Walk away full, but feeling flavorfully satisfied, guilt-free and healthy!…read more After a week of eating out for a conference in Norman( all tasty food mind you, mind you, but the kind of food that leaves feeling like "ahhh, I need to workout, purge, diet, fast, yadda, yoda, yedi!!!") I needed a break from the guilt! Not to mention, the older we get, successive ventures into the fried and fatty world of rich foods start to have a deleterious affect on my mood and mental sharpness as I feel more slugggish, bloated and "blechhy" by day 4 of my id locking up my superego in a basement closet. So, I opted out for going to a brewery with a co-worker and instead suggested this place which had some good reviews already and also the kind of menu that your heart and soul (as well as your guilt-muscle) can all smile about and relax. It is close the OU campus and is on a side street in the most literal sense that you pull in to the 4 space lot with your bumper inches away from the main road. Safe, but close. Street parking appears to be the alternative. We got lucky as it was late on a weekday (they close at 8) and found parking. It used to be a health food grocery store only but added a kitchen not too long ago after having success with another eat-in store on the OU campus. It is narrow, self-(and limited seating with pub-style ordering from counter where you fine their menu. The menu is laminated 10x14 I think, 2 sides including drinks so their menu is ample enough that you could find anything hot or cold, liquid or solid. The have shakes and juices made-to-order as well as a variety of deli and finger food options. Since it would be my last night in Oklahoma I tried several things to share and ended up eating them all. I had a beet, carrot and spinach juice (your choice of 8 or 16 oz)-- ahhhhhhh. There is nothing added so if you are not into juices, you will taste what ingredients you add and I love beets! While there are many vegetarian and vegan options they do include some meat. I had the bowl of veggie chili which was a hearty rendition with several types of beans, carrots and corn. It was not bland but had spices that gave it an addictive flavor. They also had a creamy soup that I declined.I also had the hummus which appeared to be white bean and was chunky as well as creamy but altogether with a mild flavor that did not conflict with the chili. I opted for carrots vs. corn chips but they do offer tortilla chips for their "build-your-own nachos" part of the menu. From the sandwich section I picked a tuna salad (that had dolphin-safe tuna and not a substitute) but I did get a taste of the not-really-chicken chicken salad and that was good too. In addition to a variety of groceries and desserts to purchase and take home they sell fresh bread. I had a slice of the 3-seed bread and it made me want to stuff myself by ordering another sandwich just so I could put anything between two pieces of their fresh bread. They had 4 kinds of bread including a honey wheat and 2 vegan offerings but I selected their 4th choice which was the 3-seed (chia, sunflower and pumpkin maybe??) My only regret was knowing that I would not be able to return until I made the trip from the east coast to Norman, Oklahoma...but it does give me a big reason to return :)

Seems like my partner has a talent to find random places with great food. Today after months of…read morebeing away from OKC we drove to what I thought was a meat market (given the Market/Meat sign at the entrance) only to find a piñata clutter market with a food section to satisfy all taco lovers needs. Since I was a bit confused by the million options I asked the friendly attendant if one of the huge containers was chorizo but it wasn't it, it actually was chopped meat al pastor, the other appealing meat in the next counter ended up being barbacoa... I paused to consider my choices, my references for this style of food come from the places in Mexico where barbacoa is cooked underground and the meat looks slightly different, the meat here is different but probably tastes great, it looks greats... so I didn't dive into the unfamiliar and chose the meat next to meat al pastor: chorizo and scrambled eggs. Two minutes later I ended with a massive platter in my hands filled with rice, beans (vegetarians please note the beans are full of meat in all modalities: sausage, chorizo, lard, etc.) and what looked like a kilo of meat on the side with a generous serving of fried onions and jalapeno peppers. As soon as I notice the huge amount of food I asked the counter lady to reduce the meat serving to about half of what was in the plate. The meal was delicious, affordable ($4.99 since I split the original size in half -seems like they don't do half orders but they accepted to do it at my request, you can always ask right?), the setting was interesting even though I was highly distracted by the neatly organized array of candy, colorful piñatas, rancheras and the banda loud tunes on the background; to be honest the only thing missing here were 3 sets of televisions, one with a soap opera another with a football game and a third with a talk show with a beautiful woman and a clown...then I would have felt complete and back in some Fonda deep south from the border. The place is quite generous and very convenient if you are on a budget and seeking a tasty meal (did I mention my meal came with a generous side of steaming hot tortillas -corn or wheat depending on your choice-) The one container meal was 8.99 -and I saw two guys splitting one platter (while happily singing and showing homesick nostalgia to the tunes of Jose Alfredo Jimenez Paloma Querida) As I left I saw the women on the back slicing some delicious mango that is retailed in a cup for 2.99 according to the signs on the wall. If they only stop using plastic the place would get a higher score (being eco-conscious counts!) Will stop back for sure and this time I will get the perfect small portion I need to satisfy my hunger: just 1 gordita al pastor.

There isn't a lot of room, just four stools set at their counter. Their birria is on point and wonderful over their smothered curly fries ($8). We tried a handful of things -- quesabirria taco ($2.50 ea), consomé, horchata -- while all were not the most flavorful in town, they were pretty good. I would suggest they switch tortillas, as this cheap one gets tough to chew. Plus their house orange salsa has decent flavor, a bit spicy, but is very watery and runs everywhere. This is a birrieria, so their menu isn't too diverse, but getting larger all the time. Beyond birria, they do offer carne asada and chicken. Accepting cards with a $3 minimum, you can even order food at the drive-thru window on the opposite side (though traffic may back up). After your meal inside, take ticket with you and pay at the convenience store register. Though it's a little cluttered inside, they keep the counter nice and clean. But it's not an actual bar top so it is a little uncomfortable to eat at. Takeout is your best option here. There are a lot of competitors nearby, but Rancho has a few unique items that set them apart. We will definitely be back.
