I've been to a couple Costcos around the world and they're quite unique. You may find local product offerings, high end luxury goods for sale, and food court menu items that you would never get in the states. Some random stuff I've found around the world are Rimowa luggages in Seoul, gold bars in Scotland, poutine at the food court in Canada, and clam chowder soup at the food court in Japan. When I found out Costco was opening its first location in New Zealand I made it a part of my itinerary when I went there on vacation.
The store was only about two months old and the locals are too overly excited to shop there. I went on a Saturday evening and it was an unorganized mess. There was a long line to get a membership, and an even longer line and wait just to receive your food at the food court.
The food court had some interesting items you can't get in the states like mango smoothie, bbq chicken pizza, Korean fried chicken, taro slushy with boba, fries and pork meat hot dog. The Korean fried chicken was baked and had the sauce on the side. It did not taste like actual Korean fried chicken so it was disappointing. The taro slushy was actually decent but the boba's texture was a bit off and not as sticky and chewy like real boba. The food is worth trying but not waiting 45 minutes to try, which was what happened to me.
You can get legit YSL purses there. You can even get Rolex and Omega watches, something they don't offer in the states anymore. Finding Rolex watches in stock around the world since COVID happened is challenging so I was surprised to stumble across them at the Costco in New Zealand of all places.
I noticed a lot of the bakery items like croissants, dinner rolls and bread are nearly sold out. There were a lot of people huddling around waiting for fresh baked batches of madeline cookies and dinner rolls to come out. This was a wild sight for me because in the states people would line up and wait for the $5 USD rotisserie chickens to come out, not baked goods.
Overall it was an interesting experience going to Costco in New Zealand. They definitely need to work out some operational kinks to make customer experience smoother. I think they weren't anticipating how crazy busy people were going to flock to Costco to shop. read more
