As others mentioned there was an odd smell. 2nd floor, I was also told I couldn't sit there as it was for children and teens, hardly anyone was there. There's a side room for programming for parents and children, which seems like a great resource. The best thing is that it is sometimes opened until 9pm, not so easy to find, grateful for that. Hope this location can be utilized more.

Four stars because this is a PUBLIC library, meaning I don't pay a penny to use its services and…read moreresources. If this were a private BUSINESS, I might give it 3 stars tops, and this is the main reason why: It's basically a hang out spot for the unemployed and possibly unhoused folks in the neighborhood. I don't think I've ever felt threatened or unsafe here, but if I were coming for a quiet place to read or study and didn't have use of my trusty noise-blocking earbuds which work very well, it would NOT be a good choice. Today there was a guy who was talking to a hallucinatory entity non-stop and neither staff nor other patrons seemed to bat an eyelash...it was just business as usual, lol. Call me paranoid, but I would not risk leaving any valuables unattended for much more than ten seconds. The attached photo of signage in one of the two unisex bathrooms (which you have to actually sign your name to a wait list for if both are occupied and there's a wait), gives you a pretty good idea of the urban reality this place is situated in. Bright spots: the staff are quite nice, helpful, and do their best as they can. There is a nice collection of offbeat movies (BD/DVD) and music (CD) that you can rent, with a wonderful self-service scanner! I appreciate that they're open till 9pm on Tue/Th (albeit just 6pm MWF, 2pm Saturdays, and closed Sundays). They have some nice programs, like free English conversation classes for immigrants, basic tech help workshops, etc. In conclusion, can't really complain. It is where it is, and what it is.

The amount of services and organizations that are housed in this building is amazing. They have domestic violence organizations, LGBTQ organizations, CSA organizations, and I believe that they may also hold some groups there during the week. Basically every single time I walk through the doors I'm reminded of all the amazing services that Boston provides for those who live in the area, and all the people who make giving their time to these organizations a priority. It's humbling to know that a place and so many people like this exists.

I love the Boston public library system!…read more To provide some context, as a kid I loved going to the library but in the country I grew up, libraries weren't free. And they definitely did not have any non-reading materials that the libraries around here have. Anyway, I was a voracious reader back then but I lost touch along the way. So I'm thankful to the Boston libraries, especially the Brighton branch, for reintroducing libraries and the love of reading to me. The Brighton branch is great! The reason I chose this branch was because it's close to home (I visit once a week is probably an underestimation!). But the librarians are friendly, the space is well maintained and clean, and the timings are great (open on Saturdays, say what?!). There are even comfy chairs throughout the library to sit and read. Apart from traditional books, the library provides DVDs (movies, sitcoms, documentaries, etc.), graphic novels, organizes events, etc. and caters to all age groups. Thank you, Boston, for such a wonderful public resource.

The librarians have come across as unfriendly and impatient, particularly toward kids. Instead of feeling like a warm, inviting space for families, it often feels tense and uncomfortable. Libraries should be places where children feel encouraged to explore books, ask questions, and build a love of reading. I hope the library can work on creating a more positive and kid-friendly atmosphere, because the community truly deserves that kind of environment

There's an elevator and stairs right when you walk in to make it accessible to everyone. The librarians are super friendly and when you walk in you have the option to take a left (heading into the children's space) or take a right. No matter which direction you take, you can do a full circle and end up back at the front desk area. Great flow and setup that creates a community feel. This library is full of books, seating, natural light, study desks by the windows looking out at Oak Square, computers and a printer, and more. So glad to see it back up and running in the neighborhood!

What a beautiful reinvention of the VFW in Fresh Pond! I used to participate in various activities that took place at the old VFW - an old, dirty looking, wood paneled, dimly lit hall. It didn't have much to recommend itself. My family recently rented out the hall/bar here to have a party. What a nice surprise when I walked in! Well lit, clean, new and roomy! The hall had tables that easily held the people attending (40?) for a sit-down meal that we brought with us. My parents provided a sound system and half the room was left open for a dance floor. The bartender that we had, Barbara (?) was awesome! She went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. The commercial kitchen that is available for use with hall rental is a great size. About a million degrees, and unfortunately the freezer was not on when we arrived so the dessert didn't make it (in a solid state) being stuck in the ice machine! Barbara later told me that there was a freezer behind the bar we could have used- next time! The bathrooms were well kept, and even with loud music and a couple kids running up and down the hall, nobody batted an eye at our presence. A great place, with plenty of parking for a party!

Good to know: 1)…read moreThis place is teeny tiny. 2) The selection skews heavily towards kids books and young adult fiction. 3) The hours are less than ideal; and it's closed on weekends. 4) On-hand media selection is limited. 5) There are only a few computers, but there's almost always one available. 6) There's a convenient drop box for books outside the front doors if you need to return books when they are closed. Better to know: 1) In person, over the phone, or on-line (with a minuteman library card) you can request materials from any other library in the minuteman network, and they will be delivered here. They will e-mail you when they get there, and all you have to do is walk in and hand them your card at the desk. Saving you time, and frustration. But still, the awesomeness of the library completely outweighs the fact that it's hours are not what I would want them to be. The staff is unbelievably friendly. Sometimes I feel silly for always checking out books that are less than the highest quality of literature (can I help it if young adult sci fi makes awesome bus reading?), but they don't judge. I'm also continually impressed with their DVD selection. Awesome service, awesome selection, less than awesome hours, but still definitely a good alternative to paying for books that I'll just have to move or paying to rent DVD's!
