If you want to find great brands and prices like this in NYC, you have to be prepared to sort through an unorganized store and it's like finding a needle in a haystack-- but not here. Everything is so organized, each clothing rack is in order according to sizing, even the shoes are organized, there's no clutter and the store is easy to walk through and find what you need. I could say "it's an Italian thing" for why it's so organized and neat since Italians are all about presentation and visuals, but I still have to give this store credit for keeping things organized considering the high amount of tourist traffic that comes through this area. The layout is grand and you can see how to get to each specialty department from mostly anywhere in the store without really needing to ask where departments are. The sales people are chill, they don't hassle you, but are available to help when you need them. If you're in Firenze and prefer to shop quality and designer apparel without paying full price, this is the place to come! After you finish doing your touristy things near the Duomo, come and visit just around the corner!

I knew exactly what I wanted: black, leather, with a pointy toe and a reasonable but non-negligible heel. Shoes to take into my 40s. I had a feeling I might find a pair in Italy, and actually walked into the Prada store in Florence to check out a pair I'd scouted online. They were too expensive and too pointy, but I knew they were in the right ballpark. I went to Salvatore Ferragamo a few hours later, in large part because we were staying at the Hotel Lungarno, owned by the Ferragamo family, and had 10% off any purchases at the store. My husband was looking for a belt, too, and we figured it was worth popping in for a browse. Salvatore Ferragamo is a Florence label, it turns out, and this store is its global flagship. It's in a literal Gothic palace, the Palazzo Spini Feroni, purchased by Salvatore Ferragamo himself in the 1930s. The building also houses the company headquarters and the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum. The store was spacious and attractive, with room after room of Ferragamo goods. It was pretty quiet when we walked in, close to 7:00 on a cold Tuesday night, and we were able to browse for a while without anyone taking notice of us. We looked at some men's shoes and belts, but they were a little obviously branded for my normcore husband. Then I walked into the women's shoe room and saw my perfect pump displayed on one of the shelves: black, leather, with a pointy toe and a reasonable but non-negligible heel. The leather was soft and beautiful, the Ferragamo branding limited to a small gold detail at the back of each ankle. There was a patent leather version, too, which I also quite liked. I tried on the display shoes for size and a security guy asked if I needed someone to help me. He went and retrieved a young sales associate named Veronica, who brought me available sizes for both the leather and patent leather pumps, as well as the leather in another color. Unfortunately, she told me, they didn't have the black leather pair in stock in my preferred size. I asked if I could order it through the store and maybe pick it up in Rome, where I'd be staying later in the week, and she told me that was impossible. I looked it up myself and saw the shoes were all but sold out in my size in Italy. Strangely, there appeared to be one pair in the Florence store, but when Veronica went to get it, it turned out to be the same model shoe in brown suede. I was ready to give up, and had started selling myself on the patent leather--it was a great shoe, and a good price with the detax and the Hotel Lungarno discount--when Veronica came back, very excited, carrying my shoes. It occurred to her that the brown shoes might have been switched with the black ones, and she went back to check quietly, without getting my hopes up. I was thrilled, and she seemed genuinely happy for both of us. It took a while to make the purchase, which required making an account with Ferragamo and filling stuff out for both the tax refund and the extra 10% discount. (I did, of course, immediately start getting emails, but it was easy enough to hit unsubscribe.) In the end, though, I had my new favorite heels, for about 30% less than I would have paid at home. A wonderful souvenir, too, from the Florence home of a global house.

Paulo and his family store was an amazing experience. I walked by this store after it had closed…read moreour first day in Florence. Several of the designs in their window caught my eye so I returned first thing the next day. Their shop has 3 unique leather techniques I have not seen at any other store. I love the feel of soft smooth leather, but usually find leather heavy, especially if it has a basket weave pattern since that doubles the weight. BG has 2 patterns that look like a weave- one a geometric square pattern, the other a raised "pinch" pattern, but are actually cleverly sewn from a single piece of super soft, thin leather. Their 3rd weave pattern creates these gorgeous optical illusions of 3d circles/waves. I was blown away by the craftsmanship, thr lightness of the leather, and the gorgeous colors- classy greige and powder blue, rich burgundy, evergreen, and navy, and luxurious gold and bronze. BUT I didn't want to get carried away and blow my budget before checking out the rest of the city. So I left and started looking. Basketweaves were all over Florence, of varying colors and qualities. But nothing like the 3 I saw at BG. I went back this time w my motherinlaw who has much more experience in high end luxury names and products, and she immediately declared the quality of the leather and uniqueness of their patterns a definite buy. Paulo was so helpful, quoting her an amazing price (similar to many prices we had heard from sellers of products at the mercato stalls without the same quality, workmanship,or guarantees. In fact, she decided to custom order her bag for the colors of her choice in the design she wanted. While she was deliberating, I wandered into the back and found- their amazing leather coats! A super classy reversible 3/4 length deer suede/leather jacket w an intricate mandarin collar and cuffs using an alternating basketweave. Gorgeous! flattering! Buttery soft and light as a feather! But then... Paulo showed me their piece de resistance, this gorgeous buttery white/greige 3/4 sleeve cropped jacket w this mod funnel collar- with their special geometric square pattern detailing the cuffs and collar. So gorg!!!! Yet again, I wanted to make sure I wasn't just being a rube from america... And I spend the next day checking out several recommended shops around Santa Croce, high-end stores near the Ponte Vecchio and... I even found a store that had attempted to knock off their pinch-weave and their optical illusion weave- but couldnt nail either look. The leather was too thick and bulky, the stitching on the pinch pattern was easily visible, they couldn't carry off the 2-tone weave so they did single color, etc. And believe it or not, they were asking the SAME price as BG! I also found another store that knocked off their black deerskin coat, but again they just didnt get the leather or the fit right- little details kike the pockets being way too shallow, and tightness at the elbows w movement.... And yes, asking the same price! So today, I ran back to BG ready to use up all my vacation allowance on clearly the best shop in town.... Sadly Paulo has left to attend his daughter's exams, which I thought was incredibly sweet, but his nephew was there to help me place my order. I had hoped to let Paulo know how much I loved the beauty of the design and quality of their family store, and how much I had appreciated his enthusiasm for showing all the products to my motherinlaw and myself even when we weren't ready to commit earlier in our trip. He was so kind and classy, and their products are really so gorgeous and incredibly fairly priced, that I'd easily be convinced to buy maybe one more thing if I wasn't literally leaving town before they open tomorrow! I am incredibly happy w what I ordered and we had been so enthusiastic, we convinced several of the people in our tour to come take a look and make purchases too!
