Update: I recently returned to Ray's on the River for the first time in ages. This place is an…read moreAtlanta institution. Still good. Simply put, this place suffices for a nice night out if you're looking for steak, seafood, and elevated American/Southern food. They also serve weekday lunch and weekend brunch. Note: Even though the Ray's restaurants are unique to metro Atlanta, this place does have a more corporate/chain feel to it (not saying that's a bad thing). Book your reservation using OpenTable and get dining points. Parking is complimentary valet. I tipped using Venmo. We visited on a Sunday night and the dining room was fairly busy. Here's what I tried: Martinis: * The Meredith ($18) - Grey Goose vodka, extra dirty, Castelvetrano olives * What's the Catch ($18) - Absolut vanilla vodka, Chinola passion fruit liqueur, lychee, lemon Starters: * Pimento Fritters ($17) - original Ray's 1984 recipe, jalapeño jelly * Calamari "Fritto Misto" ($18) - flash-fried, baby vegetables, Ray's aioli Soups & Salads: * Ray's Greens ($14) - Bibb lettuce, fennel, radish, herbs, mustard vinaigrette Seafood: * Horseradish Crusted Black Grouper ($52) - Atomic Horseradish cracker crust, seasonal vegetables, Dijonnaise Sides: * Whipped Potatoes ($14) * Brussels Sprouts ($14) - bacon and shallot jam Desserts: * Warm Butter Cake ($12) - lemon butter cake, blueberry compote, vanilla ice cream * Chocolate Brownie Sundae ($12) - caramelized bananas, strawberries, pecans, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce Everything was delicious. I enjoyed the martinis and was pleasantly surprised by Ray's Greens (I love salad) and the grouper. The Pimento Fritters are heavy, but can be considered a must, especially if you're entertaining guests from out of town. The desserts were fantastic. Good service. The staff was nice.

Ray's On the River would have been the highlight of a recent trip to Atlanta; however, the…read moreexperience fell short of expectations. First of all, the parking situation was abysmal if you wanted to self-park. The lot fills up quickly and it isn't clear which spots are reserved for valet or open to the public. After driving around for 15 minutes, I decided to order take out instead. It would have been nice to know if there had been an overflow parking lot. The food itself was decent, but nothing spectacular. I had the cowboy steak, the calamari, and the lobster Mac and cheese. The steak was prepared well with the perfect doneness, but was missing some more salt. The calamari was mediocre with the batter being more mushy than crispy, even when eaten fresh. The lobster Mac and cheese was unfortunately not great either. The lobster was cooked well, but the portion size was small compared to the cost. The shells were not cooked al dente, but more on the overcooked side. Pros: Staff and servers were friendly. Cons: Limited parking space. Very expensive for the meager portion size. Flavor isn't quite up to par with what I've had at other steakhouses.

Had a lovely time. We got a cocktail before we came at Third Door...took a shortcut through Hansell St, walked through the tiny but charming Church Street Park, and ultimately landed at our (mostly) nondescript location of Spring. Note that this is the "original"...not the more casual (but supposedly great) 2nd branch location. Service is welcoming immediately upon arrival. It is a small venue with a limited number of tables. Essentially the size of a living room. It is also a minuscule menu...but curated with care and delivered with diligence. Please note that I would recommend trying a wine glass or two from the available selection. They put thought into the list of options, so I think you can't go wrong, and you can certainly ask about what flavor profiles you'd like as the team is quite knowledgeable. We enjoyed the Domaine Terrebrune and the Pinot Noir, but I'm sure all the wines are wonderful. Food was awesome as well. Really loved their rendition of an Andalusian soup (ajo blanco...think of it as equivalent to a white gazpacho) and the foamy garlic cream laden pasta. Would also recommend the grilled grouper and asparagus salad with salmon on the side. We also enjoyed all three desserts, though we overestimated our appetite by the end of the dinner!

I found some lovely friends to go with, and we ordered almost everything on the menu and shared it all. This is the right way to eat here. We ordered second rounds of the tuna and the foie Gras parfait. I usually hate foie Gras, but here it was incredible. I can't wait for them to officially reopen in the new space. It will be on my regular rotation then!
