I knew that I needed to step up my insurance game and Michael Garrick, or 'Big Mike' as we like to call him, educated me on a policy with a Living Benefit Rider -- basically, should anything serious happen to you (like cancer) you are able to accelerate the payouts. Big Mike wrote us 2 policies last year and 1 this year. I cannot overstate the peace of mind that it's given me. Mike Garrick is the consummate pro. I am always able to get a hold of him -- this is incredibly reassuring. One of the major complaints that I've heard from those who buy life insurance policies is that there is no one around to answer their questions after they have purchased the policy. State Farm's original decision was that it was "collision" related which meant our deductible would be $1K. Gina went to bat for us and wrote a letter to explain why it should be "comprehensive" damage. She took the extra time to understand what had happened and was direct with the claims department. He seems very professional and seems very qualified, but I slowly began realizing that none of it was true. To sum it all up, in just two years this company has made multiple errors, has been very bad at communication, and has proven to not care about customer satisfaction. First, they mistakenly charged me twice having not realized I already sent them payment. This is not a huge deal, but come on your accountants. Then, when I asked if our Home Owner's Association (HOA) needed to file taxes, they said we did not have to. I later found out that we did have to file taxes and asked Troy to prepare the returns. I never received an explanation of why we did or did not have to file returns. Then the last straw: They made a pretty big error on my personal tax returns. When I told Troy about the IRS letter I received because of this error he offered no help in fixing it. He did not even look at my returns to verify if the error was his or the IRS's. He simply said I should look at my 1098's and figure it out myself. Although I should have pushed the issue with Troy and had him fix his error pro-bono, I opted to pay another accountant to fix it rather than to work with Troy again.
