Relax and listen to the fine selection of music or you can watch and listen to the water installation just outside. I was adamant that given the compact-wooden-pod nature of the place, I should only go in extreme weather conditions in order to make the trip all the more exciting. In beloved but rainy Manchester, blue-skies and sunshine qualifies as extreme conditions. As such, during a sunny June Sunday, I seized the opportunity to sip on a 'Grindsmith' flat white, with sunshine beaming through the open façade (almost entirely made of glass) - I was not disappointed. An excellent decision on my part to go when sunny and excellent brewing skills from Grindsmith as far as kick-ass flat white's are concerned. Grindsmith offers little when it comes to food, there was a very small selection of baked goods but they looked rustic and appealing. I wasn't expecting an extensive food menu, nor was I disappointed by its lack. What is pretty darn cool however, is that Grindsmith stock 'Ginger's Comfort Emporium' ice-cream - absolutely the best ice-cream I have ever tasted! (See my review of the cafe in Affleks palace) Marry this with a Grindsmith espresso and you've got an Affogato sent directly from heaven. £3 well spent I'd say - a delightful weekend treat. Take a walk to Greengate Square. Look, I know the Premiere Inn there is really ugly and a bit of an off-putter, but once inside Grindsmith's coffee haven, you'll forget such an architectural disaster ever happened. You can read more of what I have to say about Grindsmith (and other places) on my new blog: http://thehungrygiraffe.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/grindsmith-espresso-and-brewbar.html

Well they do say every day's a school day…read more We learned something we didn't know here; we both simultaneously thought that the milk in our coffees had turned (flat white & cappuccino £3 each) but the manager advises it's the complex quality of the exceptional coffee used, so next time it'll be espressos as milk doesn't add sweetness here and I avoid sugar. The manager offered to make fresh coffees and kindly explained about the quality of their coffee, supplied by Dark Woods Coffee and suggested this coffee ain't Costa - I do agree. My new coffee tasted identical to the original but my wife thought hers less 'sour'. Dark Woods provide the coffee and hand roast their beans on a 1950's Probat drum roaster. They are top notch on the environmental and social impact and certified B Corp - 5 green stars here. When tasting think terroir, varietals and process. I had the chestnut & wild mushrooms with garlic & herbs on organic sourdough supplied by an artisan maker. This dish was well balanced, delicious and a decent portion. My wife had the salmon bagel with cream cheese and scallions. She declared it delicious too (salmon delicately smoked by the Manchester Smoke House and bagel baked perfectly by the Bread Factory, Manchester). The sparkling water came well chilled and in a recyclable bottle. We were seated out back at a wobbly table that only required me putting my shoe on the base, the service was attentive, we were suitably distanced from other diners and they genuinely cared that we thought the milk in coffees was off. The place was spic & span clean and with their focus and transparency on quality organic food, preserving the environment (remember folks the earth is our only home) and relying on artisans for produce it's 5 green stars for them too. Really worth supporting.

The downside to it in my opinion is a recent refurb in Sept/Oct (2016) left it feeling cold and like a supermarket cafe. Mostly wooden chairs and bland environment. Only 6... yes 6 easy chairs made of pleather (plastic looking leather!!!!). The new display looks inviting and staff still friendly... but for the customer... yes for you and me it's now not the front room style it once was, this is corporately of course as this store is one of many in the refurb schedule and now Starbucks think more of themselves than the customer... That said, don't forget of you don't ever like your drink for whatever reason, just go back and ask for it to be remade... it's their promise!
