Specifically writing my first review just so I can call out Continental Divide for being a totally overrated sham. Sure, the mysterious non-sign and too-limited seating screams "exclusive" loud enough for gullible Virginians who fancy themselves cosmopolitan to think it's worth the long wait. It's not. See that one star? That's for putting on such a successful hoax. Nice job, CD.
I'd wanted to try out the place for a while, but the lines were always intimidatingly long, and they don't take reservations (more trickery!). My boyfriend and I finally were hungry enough at an early enough hour on a Friday (6 PM) to beat the line. Well, we did beat the line, but that didn't stop the hostess from taking 10 minutes just to GREET us, let alone take our names and tell us there would be a 15 minute wait. Okay, I see a margarita bar. We'll wait.
Well, my first margarita (the higher end version with real ingredients instead of mix) was pretty good -- not the best I've had in my life, but certainly better than most. The one star can be for that too. At this point, I was willing to forgive the bartender for not asking if I wanted salt (I did), then not putting it on. Unfortunately, I wasn't after the second margarita -- after I requested salt for the second, I saw the bartender actually put salt on the rim, mix the ingredients, shake it with the SALTED glass, then pour my newly sodium-infused drink into another salted glass. Maybe that's how they do it in Texico?, I thought. Well I hope not, because it tasted awful. Had to ask him to remake it, which he did.
We were seated when they said we'd be, roughly 30 minutes after arriving. Boyfriend and I order loaded nachos and some beef enchilada special. Nachos arrive first soon enough (~10 minutes), they are remarkably mediocre for a place that specializes in Mexican-American food (I've had better nachos both at South Street Brewery and Devil's Backbone). My boyfriend muses that the ingredients are Costco product. His hypothesis is confirmed after the disgusting enchilada (??) arrives. Not only is the ground beef positively grade school cafeteria quality, but there are so many hot peppers in the thing, it's practically inedible. The heat didn't add any flavor; it was just pointless, overpowering heat. They even managed to make the rice & beans flavorless. I am rarely one to refuse a carry-out bag when there is food left over, but we left about half of what we ordered on the table.
Best part was when our server returned silently to drop off our credit card and receipt after paying, then turned and walked off before we had the chance to tell her that she gave us SOMEONE ELSE'S CARD. Nice one. It took at least another 5 minutes before we could flag her down to tell her what had happened.
I would go to Guadalajara or Aqui Es Mexico any day over this awfulness. Who am I kidding, I'd even go to Chi-Chi's (R.I.P.) or Taco Bell first. If you're in the area, check out Wild Wings by the train station, or Mel's Cafe, Bella's, or Maya just down the street. All better than Continental Divide. Don't Get In Here! read more
