If you are in the area- the cemetery is a must. This is the only one in all the world. The first dog buried here was Troop back in 1937. His marker is still here- his info is chiseled in an old chimney. Many other markers are not legible anymore. This is still an active cemetery. Only coins may be buried here- with permission. Several burials had the collar and tags from their beloved dogs. There is a guest book to sign. Looks like most people who come are local. We didn't see any other California people.

What a cool place. Stopped by here before fishing Wilson Lake and being the dog lover I am, I got a little knot in my throat after looking at the head stones and dog collars. Only actual coon dogs are allowed to be buried here. When the founder of the cemetery was asked why by a reporter from California, he stated, "You must not know much about coon hunters and their dogs, if you think we would contaminate this burial place with poodles and lap dogs," LOVE it. Get directions from the website. It's about a 20 minute ride from hwy 72 to get there and there are plenty of signs to guide you along the way so you won't get lost. Coon Dog Cemetery Rd is very windy/twisty and absolutely lovely during the fall. Plus, it's the only one of its kind in the world!

Headstone marking the grave of Trooper, the first buried here. Nice, quiet place. As dog lovers, we recommend it.

The cemetery is a bit over five miles off the highway but the road is paved and the ride is enjoyable. The grounds of the Coon Dog Cemetery are nice and the grass kept neat. There are picnic tables, a small pavilion, guest register and outdoor toilets for visitors to use.

Since we don't own any pets, I didn't know what to expect at a dog cemetery, but my first impression was that this is very sweet. I am so glad we drove out here to visit....and it is a hike...about 12 miles down Hwy 247 and another 5 miles on Coon Dog Cemetery Road. But it was well worth the trip - highly recommend. Seeing the memorial to Troop is worth the trip but there are about 200+ other great coon hounds buried in this little piece of heaven on earth! We wanted to stay longer but it started to rain, so said our goodbyes and headed out.
