This is a waste turned energy plant and it opened in 2017. It basically turns waste into energy that can supply 150,000 homes. The idea behind this is to develop clean energy and to become carbon neutral for Denmark AND also at the same time be an urban recreational facility which supports hiking, running and skiing!
And since I am quite the curious individual, I had to give this a try. I enjoy skiing in the winter, so figured, why not?
I did some research on their website and the cost to ski plus everything you need was reasonably priced! It's definitely much cheaper than the US to ski here! Also, the weather looked sunny to ski, so I booked a slot.
I got lost getting here and showed up a bit after my 2-4pm slot and the gear rental center was mobbed with people! There was a long line to get skis and everything else.
They did, however, have my ski boots and skis ready for me since I booked online yesterday, I appreciated that.
But when I needed poles and also a lock for a cubby hole locker, I had to get back in line. I was sent thru the line a few times to get ski boots, poles and then lock for locker, which cost 20DKK to borrow.
I was ready to ski about 35 min after I arrived and started off with a kiddie slope first to test out equipment and gear. The kiddie slope was fine so I moved on to the next level.
So for level 1, they do have a conveyer belt to ride up, but instead of going thru the turnstile entrance, I somehow went thru the side and got on the conveyer belt. Once up on the small hill for level 1, coming down was kind of a mess as you're basically skiing on plastic turf plus ice (it rained heavily and snowed), I didn't quite enjoy skiing on ice. But I was able tomake it up and down level 1 a few times.
I then got a little braver and tried out level 2, which was also a conveyor belt going up. It stopped working when I wanted to go up, so I just decided to lug my skis and walk up, about half way up, the conveyor belt started working again (attendant at the bottom fixed it) and I barely caught my balance, but made it to the top of level 2.
I could barely finish level 2 the first time and did manage to fall as the ice was just too slippery to control. The second time I tried to get back up to level 2 there was so much ice on the conveyor belt that I could not seem to grip it with my skis, but finally there was a part of the belt that was not iced over, so I managed to go up. Once up at the top, I had a similar experience coming down as I'm only about an intermediate level of skiing, so this ice skiing was difficult for me especially since this is my first skiing of the season.
I think had I had more than 2 hours, I could probably master level 2 ice skiing but I didn't have more time since I need to be somewhere at 5pm.
The attendants were nice and one guy even told me since I arrived a little later, not to worry, I can ski for 2 hours as the clock doesn't start ticking until I scan my pass. However, no pass was ever issued to me, as the place was mobbed with people, and the attendants seemed pretty flustered and overworked.
I realized I had no ski pass once I made it over to the ski area and I tried asking one of the attendants there as they did have a customer service desk, but she said she couldn't make me a card there. At this point, I was not going back to the rental gear area, so I just bypassed the turnstile from the side and the attendant didn't seem to care. Kids were going thru the side with their tubes, there is a luge area for kids, which looked fun.
I was pretty tired of slipping and sliding for 90 min, so when 4pm rolled around, I called it quits. Now, back to the rental gear center and again completely mobbed with people at 4pm trying to get their equipment. I feel like they need a better system honestly.
The system was also fairly disorganized as two other skiers also made this comment to me when I realized I had no ski pass trying to go thru the turnstile.
I also had trouble figuring out where the rental center was and managed to hike up to the rooftop bar only to find the rental center was not there, but got my dose of cardio today lol.
I didnt try the Olympic half pipe slope as I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it without falling or seriously injuring myself since the condition of the slope was very icy and felt too dangerous for me.
I guess I now know what ice skiing on the East Coast might be like haha! I learned to ski as an adult in Colorado and have only skied the finest snow on the West Coast and in the Southwest.
There is not only a rooftop bar but also a bar area right next to the rental gear center too. The bar on the ground floor was also mobbed with people, I guess a la urban apres ski haha!
This wasn't a bad experience and I'm glad I tried it out! Definitely unique to say I have skied at a waste turned energy plant in CPH! But, don't expect it to be champagne powder snow thru some very scenic, beautiful nature though... read more
