The tomatoes that I purchased this week are definitely "home grown" in a greenhouse. Same with the cucumbers. Very disappointing. $3.50 a lb for tomatoes and $2.00 per cucumber. Yes, prices have gone up. I will gladly pay premium for garden raised produce. Maybe they will toss the greenhouse veggies and get back to truly selling from their farm. Meanwhile, too many true veggie stands around the area. So I won't be back.

The variety of restaurants or ethnic food available for purchase at grocery stores is laughably low. So i heard about George's International Market and checked out their website. I was really excited to try it because it gave the impression of being "International" and i love a wide variety of foods. I decided due to this to make the long drive into Fort Wayne to check this place out. My first impression of this place was confusion. Just inside the store you find a statue of a lion holding a shield, a statue of Elvis, and a third statute of Marilyn Monroe in her famous skirt scene. I am unsure what this has to do with a supermarket. I then walked into the actual market and was surprised at how much smaller it looks than in the website. I also discovered as I began exploring that its "international" designation is a bit overstated. It does have food from one or two European countries but its mostly hispanic and really mostly Mexican. Was i a bit disappointed? Yes. That said, i did find a lot of food that my culture also loves in here that overlaps. Firstly, i found actual green plantains! Usually in the supermarkets near my home they sell plantains but they are rarely green. To be able to fry some up and have tostones! Yes!!!!! I also found other products my family and I would love including plantain chips, malta, yuca, tamales, Jamaican patties, and croquettas. The croquettas were of the frozen variety and sadly only in chicken, i prefer ham. I was also very happy when I found Pineapple Nectar for my mom. She loves the stuff and hasn't had any since we moved! So i did end up buying quite a bit when I came here and i will likely come back again. The fillings are no longer ample but just enough so you can see/taste it, the dough was not cooked all the way though (at least the 8 filled ones anyways) and from a dozen, it went up just over $10. From a dozen that was perfectly made and filled and including tax was $13.20 and now with tax is $23.98 (price hike June 1st) to not so good & hardly filled. I also noticed that the employees were also different and not so friendly anymore. Maybe it was too early in the morning. Time to fid another doughnut shop, maybe the gas station next to it.
