Although slightly more expensive than the average greasy-spoon, you do get what you pay for, as the atmosphere is friendly and the food is excellent. The small cafe is extremeley appealing as the decor is bright and airy, while the mixture of the French and English spoken by waiters adds to the warm and generally busy ambience. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the food is also mainly French, and equally delicious. As you walk in, a pastry counter greets you with inviting and tempting treats such as scones, cakes and freshly toasted sandwiches, and it's seriously hard not to jump over the counter and eat everything! A personal favourite of mine is the custard tart, which is always served in a generous portion, and the best I've had for a while, however the toasted sandwiches are also incredibly popular. There is also an excellent array of drinks- from mochas and herbal tea to chilled bottles of Orangina, Papillon manages to cover both English and French classics, and has something for everyone. However, the one thing that slightly lets Papillon down is its service- in busy hours it often is quite easy to feel a little neglected due to a small number of staff having to cater to the needs of masses of people, but when they are not swamped by a vast amount of customers, the staff are generally friendly and welcoming. Overall, Papillon is a great little alternative to the usual Starbucks or Costa, with food that a Frenchman would be proud of.

This recently-opened Chiswick/Hammersmith branch has bagged the prime spot right on Young's Corner where The Goldhawk Road meets The High Road. They've got huge windows looking out on the local traffic and commuters rushing to nearby Stamford Brook station. It's a great place to watch the world go by. Inside could be described as industrial-classroom chic, with wooden surfaces, metal stools and a selection of interesting lightbulbs dangling from the ceiling. Only a few days after opening it was already packed at lunchtime with people "working" on the wifi with their obligatory silver MacBooks. Is this what unemployed people do these days? This is the third T&P in what is now a burgeoning mini-empire, the new Wardour Street café being…read moreits first outpost on the more famous side of Oxford Street. The new coffee shop is the biggest of the three inside with a strip of skylights and what is now instantly recognisable for regulars as the Tapped & Packed distressed-urban chic. Someone, somewhere is lining their pockets very nicely with their sales of squirrel cage lightbulbs and faux-ancien clocks. And very cool water taps. But what of the coffee? Well it's no surprise that on the two occasions I've been since it opened its doors the quality is very much on a par with No. 26 and No. 114. That is to say talented (overwhelmingly Anzac) baristas pulling tightly-made espressos and offering an array of brewed options (pour-over & AeroPress) and teas. Has Bean and Square Mile beans were available when I was there, their espresso blend changes seasonally [if you want an indication of how in to their work these guys are, check out their blog: http://tappedandpacked.wordpress.com/]. The food offering at all three cafés - this being similar to the other two - has always been a little underwhelming in my opinion (making this more of a four-and-a-half star than a full five - but we're rounding up, so...). Pastries are fine, granola and (very) fresh OJ are on offer early in the day with sandwiches at lunch, but we're not talking Kaffeine-levels of thought here. Pity they don't have an in-house chef like the aforementioned; but one thing they DO have over the other two cafés at least is a toilet, which for this end of town - assuming you're not seeking the Gents for more insalubrious reasons - is a blessing. In short, it's a brilliant space, with excellent coffee and friendly faces all round. And a toilet. Let's hope the tentacles of this multi-talented beast spread even farther afield in the future.

The new Tapped & Packed on TCR has opened its doors for business - and it's a beaut…read more Only a stone's throw (... or perhaps a small catapult) away from its older sister coffee shop on Rathbone Place, the new café has a strangely familiar, but still altogether different, vibe. Sitting on a corner site near-ish Warren Street tube, the interiors are nicely done - the shop footprint has given the owners less space to play around with but the whole place seems so open thanks to a double-height ceiling and huge windows on two sides. The pared-down effect fixtures and fittings are very similar to the original T&P, from the surfaces and tables down to the awesome little spoons. The baristas are as talented as ever; an early morning pour-over training session was being held to ensure coffee as good as you'd come to expect in the area. The offerings are as before, filter coffees taking to the stage alongside (as opposed to acting as a supporting cast to) the usually more ubiquitous espresso-based versions. I ordered a flat white and some banana bread (which although not as accomplished a breakfast item as Kaffeine's dreamy toasted wonder) was still lovely. I followed this with an espresso on my way out, and although I didn't enquire as to the beans used, it was gorgeous - powerfully fruity with hints of chocolate and raspberries. The place also lays claim to what I believe must be the coolest water tap in London (nay, the UK... or even Europe - possibly the World?!). Ask for a glass and the barista will hand you a small frosted duralex number and point you towards the source - a very fine, looped copper pipe with a mini-red US firefighter style red handle on it. The water comes out at room temperature, which is the reason for keeping the glasses chilled I suppose, but it adds a level of quirky fun to an already excellent coffee shop. I guess I can only curse my misfortune for having moved out of the area (having lived at 72 TCR - so close!!) and am therefore unable to call this my local coffee house - but with friends still in the area I have an excuse to frequent this place more than could ever be deemed neccessary! 5/5 is a no-brainer - roll up, order a perfectly-made coffee from one of the friendly baristas and snicker at the blissfully ignorant pedestrians strolling past outside, 20oz take-away coffee cups in hand with that silly green mermaid on the side whilst you sit pretty inside T&P. You have a reason to feel smug... sheer coffee bliss.

A really lovely atmosphere, especially on this less-than-lovely stretch of Tottenham Court Road…read more I'm one of the many students who wander about in this area and I appreciate a beautiful, non-chain alternative to the uni café or the local Starbucks. The coffees are all in order, if a tad pricey -- worth it for the atmosphere. The cakes are a bit hit or miss -- go for the lemon and poppyseed, skip the carrot cake. The teas are served with adorable souvenir teaspoons from around the UK (see the image I posted) -- reminds me of having tea at my my grandmother's who also collected these odd little things. Mostly, though, I just really dig the inside of this place. Minimalist, neat, warm, welcoming. Staff are lovely. And you can watch the businessmen and students hurry by on Tottenham Court Road while you sit and sip your tea and read the Guardian left behind by a considerate customer.
