If you want to know what the child of the INS office and the DMV office is like, go to the Peruvian consulate. Or better yet, call. You will never find anyone to talk to, and you can't leave a message, either, because the (one and only) voicemail box is always full. If you go, get ready for the slowest service ever. The clerks walk like they're knee deep in wet cement. Things that should take five minutes take forty-five. This is ridiculous! It shouldn't be this fricking difficult to get good service and resources from your home country! read more

First of all, their hours on yelp is incomplete- they are also open on the 3rd Saturday of every month, which makes life much easier for folks like me who lives in the South Bay and doesn't want to take time off work to go to SF for this. That alone deserves 5 stars for being so considerate. Second of all, if you haven't already, check out their facebook page for the latest and greatest news! (since when are consulates so forward-thinking and tech-savvy?) The office has a convenient location (2 minutes' walk from Powell BART) and very nice staff. I went there to get my tourist visa. Upon walked in, a young staff greeted me and asked what I was there for; after explaining and showed her my passport, she said I don't need a tourist visa after all! Apparently Peru just signed an agreement 3 weeks ago to grant citizens of certain countries with US green cards visa-free entry into Peru! Ugh! I could have saved myself a trip! Anyways, the staff showed me the posts they had on facebook about the agreement, and instructed me on what documents to print and bring with me for my trip. Even though I didn't get any real service at this consulate, I felt welcomed and helped. read more

I completely disagree with the comment made by Claudia. Everyone in the office is absolutely considerate and extremely helpful. Every time I have gone there, I received excellent service. And the times I have called, I have always gotten through. The majority of the individuals come extremely unprepared. The result: it wastes not only the Consulado's time, but also other individuals' time. Hence it is not the department's fault, but the actual individuals who come unprepared and expect to get service as soon as he or she walks right out of the elevator doors. Thus when I go there, I have all my paperwork ready to go and patiently wait my turn. Finally, every single person who works in the Consulado is a very hard worker who deserves more credit then what he or she gets. It is not an easy job and not anyone can do it. I would like for all the people who BITCH, yes I said BITCH, about this place to actually spend one full day working here. So until you do, then I would advise to think twice before talking. And one more thing, every time I have gone to Peruvian events, there are MANY individuals that complain about the EVERYTHING, and when asked to help out, all of the sudden he or she simply finds some ludicrous excuse as to why he or she can't. So my advice is to really think twice before you open your mouth and start badmouthing. Had a wonderful experience at the consulate. Got there around 11AM, fortunately there was only 1 other person there so had only a few minutes of waiting for our turn. I'd carried all the items listed on their website checklist but for one. When I mentioned I had a scan of it on the phone the lady at the counter offered to print it out if I emailed it to her! I was expecting something like "Come back with a print out when you can" given the general apathetic consulate experiences I've had in the past; so this blew my mind! She then meticulously checked through all papers, was willing to answer any questions, handed me the pick-up receipt, and I was out of there all in 20 minutes! Pick up was in 4 business days, also the receipt had both mine and my husband's passport #, so just one of us could pick up both. And as expected pickup (I went a week later) was smooth as well. read more

My experience in this consulate was excellent. We went on a Saturday(they are open on the 3rd saturday of every month) with the required documents around 9:15 and there was a long queue in front of us. After around half an hour of waiting, a nice lady came towards us and said saturday was a day for the peruvian people for passport renewal and collected all our documents so that we need not wait here for a long time. She said that they will have a interview over phone and collected all our details. I mailed them back after 3-4 days as I did not get a response and they said the visas are approved and they will be sent to us. They also returned the extra money they had collected from us by mistake at the consulate. We didnt even stand up from our seats. They came to our seats and took care of us.!!! read more

This place is awesome! Great service. They seem to have put all the bad things behind. They are on the 10th floor of an old building in downtown SF. When you enter, you have to take a ticket by entering your DNI (for Peruvians) or by clicking "Sin DNI" for others without a DNI. They have 3 working windows and you are usually called within a few minutes depending on other cases. Plan to arrive at 8:50am if you want first service when they open at 9:00am. The crowd inside is usually Peruvians seeking a passport / registration or Indians working in Silicon Valley seeking visas. Strangely, Peru requires Indians to get a tourist visa, so you're bound to see a lot of Indians headed to Machu Picchu. I got myself a tourist visa and the process took 3 days. I submitted all the documents and they thoroughly checked them before accepting my application. Paid $30. They asked me to call after 3 days. On calling, I was told that the visa was issued and my passport was ready for pickup. It was that easy. I went in after a few days, took a ticket and sat down. The gentleman behind the window recognized my face and brought my passport out immediately. I didn't have to wait at all! Overall, a great experience. read more

My experience with the consulate was quite pleasant. I went here last Wednesday to submit my paperwork for the visa. Make sure you have everything on the checklist in their website including a copy of your visa. Process is you go in print a ticket number. Mine was 13 and I got there at 9 05 and was done around 945. Today I reached at 845 for picking up my passport. They opened before time , took my id and promptly returned my passport. Although they never called me to tell me my visa was ready. But when I called them on Monday they did mention it ll be ready. Overall it's pretty good process. read more

As good as it gets, If you have your paperwork in order the visa process is a breeze. It took about 30 minutes on the first day for a family of 4 to get pictures, finger print and what not all done. The next trip to pick visas was less than 5 minutes. Advice, do your homework first and prepare the paperwork, arrive early and be patient if you come in late and are in the que. Overall a good experience getting a tourist visa. I went in for the interview at 9 on a Monday morning. There was just another person getting something done. I had all documents in order and my interview was over in 5 min. I was not sure if I needed to show hotel reservations for all days of travel, so I erred on the side of caution and booked them in advance anyway. I had also printed out an itinerary. The lady at the counter (who was professional and polite) carefully checked everything - itinerary, flight dates, hotel reservations for all days, bank statement printout & current US residency status. I was not asked anything else. She asked me to come back after 3 days. I went after a week and got my passport in under 2 minutes. I would have given them 5 stars if they would have answered their phone at least once. read more

I had a great experience getting a visa. Went in a little apprehensive based on the reviews but came out pleasantly surprised. I reached the consulate Tuesday morning at 8.45 AM (opens at 9AM). The room number is 1075. The consulate opened sharp at 9am and I was 4th in the queue. My turn came around 9.40am and took about 5 min to get fingerprinted and for the agent to verify the paperwork. The people I interacted with fluent with english. Make sure your paperwork is all there and err on the side of caution. Their website isn't very good but they have a page which lists all the paperwork required. I then paid $30/visa in cash and was done around 9.50am. Next day I got a call that my visa was ready for pickup and pickup super quick as well. Fastest visa turnaround ever. read more

I want to thank the people that work in the Hartford (conneticut) Consulado General del Peru, but specially to the employee Edgardo Popolizio. I have been trying for several days to contact the Consulado del Peru in chicago with NO RESPONSE. Called them to all of their 3 phone numbers and nobody answers and when you try to leave a message...the voice mail is FULL so you cannot. I sent emails to 3 different people that work there with my questions and still no answer. Finally, i decided to call the one in Conneticut and they were VERY nice, polite but overall, HELPFUL!!!! So my 5 stars go to the Consulado General del Peru for their good work!! Way to go!! and THANK YOUUUU!!! Wish i could do my paperwork with them ...sigh... read more

I wrote a detailed letter of complaint and sent it to the Ministry of External Affairs in Lima, the Consulate in SF and the Embassy in DC. In about 3 weeks I received a response from the Director of Consular Affairs in Lima. He asked me to view some Youtube videos and identify the SF consular official who had harassed me. Soon afterwards the Director forwarded me the response of the SF Consulate to my complaints. The SF consulate completely lied about my allegations, so I had to refute their response and send it to the Director in Lima. I'm not sure what they are doing about the complaint right now, but clearly the Peruvian authorities are aware of the problem lady at the SF consulate and are trying to address the matter. I am quite impressed with the responses to my complaint I have received from the Director in Lima. read more

One of the worst consulates ever. I've tried calling for about 2 hours, somebody will pick up the phone and hang up right away. After keep trying for 2 hours straight I finally got put on hold for 20 minutes for them to again hung up on me. I then keep trying and got a very unfriendly lady answered the phone to tell me to call back tomorrow at 10.00am and then guess what?!?!?! She hung up right away... read more

Peru consulate in SF is highly inefficient & disorganized. The people who work there appear very courteous though. I've been there over 2 working business days for my visa and returned empty handed. The first time around they were closed w/o notice (no one picks up the phone, their website is not up to date). The second time around I waited in line from 10a till 2p and left in frustration. The third time around I went there in the morning at 8:25a and was second in line (they open at 9a). My turn to talk to the staff came at 10:30a; they took 45 mins to process my paperwork subsequently, only to tell me that it would take longer. Eventually I had to leave and return to south bay for a lunch appt, so they advised me to return again later that afternoon. I returned back at 3p and they processed my visa paperwork by 4p. read more

This review is for getting the visa for Peru. This place feels totally like a third world country typical Government Office. They never reply to emails. Period. Phone - Sometimes only if they have the mood to. I had to try like 8 times and only 1 try was well worth the call. I went there last Thursday, and I was expecting to receive my passport the very same day, which I never got back. They said it will take 2 business days. Even with working Saturday, I did not recieve call until I called them on Wednesday asking for my passport and they said it's ready for pick up. So an advice, if you are short of time, dont expect them to give you the passport the very same day. Be the first one in line in order to get the number early. They are very slow people there. While getting the passport back, it was easy, she came out at 9:00 am, with all the people who came there to collect their passport and returned it at that time itself. Over all, my experience wasn't that great. I felt I was dealing with a third world country. Very uncurteous and disorganized. Also, if you and your wife are travelling together, please take seperate forms, printouts of itinerary, bank balance, sererate hotel itinerary everything. They want it to look like it's all individual application ( which is a valid point ). The worst part comes now, they only gave us 12 days of Visa., That's just insane. Everywhere I saw they atleast gave 90 days of visa. Never ever I have heard of anyone getting 12 days of visa. One of my friend got 1 year of visa ( but she didnot apply at the San Francisco. It was in Chicago ). Everything's the same. Even other people who came with me were shocked to get 12 days of visa. On asking her, what if my flight gets delayed or something, she said, go to the immigration and pay the penalty and your stay will be extended. I just stormed out of there, as that lady never seemed to be interested in answering anything. Someone give her coffee please ! read more

3 stars because me and my friend both got our visas on the same day. which is great we didn't have to make another trip to collect the passports. $30 is cheap alo. Here are some tips. They were very slow. Best is to get there at around 8am. We got there at 8am, we were the second in line, and we got the visa stamped at 11am. if you are late, things will start slowing down as time goes. passport green card take photocopies of these 2 in case they ask, I didn't and he took copies of front and back of passport and green card, and said I should bring them next time. flight tickets hotel reservation for every night while in country (should have full name) funds (statements should be most recent and in your name) They will slowly and meticulously check if every night of your itinerary is accounted for, in terms hotel reservations. Make sure your full name is on the confirmation email from the hotel. just be patient, don't plan on being anywhere else so you won't get impatient. don't piss them off for any reason, it didn't look like customer satisfaction was one of their goals. clearly, not making a single mistake was one their goals. very slow. going by the books was another goal, they didn't want to use logic and make judgements. looked like they didn't want any chance of getting caught by their boss with a mistake. read more

It is very easy to get a tourist visa to Peru at this consulate. No appointment is needed, we arrived on a Thursday at 11:30 and out in 15 minutes. You only need the documents mentioned in their website, and they can make copies or print out documents in case you forget. My husband and I were issued a 1 year multiple entry tourist visa and also received a nice brochure about Peru. Passports were ready for pick up in 5 business days. The only hassle is finding parking, especially with all the construction going on nearby. read more

This is for the one in Atlanta this is the 3rd time I try to file my DNI, stupid people the first time they lost my paperwork I thought it was in process and I find out 3 months later that is was lost. The second time the consule forgot to put his stamp and signature in my paperwork I called Peru and they told me they sent it back because he didn't do that. I am hoping this 3rd time around their not idiots and my paperwork is sent correctly. This consulate is the worst! I've trying to get through for already 3 hours just today but no luck, they DO NOT pick up the phone. I went to get my DNI renewed back in March, today is June 28th and I have not even received a phone call saying that my DNI is ready to be picked up. They are stupid beyond stupid, I went there because I needed to get a new passport, change my marital status and address, and I needed to inscribe my children as Peruvians as well even though they were born here in California. They told me that they couldn't do absolutely anything until I renew my DNI, I asked the lady, could you please change my marital status while you are renewing it and changing address and they say no. Now I have to go again to register my kids and then make a appointment to prove I am married to my husband, and then get a new passport with my name changed and everything. They are not helpful at all!! I was there waiting for a while, there is no order whatsoever, all the people there were so pissed off and there was this lady that came out and told us to be patient because all the people who work there are just volunteers. When I went inside I was bullied by this old freaking lady, she was asking me why didn't I renew my DNI long time ago and I told her " because it is not needed here in the USA where I live" and she straight out told me " so then why are you here bothering us if you don't need it?' I told her I am here because I want to inscribe my children as Peruvians that's all but for that I need a new DNI and then she started saying something under her breath when I just got pissed off at her and told her to better shut up and mind her business and take care of the lady she was taking care off. People are very RUDE and they treat you like we are beneath them. Oh and this goes to Jacqueline, are you related to the people working there??? because I am going to upload a video to youtube showing how many times I am calling the Consulado with no answer. All my Peruvian friends here in the Bay Area say the same. I even called the emergency number and no one answered, NO ONE! The only good one in the Consulado is the guy, I don't know his name but yeah he is pretty efficient compared to all those bitches working there. I had heard very scary things about this place. But they're all stale. This place has improved to the extent that they don't inconvenience anyone. I went today to the Peruvian Consulate in San Francisco on Market Street and I was prepared to spend a boring and long day because it was like that always when I went to do my paperwork for passport, DNI, etc. What a surprised, the office was remodeled nicely, the people very courteous, and it wasn't slow at all. I arrive earlier than 9 am but I went to the suit 1069, that was the only problem, I was waiting and it didn't say You need to go by the suite 1072 but I saw people going around so I followed them and started getting my ticket and waiting for them to call me. I was out at 10:20, and my new passport will be ready next Wednesday Yay! We arrived at the consulate around 10:15 on a Saturday (yes they are open every third Sat of the month!), and our number came within 30 mins. We were welcomed with starbucks coffee and some butter cookies. On the counter the guy was extremely polite and looked at our documents in detail. We didn't have printouts for our local flights within Peru, so he was nice enough to ask us to email it to him, and then he printed then out. One of the lady working there even provided us with brochures of Lima, Cusco, Arequipa without even asking! read more

This is about my experience trying to get a tourist visa. This is an extremely inefficient (very very very slow) operation. You can count on spending a half day just waiting to get your application reviewed. Suggestion: Go very early in the morning, before opening time, because there is a line there even before they open. read more

There really is no system or efficiency here. You need to be patient and make multiple visits.

If there is an option I will put ZERO people don't answer the phone at all. They are not willing to help. I guess they treat foreigners better than Peruvians. They are too lazy to do their jobs and not everything is posted. There are not directions for the steps to follow. Are we suppose to read minds?. All the people that gave them 5 stars are foreigners asking for a visa or something. Maybe the same people that work at the Consulate wrote a review. The best tourist visa experience! I've visited many countries and so have a lot of experience and heartache with paperwork and requirements to obtain tourist visas. Peruvian visa was the most easiest, least expensive and straight forward of all. The official who took our paperwork was nice as well. The great thing is they're open one Saturday of every month which makes it convenient if you don't live in the city. Their website is in Spanish but you can translate page if you're using chrome. Their website doesn't give you mailing info for passport return but I sent them an email asking if I could bring a self addressed return usps express mail envelope and they said yes( email response was within the hour). And when you make it to Peru, you'll see the same warmth and friendly people everywhere you go. I Peru! read more
