My usual barber takes about 10 mins to cut my hair and cost almost 3x more. Per their website, they do haircuts from 10 am - 2 pm Tuesdays to Thursdays only. For this place, you checkin and pay at one place and walk 6 doors down to their barber shop. When I arrived, there was a wait. When they were ready for me, I took the chair and the student began his work. From time to time, the teacher came by and inspected his work. Sure, it took a bit longer but my cut looked good. For those living in or near SLO, this establishment is conveniently located on South Street between Higuera and Broad Streets (much closer to Higuera). There is also plenty of free parking, so no worries. The facility is clean, bright and has all the trappings of a Beauty Salon. Lots of "Stations" on the general floor which one can clearly see from the front windows. I don't know if walk-ins are taken because I called ahead and set an appointment time. Student Cosmetologist, as well as, Student Barbers are available to complete the patron's desired services offered, which are listed on the clearly visible Pricing Board. I prepaid at the Reception Desk and waited less than 5 minutes to be taken back by a Student Barber (Alex) to a Station for my haircut service. He was polite and interested in what I had in mind for the cut. The "most fabulous Instructor", Ivan Q. appeared by the time I had finished explaining to Alex the hair cut I had in mind...and he queried Alex regarding my request. Alex explained and Ivan Q. then confirmed that with me. Super professional! The most fabulous Instructor "Ivan" Q. discussed the methodology to be used to achieve the desired results and Alex (Barber Student) went to work. Unfortunately, my hair isn't a lush forest...ya, I'm not the head of hair I used to be many years ago...nevertheless, Alex seemed to be determined "to lead me to the promised land" and give me my desired result. The hair cut took really no more time than expected and that included the occasional check-ins by the fabulous Instructor "Ivan" Q. to make sure the execution was going to be spot on. Thank-you Ivan Q. and Kudos Alex...I know you will be successful in your new vocation, and I will most certainly be back for a cut actually "worth the price" at the SLO Beauty College. I couldn't believe my eyes. This is state-of-the-art facility with high ceilings and industrial exposed tubing on the ceiling. It's modern and shiny with 20 or so stations for hair in the center of the room and a long row of nail stations along the right side. Stairs take you up to the classrooms and treatment room for facials. The old facility was built around the time of the PHF (the SB County loony bin). It was institutional, evoking Suzanne Vega's "Institution Green." The work was always excellent, though. Good product and well-trained students nearly ready to graduate. The prices are unbelievable. I had a "premium" facial with Lauren. It took 65 or so minutes and the sheets on the reclining bed were incredibly soft. The steam felt fantastic. There are no curtains separating the beds and everyone speaks in a whisper, so it's quite peaceful. I have clear skin but it's been about 18 months since my last facial. I have no pimples or skin problems but facials are important for evening out skin tone. For people who need extensive extractions, facials will result in clearer skin. Those who don't hydrate properly with product will also benefit. But I am pretty hydrated (Tatcha cleanser, exfoliator, moisturizer, Erasa Skincare anti-aging serum, and Faces by Liliana toner and eye cream) .So for me, it was ultra hydration plus a radical improvement in skin tone. I am going to go this week, if possible, for a blowout or updo. The hair services are staggeringly inexpensive. A French braid for $11 (long hair) and updo for $26. I wish Gov Hair Product (or French Laundry) had opened this sooner. I will be back regularly until I move back to New York. What a joy! 10 stars! (And Lauren is fantastic!)
