The fact that the lodge has been open, under the same family management for 140 years, and I am the first review says something in itself.
We found Coon's at the recommendation of a family acquaintance and didn't know what we were in for; boy I am glad we did!
We were greeted warmly at reception without a trace of phoney familiarity and shown to our cabin. The cabin was built in 1923 and was beautiful, comfortable with luxurious sheets and towels and comfortable mattresses. The cabin was situated right off the water front with a huge screened porch.
We were the only new comers at the lodge with the rest of the guests coming for generations (no kidding up to 4!) My wife and I are somewhat reserved in our activities. We never felt or were treated like outsiders for even a moment. The other guests were warm, nice, friendly and terrific to be around. If you can judge a man by the company he keeps, and judge a resort by the quality of it's guest then this alone deserves 5 stars.
This is the Coon's family 4th generation running the lodge. I believe hospitality is a gene, inherited not taught; the Coon's have it in spades. It never felt forced or inauthentic. The staff was the same way. My wife is a bit of a picky eater and whatever her request the answer was always "absolutely". The food is incredible with choices from decadent to healthy; every bite delicious.
Notes: the lodge is BYOB so come prepared. The guest's dress for dinner, we packed a little more casually and no one bated an eye, next year we will come prepared. Please don't mistake "dressing for dinner" as a code word for stuffy it isn't, it just harkens back to another time where there was intention around family meals. My kids are already making lists for our next return. read more
