Our daughter who is 4 loved the one day trial so we signed both her and my son 6 up for classes but after getting the wind knocked out of her by a boy in class she wouldn't go back, literally refused. It was a huge hassle to get it cancelled, then my son who did love going broke a bone (somewhere else not here) we still were bound to the agreement and had to pay on the billing cycle per the contract so we wasted several hundreds of dollars for something they didn't use. I made lifelong friends and was shown real generosity. This isn't the result of one bad experience. But after watching Rise Up improve dramatically and then, in my opinion, repeat many of the same cultural problems that hurt it before, I can no longer recommend it. Historically, I viewed Rise Up as having an unhealthy loyalty culture: people could be treated one way while they were "with us," then spoken about very differently after leaving or disagreeing with ownership. When Brandon took ownership in 2026, I thought that was finally changing. Old members returned, the mats filled up and multiple black belts were teaching. As a 6'1", 285-lb practitioner, I improved more in those months than I had in years. Brandon called me "one of my guys" and told me he wanted me to eventually be one of his first black belts. Then, following our belt seminar, I personally observed what I considered a dramatic change. I witnessed Brandon storm off the mats and slam doors and heard him begin speaking negatively about people who had left. Shortly afterward, Brandon kicked out all three black belts who had been helping him teach. One was a close friend. I separately spoke with both him and Brandon about their disagreement. Brandon added that my friend had been "talking shit" about him. Having just spoken directly with my friend, I did not believe that characterization was truthful. It felt familiar: someone was no longer aligned with Rise Up, and suddenly I was hearing negative things about them. I had experienced something similar myself. While encouraging me to test for purple belt, Brandon told me another instructor might not agree I deserved the promotion. That instructor was my friend, so I asked him directly. He told me he had never opposed my promotion; he simply wanted to see me train more in the Gi because I overwhelmingly preferred No-Gi. Another issue significantly affected my opinion of Brandon's judgment. After a female student joined, I personally heard Brandon repeatedly comment about how attractive he found her. I reminded him that he was in a committed relationship and, importantly, that he was her instructor. I told him BJJ already has a serious problem with instructors crossing sexual/romantic boundaries with students and that those boundaries mattered. The comments continued. Later, inside Rise Up and in front of another witness, Brandon told us this student had kissed him, grabbed his genitals and sexually propositioned him. To be extremely precise: I did NOT witness that alleged encounter and am NOT accusing Brandon of sexually harassing or assaulting a student. I personally witnessed Brandon recounting it afterward. What concerned me was how he discussed it. In my opinion, he was bragging rather than treating what he described as a serious instructor/student boundary issue. Combined with his previous comments, it significantly changed my opinion of his judgment and character. Eventually, losing all three black belts forced me to evaluate my own development. I told Brandon I needed experienced partners who could safely push me and decided to leave. I explicitly told him it wasn't personal. We'd been teammates and friends for years. Then came what ultimately prompted this review. I paid Rise Up $180 for gear on May 29, 2026. I never received it. When I canceled, I requested a refund. After ten days without receiving it, I followed up. Brandon characterized my request as a "threat." I clarified it wasn't a threat. Brandon responded in writing: "We are no longer friends... Your refund will be processed within the next seven days." I retained the payment records and communications. I gave him those seven days, plus the entire weekend. As of August 10, I have received neither the $180 nor the merchandise. I'm done pursuing it. I'm treating the $180 as a loss and washing my hands of the situation. Readers can decide for themselves what they think of a business accepting payment, not delivering the merchandise, promising a refund in writing, and then failing to meet its own deadline. Rise Up wasn't all bad--far from it. For several months under Brandon, I genuinely thought it was becoming the best version of itself. People change gyms. Coaches disagree. Friendships end. None alone would make me write this review. Watching the culture regress, all three black belts be kicked out, hearing people disparaged after disagreements, witnessing conduct that caused me to question the owner's judgment and instructor/student boundaries, and ultimately being left without either my merchandise or promised refund was enough. Food $$$ & no outside food or drink allowed. Shakes taste a 5 on a scale of 1-10. After taste that keeps you from finishing the whole shake. Each shake $11- $15 Staff is nice, but limited in helping you. Price is set. Memberships very complicated. There really is no "you can go to any gym if you work aboard." each gym has specific benefits. If it doesn't match up boom not allowed. For example: NY has 14 gyms that do not allow you to go. Period! Membership offers a "all gyms" with hike up in $$$. So you pay extra for nothing. Look on line and it shows you how few gyms are interchangeable. Hot tubs need updating. Water is low so it hits you below chest with only 3 jets in the entire tub aimed at your back. Just like a motel would have.
