    Explorations Charter School

Explorations is where I went to High School. Looking back almost 10 years later, I treasure my…read moreexperiences there. Some background- Explorations is a charter school that focuses on non-traditional, experiential education. It's a public school that functions like a private school, but has the minuscule budget if a small public school. Kids from all over the state can go there, but a certain percentage of students have to be from the immediate area. When I was enrolled, we had classes four days a week, M-Th. Fridays were split into outdoor adventure and internships and students would alternate between the two every other Friday. I had two internships. One of them was at a doggie day care place. It's ironic where I worked as the owner resembled Michael Myers from the Halloween movies. Currently, he's in jail as police found a sex slave in his house. The other internship was at an automotive painting firm. Outdoor adventure is what we did the Fridays when we didn't have internships. As far as activities... I crawled into a bat cave in Salisbury-it was wet, muddy, full of bats and friggin awesome! I went hiking up CT's tallest peak I belayed and climbed rocks I shared secrets in a sweat lodge and ate freshly killed beef from a student's farm I shot my teachers with guns...paintball guns (don't get any funny ideas). I did that and soooo much more! Academically, compared to a normal high school, the homework load is lighter. You're on a first name basis with your teachers. They're approachable and easy to talk to. Besides a few social stereotypes like the stoners, punks, hippies and those soon to drop out, the school is pretty much devoid of typical stereotypical high school kids. Basically, you're free to be yourself without having to worry about how your perceived. There are no bullies either. When I went there, the school had taken over an old bank. That was our school. Classes were in the basement and the offices were in the vault. In the middle of winter, the landlord elected not to renew our lease. We had class in a park pavilion in the dead of winter in the northeast corner of CT. Somehow I got through it, but damn, it was cold. We were spared by NWCC who saw our plight and gave us an old building to use for the remainder the year. The next year we got our building, which is the current location of the school. My class had 16 people in it and when I was a student, the entire student body had 72 kids. I loved my non-stereotypical high school. I got to go rock climbing across from Mt. Washington, experience the cold and a douchbag landlord and the generosity of the local community college. I had amazing teachers- many of whim I still talk to outside of school. They truly made my experience great and I'd consider them friends. Also, I still talk to my classmates and try to stay in touch. I made friends who will hopefully last a lifetime. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. Explorations was a great experience and if you want a high school like no other, I encourage you to check it out. It's a one if a kind school :) Peace|

THIS IS THE BEST SCHOOL!…read more I am fortunate to have a unique perspective of The Children's Center as I am both, a parent of a one year old who attends the infant room, and the lead teacher of the toddler classroom. As a mother, I want my child to be given the best opportunities to learn and be nurtured day to day. The ache of dropping your precious baby off can be unbearable, but I have never had a day where I questioned his care. He is given so much enrichment through his teacher's careful lesson planning to evolve his skills through meeting critters like a porcupine! The smile I see on my son's face when I open the car door, revealing the school behind me- says it all. As a mother I am beyond blessed to know that my son's teachers are as invested in his education and safety as I am. As a teacher who has worked in the early childhood education field for over 12 years, I can assure you that this school is by far the best place for your children. The teachers are educated, kind, and passionate. The administration is unbiased, hard working, and always go out of their way to support anyone who needs it. We are a nonprofit school, not a corporation who cuts corners to make an easy dollar like most other schools do. Early childhood educators come to work each day because we love children. We enjoy giving them the tools they need to emotionally, socially, and educationally become incredible humans. Our love pours out of our doors and into the community every day. We volunteer our time to the senior center, GOAT Days, art center, and much more. We think that giving your child the best chance to succeed early is very important and we would very much appreciate the opportunity to help your little ones thrive!

My daughter went off to her first choice college and will graduate in weeks. She was ready for the rigors of college and had the tools and knew how to use them to get the most out of her college career. I would not hesitate to recommend Forman to any parent who thinks their child needs a little more guidance to not only succeed academically but to enjoy learning again. These are amazing, smart kids who learn differently. Forman gives them opportunities to explore subjects that they are passionate about and supports and encourages their passions. The state of the art Visual and Performing Arts Center is to open in Fall of 2017 and the Fabrication Lab opened this year. Choosing Maplebrook School was, without question, one of the best. -Maplebrook has helped our son become the very best version of himself--academically capable, socially connected, independent, and genuinely confident. We are profoundly grateful for the dedicated staff who believe in him and support him every single day. -From the moment he arrived, we knew this was more than a school. It is a community that understands how each student learns, grows, and thrives. -Academically, the small class sizes and individualized instruction have made all the difference. Teachers meet him exactly where he is, challenge him thoughtfully, and celebrate every success along the way. For the first time, he feels proud of his accomplishments. His confidence in the classroom has soared, and he now sees himself as capable. -Independence has flourished through boarding life. The structured yet nurturing residential environment has strengthened his executive functioning and communication skills. He manages his time, stays organized, advocates for himself, and takes responsibility for his daily routines. Watching him grow into a self-assured, capable young man has been incredibly rewarding. Just as important, the residential staff are deeply integrated into the school community--they are mentors and educators, not simply supervisors. -Socially, our once-lonely son has found his people. He has built meaningful friendships with peers who understand and support one another. His relationships have deepened his empathy, strengthened his communication skills, and brought more joy into his life than we ever imagined possible. -Athletics have been another transformative part of his experience. At his previous school, team sports were not accessible to him. At Maplebrook, he has embraced the opportunity to compete and belong. Participating in team sports has improved his physical health while fostering teamwork, discipline, resilience, and leadership. Being part of a team has given him a sense of pride and belonging that carries into every area of his life. -Choosing Maplebrook was an act of faith during a difficult time. Today, we see a young man who feels capable, connected, and confident about his future--and that is a gift beyond measure.

I was in Maplebrook roughly from ages 16 to 20 that would've been 2018-2022 (4 & a half years)…read more In my high school years while Mrs.Konkolics was head of school it started off rough, I was shy and bullied without any help or friends to "fit in" with. Not to mention I was never taught; sex ed, relationship navigation, health or anything an average high schooler should learn before college in their teen years. This set me back years later after I left Although it started out rough once I got comfortable I made a lot of friends and started to speak more with great memories. However there were many times that made me very depressed and even threated by the head of school to be sent to a mental hospital. These examples are; "R.I.S.E Program" made me feel less than other students as if other students could easily achieve things because they were favored and I wasn't lack of screen time lost my friends from back home & not only increased more stress by taking away my coping mechanisms but also home sickness because there was barely any time to call my family. My mentor and I never really got on a bonding level the staff I would bond with either got fired or quit with no easy transitioning period. When I graduated and went into the "Institute" where Mrs. Scully ran the first part of my "college experience" went well. However mid way into the year "college" started feeling like a high school and a drama soap opera. What was supposed to feel like college felt more like high school, I felt more at home with DCC than I did with MBS. Not to mention the chemicals they put in the water to "help purify it" made me feel sick to my stomach MBS is very good at social faking and drawing you in for your money but once you do your research or enrol you start to realize "maybe this school is too unhealthy for my young adult" I wish I had pulled a student aside and personally asked them "what do you REALLY think of this school" before I went there I been keeping an eye out on my old school because of my fond memories and have noticed they have hidden their past because they are ashamed of it, if you look on their social media and you scroll down more it'll prove my point. Most of my school year photos they have taken down (I have put a photo below to show this point) Not to mention the locals can tell you more information, they have been traveling for internationals because the locals are smart enough not to torcher their students. I have not been back in a while, however i used to keep in contact with some of the students currently there. I have heard "I get abused", "It's more like a military school" & "It is more strict than when you used to go here, your years sound made up" I hope my Alumni review can help when making future decisions,

Many students fresh out of high school think that going here will look "bad" in the long run when transferring, and finding a career, but I strongly disagree. Professors Valerie Royals and Dr. David Rodgers are great. I took classes in communications, micro/macro economics, financial/managerial accounting, all of my general ed classes, etc. And guess what? They ALL transferred to the University of Hartford, all 60 credits. Many of the full time staff and adjunct teachers have real-world experience and incorporate that into every day lessons. Some also teach part time or night classes at UCONN or UHART. I also remember having a professor in marketing who worked full-time for Pfizer, and a professor and mathematics who works full-time at the Hartford. I can't guarantee that those same people will still be there now, but when I can tell you is that this experience was not only great, but I was able to commute from my house extremely easily, and it saved me tons of money! I am now out of college debt-free because I started off I community college. To put it in perspective, I spent two years here, that's four total semesters as well as a few summer classes here and there to speed up the process. Each semester ran me about $1750 not including books. Books or anywhere from $3-$500 depending on the semester. This is pennies on the dollar compared to the university I transferred to! I also can't say with 100% confidence these prices because are the same because this was about 3+ years ago and I'm sure they have risen but they are most definitely cheaper then any state school or university! Some other perks about Northwestern are: free printing from the library, free tutoring assistance for classes, small class sizes, office hours with professors, opportunity for extra credit, activities part provided by the school and clubs to participate in!
