I had expected this to be a full-out club, with lots of dancing involved, but most people were eating and drinking, and listening to the live music (a really good cover mini-band). They have a pretty good selection of alcohols, especially liquors, including their own special mixes, which are really quite good (but unless you can really hold your alcohol, stay away from the blue drink for it can render many KO, especially if you've already "sampled" from a number of their other "poisons."). I haven't tried any of their food yet, but from what I could tell from the tables around us, it certainly looked appetizing. The place didn't start to really get packed till 11 pm/midnight, but nothing too rowdy (at least there were no fights that broke out, which is usually a pretty good sign). The decor is steampunk style, which I personally love, but not overly done (of course, since I didn't get to explore the inside rooms, I don't know if they laid it on thick there or not). The two things I didn't like were (1) the wooden floor that makes up the patio--the boards are not set one next to the other so that those who wear thin high-heels will most definitely get them stuck in there (I can tell it's a guy who designed this, like so many other things in Brussels), and (2) being outside, you're of course subjected to another population, this one much smaller than you are, but that still manages to annoy you: bug. Mosquitoes, check. Flies, check. Ants, check, check, check! (Especially if one of your friends has happened to spill his of the semi-sweet drink all over the place.) There is also a taxi service you can get there (to compensate for the fact that the club is somewhat out in the middle of nowhere), which is great if you've happened to have had a little bit too much to drink. The staff was pleasant, though perhaps a little overwhelmed when the crowds came in. But my friends and I definitely had a great time and will for sure come back here for another great occasion!

Just think of all the factors that must fall into place - the band's tour dates, availability of tickets, and proximity to the venue. It's pretty much the ultimate trifecta of coincidence. As it turns out, I am that lucky person - someone who was gifted a Hot Chip ticket to a sold-out Saturday night show in Brussels! Because I wanted to live like a local, I took the metro instead of a cab. And then walked. And walked some more. Gosh, Belgian maps are difficult to read. Of course, I found it. Ancienne Belgique is this beautiful, contemporary music venue that feels spacious with its soaring ceilings but in actuality, the capacity makes it quite intimate. In fact, I didn't think I'd have a shot at running into some new friends who were also going to the show but alas, I found them by the first bar I set my thirsty sights on. Luck strikes yet again! The sound quality is superb. If you prefer to drink while watching your favorite band take the stage (yes!), then angle for a space on the floor near one of the doors. That's how the savvy Belgian boys do it anyway, and I was right there to capitalize. If you'd rather take a seat, there's 'romantic' seating in the back and then there's also two levels of terrace. The bars work on a token system so make sure to head there first. And if you have a coat or anything else you'd prefer to dump during the show, head downstairs and grab a locker for €1. The concert venue Music centre TRIX is located just outside the heart of the city and is only a 15 minutes tram ride away from Antwerpen - Centraal railway station (tram 10 Wijnegem and get off at "Borgerhout Hof ter Lo"). U won't find any top-billed artists on the stage. The TRIX is known for its alternative music profile and with a standing capacity of 1100, it brings u face-to-face with the entertaining live shows starring Amanda Palmer or Emilie Autumn's fantasy rock. The American pop rock band OneRepublic, the rap metal band Limp Bizkit and the Belgium singer Stromae all performed sold out shows at TRIX!

The tables are very close together, as they must like to pack them in for the performances. They have more chairs stacked in the corner, though there was no more space to put people in those chairs. You have to go to the bar for service when there is a performance, which becomes problematic as it gets more crowded. There is a sign that requests silence during performances, though there were several who were chatting quietly throughout. There's a nice little courtyard for the smokers, which is covered in the evenings. They have a few snacks, but it's all about the beer and drinks.

I don't speak French, but dance and jazz music is universal...and plus all the ladies I approached for a dance spoke English well enough, and fortunately none rejected my offer. The DJ played all the best jazz songs from the 20s-60s. The hardwood dance floor is smooth and spacious, so its never too crowded. The friendly bartender served cheap draft beers and moderately priced cocktails. The ambiance is charmingly vintage but casual at the same time. No cover charge... I love it! Wednesday night is college hip hop night...this is a bit weird for a 40 year old, but being American I went along with it. Plus there was no cover charge. Marj C. was right when she wrote this bar was a mix of "vaudeville meets rogue pirate hangout." It was awesome in every sense of that description. On top of that, the number of different types of beers and shots available was astounding and cheap! Beer on tap was 2€. "Fancy" Trappistes Rochefort beers were 4€, and they mixed countless shots-- including SPECULOOS SHOTS!
