All kinds of problems over at Emanuel. They let go of Peretz, the guy with a huge heart and conscientious soul, without explanation to anyone within the congregation, rabbis are having affairs with congregants, which wouldn't be so bad (I mean who really cares, gay or straight, I don't!) except that the congregation has chosen to try to hide it and then is continually punishing the rabbi involved. Can't become Head Rabbi when you've schtupped a congregant! What they don't deal with is the real issue of a rabbi who openly discriminates against children with special needs. And a special needs coordinator who isn't up to the task of her job and never has been. They claim to have the best special needs program, the best listening program and the best education program, however, congregants are leaving because it is becoming the Jonathan Jaffe show and really he's not a very good rabbi, but more of a soulless performer who hasn't the first idea of how to be a teacher or a leader and somewhere, he forgot to have a soul or a heart. Jaffe forced out the longtime Youth Education program head and brought in his own 23 year old pal to run the program. I don't know about you, but a 23 year old running one of the largest Jewish education programs in CA causes me pause. Does she have enough experience? Was she the right choice or is it, again, the Jonathan Jaffe show and who cares what is best for the congregation? Don't even get me started on the newly changed policy re the families who even though they send their kids to Brandais Hillel Day School, still need to sign their kids up for religious school and Hebrew school in order to become bar/bat mitzvah several years in advance so the Congregation can collect those funds even though those kids are getting a Jewish education every single day. Oh, and let's not forget the newbie rabbi who, at a babynaming, got the name of the mother wrong. These people are jokers and make the whole culture look small, greedy, heartless and ignorant. Get with the picture people and get your act together. Lastly, the propensity with which the administrator of the Temple and the head of the board make thinly veiled threats to anyone who might dare criticize or speak or write publicly about what Congregation Emanuel has become in direct conflict with the 1st Amendment. Now THATs what I want to teach my kids. (sarcasm) Emanuel is really a gross statement of what religion has become and what Judaism should never ever be.
It is absolutely facsinating that Yelp continues to try to remove this review. I wonder why? They keep claiming this post is in violation of their terms - I don't see how, because it is entirely first hand experience and is completely true. read more
