Contact is the kind of small, curated record store that I love to see. I only just found out about their shop recently, but am really excited to check them out again soon. They are located in an alley off 49th (aptly named Alley 49), that has a number of cool small shops. Their shop is towards the end on the right (if coming from 49th.) As you walk in, new arrival LPs are the first thing you see, with several boxes of 7"s to your left. They also have several bins lining the left and back walls. While there are some smaller sections for genre's like blues, jazz, reggae, etc., the focus here is definitely more in the rock and alternative realm. Pricing for what they had seemed reasonable. Given they have a strong selection, I would expect slightly elevated pricing, but nothing out of the ordinary here. While I wasn't able to find anything to take home during my visit, the person working the counter let me do my thing browsing the store, which is my preference (over being bugged about what you're looking for.) Obviously to each their own, but suited my needs just fine! read more

The store is nestled in the middle of an ally of cafe's and gift shops. The shop itself is small, but nicely organized. I've been to record stores around the world and Contact Records is well organized and they go the extra mile to: sleeve all the records & apply pricing stickers on the sleeves (and not the jackets). The stickers include detailed/clear notes (when applicable), which really gives the sense that the owner loves music/records. The shelves holding the LPs are well organized and not too overstuffed to where it's difficult to flip through the LPs. They also have sturdy pull-out drawers, which make browsing very pleasant. Most things that I saw in the regular shelves were priced very fairly. More expensive genres and collectible LPs are either on the wall or in a separate crate near the counter. These higher-end LPs were also fairly priced; even if they are more expensive than the average LP in the shelves. As far as selection goes: There's a fairly good selection of rock, jazz, blues, and hip/hop. Most LPs sold here are used. There's only a handful of new LPs, and they're indie/alt artists. I wouldn't say there's a ton of mainstream "popular" albums here, but you may just find a gem if you dig long enough. read more

Stumbled into this place very happily! Was looking for coffee and took a wrong turn but ended up staying. Small shop but quality records that are clean and well organized. Lots of good finds too. Walked away with the essential Jimi Hendrix. Prices ranging $10 for this records and up to $50 for more collectibles like the original Japanese version of the same record. All killer and no filler! This little shop has it all!They buy and sell records and the owners really know there stuff. Very impressive and always a great visit. Tiny but mighty. Highly curated, reasonably priced, and has a great selection. It seems really small, but their drawer system keeps the place pretty densely packed. I always find something I like when I'm here and everyone is always really nice. I've seen them open new vinyl for someone if they wanted to hear it. Great service that other snobs in the area would never provide. read more

The "good things, small packages" saying thrives & shines here. Quality new and used vinyl is available a minute walk away from the MacArthur BART station, there's TONS of parking and damned if the folk working here aren't NICE, HELPFUL, KNOWLEDGEABLE and. well, good looking too! This small package is well designed for maximum punch and the curated selection favors MUSIC over hipness, SOUL over sellers, the tried and true over trendy. There doesn't seem to be a bad title for sale here, whether from Nigeria, Pakistan, Clarksdale or The Richmond District in SF. Whether released last week OR 100 years ago. Prices on used or collectible LPs are very good, and prices paid for such is stellar, never mind the even better trade prices offered. Prices on new LPs are competitive with much bigger stores/chains. No BIG BOX quantity over quality approach by middle aged. burned out record store personal still trying to figure out where the 80's went - never mind previous decades!), Contact has a fresh feel combined with the type of experience and level of confidence in what is going on here that is real and SOLID. No trendy, hipster posturing here, just a devotion to great music and a great way to listen to it - on RECORDS. Just a great little shop! read more

The way they have maximized the use of space here is phenomenal. Big props for doing that and somehow managing to include a listening station. Hannah is awesome! Super chill, friendly, and knowledgeable. There is plenty of great stuff to be found. I had to cut myself off at a certain point, but I'll be back for sure. Love this place!! read more

Struggling with a 4 star rating...super boooooo! For the back in 5 post on the door 45 minutes after they opened...super duper booo for having to kneel on a dirty ass floor to dig...but! Space is space, and these cats had something I really wanted, for a far better price than stupid discogs...so Covid right???? Suggestion? have a stool to dig in your under crates! read more

Excellent vinyl record store. Small on the inside but what I love is that whomever buys for the store is extremely picky which I love. Found a near perfect Depeche Mode album for only 15. And I felt that the value was excellent. Plus it is only a short walk from my home. I will be returning over and over again. read more

Love this store. Owners Andrew and Hannah pack maximum quality into a very small space. They have really good prices on used records and the new vinyl is reasonable as well. I especially like the the soft spot they have for oddball instrumental records. Can't believe how lucky I am to have this store in my neighborhood. Every 2 weeks at payday I carve some off and hit Contact Records for the killer jams! read more

Contact Records is the epitome of small foot print+great selection+great prices+passionate owner. This shop is inside a shipping container and somehow they fit a rack of sliding record drawers on one side and a chair with a folding TV tray is their one listening station. They have a great selection of used classic rock, 3 drawers filled with jazz, 1 drawer of soul music, and a collector's drawer with some Japanese pressings of Dark Side of the Moon, Rolling Stones and some other goodies. Great selection, all the records in VG+ to Near Mint condition, and prices are reasonable. read more

They say good things come in small packages. For Contact Records it can be said that GREAT things come in tiny spaces. Don't let this little shop fool you, it's busting at the seems with amazing music. About half of the shop is dedicated to rock, while the rest lends itself to soul, jazz, world, and just about everything you'd want in a record store with one exception: contemporary electronic and dance 12's. Based upon the quality of the bins I'd love to see some dance offerings of equal caliber. However, this is just a minor footnote. The pricing is fair with some bargain gems mixed in for sure. Oh yeah, the "Contact Favorites" and collectible bins were really rad. Hannah and Andrew are lovely and a joy to talk music with. I was hunting for a title that wasn't in stock but Andrew offered up something else by the same artist which hit the spot. I can't wait to visit again. read more

This might be my new favorite record store in town. Yes, it's very small but the selection is near perfect. No junk records to simply take up space. Great, fairly priced LPs and cassettes. They even have some of those Mississippi Records compilation tapes. I will definitely be back! read more

got some great records here yesterday. their world section... they should call it their space section cause its ~out~ of this world hehehh. but no, really, i was so impressed with their selection. got a great psychadelic cumbia record and a super fun pakistani record. the person at the front desk was really helpful and nice. she let us listen to the pakistani record before we purchased. sounds like they've got some really cool records from japan coming in, so maybe keep an eye at for those :) read more
