Ahhhh Costco. The bulk buying daddy of a shop. After the husband obtained a Costco card a couple of years ago, we have really felt the benefit of using this behemoth of a supermarket when planning events. Firstly, let's talk about the process... I believe anyone can be a Costco member, but you do get discounts if you fulfil certain conditions (If you're a Doctor, Council worker, Teacher etc). You pay a yearly fee for membership and this can be applied for in store or online.
Before you enter the shop, grab a GIANT trolley (these always remind me of Bill Bailey's sketch with snapping twigs making him feel like a giant... anyone? Just me? Fair enough) and flash your card to get in.
There is a generous electronics department, office supplies and stationary, furniture, clothing, range of cleaning supplies and a toiletries section... but that's not why you're heading there is it? It's all about the food and drink!
Towards the bottom of the store (on the left) is the spirit and wine section. If you're looking for a litre of spirit or a crate of wine, this is a great place to head. You can get 6 bottles of Italian wine for around £25 (inc VAT) and quite nice bottles of prosecco for around £5. They have branded products (magnums of Moet anyone?) and their own label (Kirkland).
Their bakery and cake section is fantastic! You can get a personalised, decorated cake to feed up to 30 people for around £12 (this has to be ordered beforehand on the phone or online) and they have a great selection of pastries and other things to satisfy your sweet tooth. They also sell rotisserie Chicken and a large selection of fresh meat, cooked meats, cheeses, preprepared pizza's and meals and all sorts of other convenience food.
In the middle towards the right hand side is the soft drink, beer and frozen section. I've managed to find some really nice beer and cider selections here for a few quid less than you would find elsewhere. Be prepared to pick up things you didn't think you needed! I always end up scratching my head as to how I spent so much when I leave... and then look at my trolley which is filled with hot sauce, peanut butter, interesting drinks and an inevitable chicken and realise.
They have some import items (if you're into American or European chocolates, treats and sweets) and offer some convenient things (such as milk, bread, flowers) in store as well.
I think you would struggle to do your whole weekly shop in Costco, but if you're throwing a massive party and need supplies - I would recommend a visit! read more
