I enjoyed having that, but you could easily come through on your own without a guide and be fine. Our guided tour was about 90 minutes, but you could also stay as long after as you desired. We ended up staying about another hour to catch some of the things the tour didn't stop at. Note that you cannot take photos inside. If you are visiting Madrid, the Royal Palace is an absolute must-see. It is an amazing space that…read morefeels less like a museum and more like a living testament to Spanish grandeur. The palace is very interesting and full of history, sitting on the site of an old 9th-century fortress and reborn in the 18th century after a massive fire.  The scale of the building is almost hard to wrap your head around. It actually has 3,400 rooms (3,418 to be exact!), making it the largest royal palace in Western Europe. Thankfully, the visitor route is easy to follow, and we made it through about 35 rooms, which was just enough to see the highlights without feeling completely overwhelmed. Each room is more jaw-dropping than the last--from the velvet-draped Throne Room to the stunning frescoes on the ceilings.  I highly recommend visiting with a tour guide. Not only do they provide the context that brings the tapestries and armor to life, but it's the best way to avoid the long lines that wrap around the Plaza de la Armería. Having a pro lead the way made the entrance seamless and ensured we didn't miss the "hidden" stories behind the Royal Pharmacy and the Grand Staircase. Whether you are a history buff or just want to see some of the most beautiful interiors in the world, don't skip this. It was easily the highlight of our time in the city!

They said we had to buy new ones and request a refund for the tickets we had purchased already. Now two weeks later and I have yet to hear back from their team regarding my request. Came here for the 10:30pm flamenco show, having reserved online a few days in advance. 40 euros gets you in to the show and includes 1 drink. It may seem a bit pricey (there are cheaper options in the city for sure), but it is 100% worth it if you want to see authentic flamenco in an intimate space. The seating area is not huge, but best of all, seats are kind of on an angle. So even if you are near the back, you can see the footwork. This is really great, because so many flamenco tablaos I went to in Andalucia were really cramped and basically if you are not in the front few tables, you cannot see any of the dancers' feet. Anyways, the calendar on the website will tell you who is dancing and who is performing on guitar and cante (singing). They get a lot of excellent artists here. The performance had one intermission and went until ~midnight. The dining area is at the front and the stage and performance space are in a smaller separate room in the back. Servers bring the drinks to you so you don't have to get up to go to the bar. Like many places in Spain, once you sit down you get a little bowl of nibbles, such as nuts. Overall, an incredible and moving experience with top notch performers. Plus, the location is very central, just a few blocks from Puerta del Sol. Because of the location perhaps, there will be a fair number of foreigners in the audience, but rest assured that what you are seeing here is the real deal.

In the 1960s, Egypt was building the Aswan High Dam, which was going to flood a huge area full of ancient Nubian monuments. UNESCO launched an international campaign to help save them, and a bunch of countries, including Spain, stepped up with money, expertise, and support to relocate temples and preserve cultural heritage. As a thank-you, Egypt gifted the Temple of Debod to Spain in 1968. Other countries got temples too. Italy got the Temple of Ellesyia, the Netherlands got the Temple of Taffeh, and the U.S. got the Temple of Dendur, now in The Met in NYC. See? Kindness is rewarded. You'll get a temple.

If you don't get in in the first round, it may be midnight before you can get in. So that's the best tip for you. cover charge is 15 eur for the first drink. If you can find and know the be lyrics, get there and be the be first 50 people and maybe maybe be you get a place next to the piano. Very fun environment.
