey as well. Definitely didn't much under $10 but admittedly everything seemed very good quality so the prices I thought were fair. They are located where the old Zumies was by the elevator in the middle of the mall by the candle shop.
