    Newcomb Hollow Beach - 6/25/2024

    Newcomb Hollow Beach

Going back to my infant days and even my family's youth days is Newcomb Hollow Ocean Beach. This is…read moreone of our favorite places to visit, and boy, it's amazing here. First off, you do need a beach sticker provided by the town of Wellfleet. However, in the nighttime, it does not matter. There is a huge parking lot for enough spaces, and most likely you will find a spot during the daytime. A bathroom is provided in the lot in the center. There's even an ice cream truck featuring hot dogs and water that's parked toward the ocean. For the fun, there is a big hill to climb down either way (left or right) that leads down to the beach and sands. Normally, you'll find a lot of people with their blankets and sometimes looking for a spot can be very time-consuming. There are a couple of lifeguards here at Newcomb, but only patrol a small area, so please be careful in the water. Bonfires are allowed but require a permit in the same place where a beach sticker is picked up. Getting here to Newcomb is very easy as it is located at the end of Ocean View Drive. If we enjoy it here, someone else will too!

When low tide hits it becomes very shallow, almost creating a cove for a little ones to sit in. There are some rocks, and the water is a little chilly, but it's really refreshing and fun. We go there almost every day.

It's the same harbor where the Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact BEFORE landing in Plymouth. Yes, they landed in Provincetown first! Once on long point head toward the tip and you can't miss the lighthouse. Stunning. Be sure to look along the inlets and you can still find some remnants of the 19th century colony (bricks, shards of porcelain etc). Don't forget to find a spot on the beach...you could be the only one on it! Plan around the tide or you'll be dragging your kayak. You can also walk there via the jetty or have the local service (Flyers) drop you off for a fee. I'd avoid the Flyers service. If taking a kayak...DO NOT go directly across the deep part of the harbor! Especially in August or if there are seals in the water. Yes, we have a great white shark population that seems to get bigger every year. Stay along the sand bar (hint, you should almost always see the bay floor). This place is pure heaven.

What a great place. The problem is how the hell to get to the end of the world. No roads here, you either go by small boat or walk. It's a pretty good hike through heavy sand but there is a short cut. Go over the breakwater that starts at the Pilgrim Plaque. Just don't try it in rough weather or you will probably die. Assuming you actually get out there you will find one of the absolutely coolest places anywhere. Nothing but wild wind and sea. The light is never open but you can walk right up to it. No one cares because no one is around. Probably for miles. The light was built in 1875 but an earlier one was built in 1826. It's only 38 feet tall and had a fifth order Fresnel lens. I'm not sure whatt happen to the lens. The real cool part is that this area once had lots of houses, buildings and windmills for power. Several hundred people actually lived way out here.. Even two old forts, sarcastically called Fort Useless and Fort Harmless. Apparently they were not too successful. The remains of the forts can still be seen but just lumps in the sand. Everything else is long gone. The wind is always howling out here and you can almost hear the old voices. On one of the mounds there is a large cross with flowers frequently place around it. I'm not sure what it signifies but gives a surrealistic feel to a wild and spooky place.

Coast Guard Beach seemed great also except for the fact that we would have to park and then take a shuttle to the shore. We decided on this beach, which seems to have the same feel as Coast Guard. We got there at about 945am on a Tuesday morning in August. There were only a handful of parking spots left at The Beachcomber. Parking was $30 but we got a voucher to use toward food or souvenirs from The Beachcomber (the food and mixed drinks there were very good). The beach is accessible by a pathway on a sand dune that is tall and steep. Going down was easy. Going back up required a few rest stops for me. I'm pregnant and I was carrying our 1.5 year old. It probably would've been easier for me had I not been pregnant but this is definitely not a trek for anyone with physical limitations. My 4 year old went up and down twice but her legs were really burning the 2nd time going up. This is one of the best beaches I've ever been to. Sapphire water and soft sand. Quiet crowd and limited cell service, which added to the relaxation. The shore is a little rocky but doable without water shoes. Once you walk into the water a few feet from the shore the rocks give way to soft sand. The water was cold. I almost felt like I was taking an ice bath. But it felt great once I got acclimated and really helped me cool down in the 85 degree weather. It was a really special experience and so picturesque. One important note: there is a danger of sharks because of the booming seal population. We saw seals in the early afternoon swimming playfully about 20 feet from shore. Some locals will not get in the water if they spot seals-- that means sharks could be nearby. There were lifeguards on duty and also a shark patrol boat along the coast but it's still a little scary! The current got very strong in the early afternoon. I'm used to the crashing waves at the Atlantic beaches in NY and this undertow concerned even me.
