In many cases you walk by, admire from a far, take a picture and move on. Well, this wasn't the case. Mackays Guest House, right in the heart of Oban picturesque waterfront. A beautiful property run by Iona Mackechnie who was the sweetest and loving soul. A warm Scottish smile greeted us upon arrival. Checking in was quite a breeze. Once inside, the foyer with its soothing calm beachy vibe and tartan pattern. Beautiful cool tones on the walls and throughout the property. We had room number 1 which was one of the ones downstairs. Once you walk in, it's pretty massive and spacious. Modern vibe with its cleans line and cool color palettes perfectly suitable for the sea. Nice comfortable bed awaits you as well as two plush comfortable sling back chairs with the million dollar view of the waterfront. Heater fireplace in front of the bed for those chilly nights which is a given. As well as the flatscreen television above. You also have your en-suite which is nice as a lot of places don't offer them. It's pretty spacious with plenty of room for sharing. Walk in shower, all your toiletries offered. To top it off, the warm Scottish welcome of their traditional drink the irn-brn soda and tea cakes were on the dresser. What a sweet little welcome treat. Location is just minutes from the beach. Walking distance from the main town where plenty of restaurants and shops are. The ferry and train station. There's parking available right in front but based on first come. Street parking also available along the front but not quite sure what the restrictions are. Mackays Guest House is a must if you're looking for a quaint weekend getaway or for a longer stay for that nice R&R break. Perfect location, friendly face, beautiful view of the waterfront, minutes from town and restaurant. An overall amazing experience. Highly recommend.

There isn't really a common area to hang out in, other than the breakfast room in the morning. And that is kept at a minimum as breakfast is served from 8-9am. Our room (Room 4) looked out at Oban Bay. Which was very nice. After returning from dinner in town - which is a short walk away - we just sat in front of the great bay window in our room, drank tea, read, and watched boats sail by. The room was rather large and nicely decorated. Not only did our room have the window sitting area, it also had a separate sitting area between the king size bed and bathroom. Parking is onsite and very easy. We would definitely stay here again. Breakfast in the

Remember the thing your mom told you after you got dressed and put on all your jewelry? She said…read moreyou should look in the mirror and then take one piece off . . . .not to look to "overdone". Alltavona Guest House should follow this advice as this B&B, instead of looking charming, really just looked cluttered. So cluttered, in fact, that because of the quantity of furniture that was shoved into my room, I couldn't open the armoire door to hang my clothes as the bed stand was in the way. So they stayed in the suitcase. But that wasn't the half of what was wrong with this place. When we checked in, the proprietor, Carol, was no where to be found. A young man welcomed us but basically didn't know anything other than to hand us our key and to tell us that our water view room had been switched for one that was not. Huh? I never did see the owner during the two days that I was there. Odd for a B&B. The room we got had a small bathroom shoved into the corner with louvered closet doors on it. I won't go into the detail on these doors but the handles were dirty. Ick! And the bed was covered with what looked like my grandmother's bedspread and way too many pillows which quickly were removed to the top of the armoire. But the thing that pushed me over the edge with this place wasn't the clutter. It wasn't the small bathroom (with no soap provided) or the huge black spider that dropped down on me when I closed the drapes (insert yell here!) No. I could live with all of that. What pushed me over the edge was that after being out all day, to come back to my room to see that the cleaning team did not lock the door after themselves when they cleaned my room. So any money that I left in the room, my passport and other valuables were "up for grabs" given there was no place to lock anything up in this place. That is just bad business. Thankfully nothing appeared to be missing but it could have been a disaster. The positives? The bed was actually comfortable and the breakfast was pretty good with both cold cereals and hot entrees each day. But i can't let it go that someone would be so careless about the things that I entrust to them. That made all the other things just so much worse.

Wellpark House - Our view of the side of the building next door

We were on the first floor so if I wanted a sea view, I just walked across the hall to the spacious lounge. The WiFi was better there as well. It's located just 10 mins walk to downtown Oban and maybe 15 mins to the ferry terminal. It's a Victorian guesthouse so the doors squeak and the floors creak, minor quirks really. There isn't a lift. There's also very little horizontal space in the bathroom to put your stuff but that's fairly typical of many old guest houses. The only complaint I have is the lighting in the hallways is very dim for someone like me with very poor vision. I was always worried about falling down when making my way down the multiple steps and stairs in the dim light. Breakfast was in a spacious room on the ground floor. There are starters of cereal, fruit, yogurt and juices. Hot food - eggs, porridge, bacon, sausages, etc - is cooked to order but only takes a few minutes. Coffee is really good. The staff is just wonderful and will do what it takes to make you happy. We enjoyed our stay here and hope to return.

When we arrived, we were given a quick rundown of the house rules as it is more like a bed & breakfast than a regular hotel. We lugged our bags up the stairs and into very tiny, but cozy rooms. The room ambiance was definitely dated, but homely. The beds and pillows were comfy and supportive. All sheets and towels were perfectly clean. The bathrooms were super cramped but had recently been remodeled with new fixtures and flooring. Everything was spotless and worked perfectly. Hot water was ample. At night, everything was dead quiet and peaceful. The only issue I had was that the WiFi was painfully slow in our room. It ended up being a blessing, as I just spent more time outside enjoying Oban - one of the most tranquil, gorgeous towns I've traveled to. In the morning, there was a very nice breakfast provided. You could do a traditional Scottish breakfast, which is hearty and massive. Overall, I was very happy with our stay here.
