Standing tall in the Oconee Rivers Greenway, this art installation is designed as a "public example…read moreof creative architecture" by Los Angeles-based designer and educator Andrew Kovacs. The artwork is thirty-six twelve-foot brightly-colored columns at the entrance to the new Greenway Trail. The columns are spaced six feet apart and are standard 8" by 8" by 8" concrete masonry units. Each column is painted in two different colors, dematerializing the columns and providing an array of coloration to the field of columns. According to the statement, "The colors can be read in myriad ways, from diversity and individualism, to race and sexual liberation, while also commenting on the long history of brightly colored public art work." They are completely weatherproof but not weedproof. The ground has certainly picked up some local flora since it was installed. There is parking along the roadway and there are no barriers to enter the artwork. You can certainly selfie with them or use them as a background to a photo shoot. This is a very life like statue of Civil Rights pioneer Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was…read morededicated in January 2021. You will find this wonderful statue in the median, overlooking Mercedes Benz Stadium, at the intersection of Northside Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The statue is the work of Basil Watson, whose works have honored John Lewis, Queen Elizabeth II, Usain Bolt. The bronze statue sits 12 feet tall and is perched on a 6 foot pedestal. The sculpture has an uncanny resemblance to MLK and depicts King releasing a dove from his right hand. The sculpture's artwork is nice, but the inscriptions on the base takes it to another level. The front of the base reads, "DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968 / Dedicated by the /CITY of ATLANTA / 2021 / "HOPE MOVING FORWARD" / Sculptor: BASIL WATSON". Additionally, the MLK QUOTES "HATE CANNOT DRIVE OUT HATE; ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT", "DARKNESS CANNOT DRIVE OUT DARKNESS; ONLY LIGHT CAN DO THAT" and "IF YOU CAN'T FLY THEN RUN, IF YOU CAN'T RUN THEN WALK, IF YOU CAN'T WALK THEN CRAWL, BUT WHATEVER YOU DO YOU HAVE TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD" (my favorite), are all inscribed on the base as well. There is some metered street parking available if you would like to check out this sculpture up close and personal. I can on an early weekend morning and had no issue getting a good look at the statue. If you are quick, and traffic is slow, you may be able to park near the statue, jump out and take a quick look. I really like this statue and it overlooking the Arena makes for a great photo. With that being said, as with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop at all. I was there less than 10 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.

The wall itself is a 3/5 scale of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC, it stands six feet tall at the center and covers almost 300 feet from end to end. The wall like the one in D.C has exactly 58,272 names on it. The Vietnam conflict (it was never declared a war by Congress) lasted from about 1955-1975. As many of us know the conflict divided the country deeply and when the soldiers came back from the war they came back not as honored heros of a grateful nation; Instead their presence was greeted with scorn, anger and some soldiers were reportedly spit on and called baby killers. To add insult to injuries there were no such thing as wounded warrior projects or PTSD or any problems to help them get reacquainted back into society. As a result many committed suicide, turned to alcohol and drug-use. Most that served in the war that are still alive are all in their 70's, 80's and 90's and beyond. Many of them never talk about their time there and this memorial is a loving tribute to their friends, colleagues, and brothers who made the ultimate sacrifice. My friend came looking for his captain and his sergeant. His captain John M. Harrington was on panel 10E and line 118. A West Point graduate he along with SP4 Manzie Glover Jr. were assigned to Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade. On September 19, 1966, they were occupying a night position about 5 1/2 miles from Tay Ninh City when a friendly forces artillery round fell short and landed nearby. Both suffered fatal injuries in the incident. Sixteen other soldiers were injured, three seriously. His Sergeant Joseph R. Martinez was only 23 when he was KIA in Feb. 1967. From what I understand he left behind a wife and two young children. When we were there there were people from all generations there some bringing framed photos and flowers of their loved ones. The wall was made possible by the Fannin County Veterans and the Blue Ridge United Methodist Church who generously donated parts of their land for the display and allowed visitors to park in their church parking lot. Looking like a large grey globe, until you get close to it you can't see that there is a figure INSIDE the globe. Hence the name, "Self Portrait." Unveiled last week, the artwork is by artist Jaume Plensa (b. 1955, Barcelona, Spain). It is part of the Renew Atlanta Public Art Program. It is 11 feet by 11 feet. A striking piece, I have absolutely no idea why the figure is sitting inside the globe or what the obvious lettering indicates. I couldn't make out any significant words to provide meaning or context. There is no legal parking nearby so if you're visiting, I would suggest doing so on foot or by bicycle. Home of the Atlanta falcon so I'm not sure the ties to soccer but me and my buddies came across this awesome and massive public art sculpture when walking into the stadium before watching out hometown Lousiville cardinals play a football game. Like just about everything at Mercedes Benz stadium this is very extravagant and passes the eyeball test. Cool piece of public art at a really cool stadium.

Located at the entrance of the famed centennial Olympic park in downtown Atlanta. Very popular photo op and a symbol that has become universally known as the Olympics is celebrated everywhere in the world. The entire park features all kinds of callback and tributes to the Olympics held in Atlanta so having the rings was a no brainer I imagine. Overall very cool and fun site and photo op to check out when visiting that very popular portion of the city of Atlanta.
