Not cheap, but just the cutest old world speciality market with high quality items. Have to start with the obvious -- everything here is seriously expensive. I don't use it as a grocery store, but for specialty goods and other treats. I go most often for the general culinary items; it's easy to find an excellent red vinegar or a fancier-than-usual dry pasta that can really elevate a dish. I like their pastries (which I believe are from Proof) and many of the dishes in the sliding fridge are great. Funny enough, I think the meat and produce are the worst bets here. Most of their produce is really not much better than grocery store quality, and even when it's some great seasonal find, you'd better off going to the local farmer's market or the Hollywood market. A lot of it is not stored very thoughtfully; I've seen bruised or overripe fruit more times than I think is acceptable given the price. read more

I've been back 3x this week just for the blood oranges that are in season. I asked the woman behind the counter if she tried the oranges and she said she baked a blood orange cake! Pretty sweet. Love that. Cookbook has an amazing selection of veggies & fruits in season, beautiful flowers, delectable cheeses, breads, pastries etc. etc. etc. Customer service has been generally friendly as well as helpful. My only gripe is that I've purchased some pricey meats, fish and poultry with expiration dates for the date I purchased when I wasn't planning to prepare it that day. So check expiration dates on meats and stuff if you aren't cooking immediately. I assume things will last a few days at minimum but not the case... Glad to hear that more locations are opening up. Fancy fresh neighborhood market :) petite but full of interesting goodies! I just needed some change so I got a peanut butter cookie. Flaky crumbly and nutty. Yum. There were green almonds by the counter, I was definitely intrigued and the nice lady let me try one. It's basically like the fruit version where the dry almonds we know it are enclosed in. Fruit of the almond? The almond was definitely... Milky? Anyways I loved it and probably would go back to get a lb of that cause I've never seen it anywhere! after my haircut at lucas last saturday, it was nice to discover this cute little foodie shop in the space where a really lame clothing store once stood...for about 3 months. (update 2020 -- I shave my own head and lucas is long gone) i grabbed one of those (forget the brand name) green bottles of sparkling water and a $3 egg biscuit, which was really two crustless slices of bread with an herb/eggplant omelette between them. solid, but maybe a wee bit spendy. (update 2020 -- still a wee bit spendy, but the deliciousness and creativity at cookbook is without equal. every trip there is a learning experience and inspiring culinary exploration) at any rate, cookbook feels like it is adding to the quality of the area, and hopefully their menu doesn't conflict or take business away from chango. My husband and I LOVE Cookbook! We love that we can just walk here to get groceries as needed and he LOVES to get their Prociutto Dan's in the morning. I love that they carry a variety of items and most things seem to be locally sourced/organic. The space is tight but they work it out. The staff is aways friendly and helpful. It is mainly street parking here but I've never had a problem with finding parking nearby and walking over, as needed. It's a great alternative when you want to avoid crowds or lines at the grocery store. There's usually not much of a wait when you buy groceries here. I have also been pleased with the other hot items that they serve here if you don't have time to cook and want to eat something already made. Thanks Cookbook, are local grocery store! It was Sandra V. who told me about Cookbook about a year ago. She said, "Noemi! You have to check this place out. YOU would LOVE this place." I have to say, she was right on! It has taken me a while, but it was after visiting Chango for the first time a few months back that I decided to check out Cookbook. I walked in and I was greeted with a gentle friendly "Hello, how are you?" (not the over-bubbly-in- your-face-that-makes-me-want-to-shut-down-hello, but the kind of hello that puts me at ease). Along with the "hello", I immediately noticed the aromas of the different fresh spices in the air like sage, thyme, mint, etc. Even the natural lighting of this place made it even more inviting. This place screams "I'm local, organic, (and let's not forget), sustainable!" Seriously, most, if not all, of their produce, meats, dairy, and poultry come from nearby farms, which I'm totally all about. All of their produce are names you would find at local farmers' markets, such as the Givens Farms, Jaime Farms, etc. And you won't find every single thing you would find at conventional markets. No. They sell what's in season and what's available. Let me tell you, they don't disappoint. I must say, It was their eggs that really caught my attention. You see, a lot of places, even Whole Foods and Trader Joes claim that their eggs come from "Free Range" and "Cage Free" chickens. But, this does not always translate into necessarily happy chickens that get to see the light of day and play in the pasture with other chickens. I could get into it, but I'll spare you. Anyway, I began asking about their eggs, and the young lady happily told me that these eggs come from a local farm, less than 200 miles away, where the chickens are naturally grown, pasture raised, and grass fed. They are Springville Natural Happy Hens, from Green Jeans Ranch. :) Let me tell you, these eggs are densely packed! And you know what else? They are cheaper than the ones you will find, at say, Whole Foods! For a whole dozen, Cookbook charges $4.50. I've been to some places where eggs will cost $5.50 to $7.00! So, I think it's quite a bargain. Think about how much you pay at a restaurant when ordering eggs, even when they're NOT free range and organic. Okay. I'll stop. It's just that I'm a firm believer in the whole "you are what you eat" philosophy. I mean, I've had some "bad for you" food that left me feeling quite crummy. :( I have to say, I really that the people who work here are so informed and passionate about what they're are selling. Plus, they are easy going, and won't breathe down your throat. In addition to their produce, meats, dairy, and poultry, they have prepared foods, like salads, mini sandwiches, and desserts, which are to die for! You have to go early though, since they often sell out of their stuff quickly. I really love their canneles, chewy and delicious! Oh, la la! They just have so many goodies here. Furthermore, when at Cookbok,it's easy to forget that you're in a city of over 9 million and counting. It definitely has that small town/village charm. This place is a treasure, for sure. Yeah. I love this neighborhood grocery store. Like a few of the reviews mentioned below, it is on the pricey side, but the quality of the food you get here is really above and beyond what you could get at your traditional grocery store. I don't come here to do my weekly grocery shopping but I do come here for a few specific items. They have incredible bread - baguettes, loafs, individual sized options. I also love their sandwiches. They have one veggie option and one meat option - you can't really go wrong with either one. On the weekends these are usually gone by 2pm. My boyfriend swears by the canelé. And their fruit is always spectacular. They also have some packaged goods that I have yet to try like sauces and pastas but I bet they're good too. They also sell flowers - some by the bunches and some individually - that are so beautiful. read more

As soon as I walked into Cookbook, I was greeted by a friendly employee. I asked, "is this a health food store?" She replied, "nope, just a little neighborhood market." That is a very accurate description. A neighborhood market with some finer items. The store itself is very small. That's okay because they make the most of the space. There's a little bit of everything here: fresh produce, a refrigerated section with prepared foods and bottled juices, a deli section, specialty cheeses, a meat section with fresh fish & meat and of course, cookbooks. I did see some cheeses and chocolate here that you wouldn't see on the average corner market. That's why I said that Cookbook offers finer items. It was lunch time when I was here, so I took advantage. I bought a slice of bread with smoked trout and herbed Ricotta cheese, a cold pressed ginger and limeade juice and some tomatoes. I wanted to like this place but every time I've been in here the "mean girl" employees make it literally impossible to enjoy shopping in peace. As a small business going through a pandemic with PLENTY of competition, you are the last place I will recommend to my friends or family to shop at. I guess the moral of the story without telling it and putting anyone on blast with possibly very good intentions, is: Never assume the customer won't want to pay a high price for a quality item. I appreciate the transparency in letting someone know what they're about to pay, but the cheaper item I was talked into ended up being doughy on the verge of raw in the middle. So it wasn't worth it. Cookbook has been a "savior" during COVID-19. But the store is so small that it's hard to social distance and folks are now standing in line to get in. I choose not to stand in lines, so will have to try going super early to get my eggs, cheese, gingerbeer and veggies. And if they ever get the chicken pot pies back...they're first on my list! Two stars for inventory, minus three stars for attitude. And minus another star for a lingering bad taste in my mouth because I now know I cannot justify shopping there again. I went in at closing time to buy a steak. I was willing to spend up to $30. After being tersely hurried along not once, not twice, but THREE times within literally thirty seconds of arriving in the store, It dawned on my that my business was not valued, and perhaps even resented at Cookbook. This, despite being admitted at the last moment in the first place. This is a nice store but the management/owner is suffering from a bit of an inflated sense of fabulousness, so much so that she felt perfectly justified in trying to simultaneously browbeat me for the privelege of buying something in her store and herd me out of the shop with a superior and disgusted gait. ... No, no, one thousand times no. Here's a newsflash: I was prepared to spend up to $40 there just now. I was just getting ready to select the shrinkwrapped packaged porterhouse steak I wanted when I was snappily herded along for the third and final time. Not only did this instantly inspire me to come home and make a quiche instead, but I felt so unwelcome I could not get out the door fast enough. I said I couldn't afford the steak (This is a big lie. At that stage I did not want to give them one penny of my money.), and then rushed out the door. I do not like to patronize establishments, no matter how well conceived, where I am made to feel unwelcome. I am just grateful I didn't trip over the lowered gate track when I stumbled in my hurry to get the hell out of there. I walked up the hill to my house thinking that I will be avoiding Cookbook in the future. If you had just waited ten or fifteen more seconds for me to choose my meat, you would be $26 richer today and several hundred or a thousand dollars richer in 2018 courtesy of my neighborhood business.
