According to the paper's website it is the only African American publication in Florida that prints twice weekly and owns all its own printing equipment. The paper originally operated in Jacksonville, Florida In 1919 before closing during the Great Depression. It was reopened as a weekly by the son of the owner of that paper, C. Blythe Andrews, in Tampa in December, 1945 at 1511 Central Avenue. The Tampa Bulletin was purchased in 1959 and became twice weekly. In 1962 the paper moved to its current location of 2207 East 21st Avenue. It seems to be distributed mostly around the Sulphur Springs area of Tampa and I have not seen it much elsewhere. When I called The Florida Sentinel the person I spoke with was very kind. She was also familiar with my request and walked me through the process. She provided me with all the information I needed before going into the office to place the ad so I was well prepared. Because of this the process did not take long. I had no idea how to categorize it, so feel free to adjust as necessary. I went in with a friend to wander around, and they offered a cool, eclectic assortment of greeting cards, prints, artisanal honey, tees and tanks, and other miscellaneous items for purchase. Looking at their social media page, it looks as if they have had concerts here, and that local store owners have come in to print their own shirts. While we were there, someone was teaching a graphic design class to two students. Which actually led me to look at other class offerings - and then I signed up for a six week beginner's pottery class! My first class was last night, held at the shop after hours in the back warehouse, and it was perfect. Patrick Swayze's ghost never showed, but we learned the basics and building blocks to molding and sculpting clay from a very experienced instructor, and next week we make a mug.
