Very Very interesting place to visit when in town. Extremely informative, the self paced tour is packed with information but would be pretty boring for small children. I was very impressed with every employee/volunteer we encountered as everyone was super friendly and there was also a terrific gift shop and nice place to sit and order a snack or light meal. We are already planning a return trip since we know we didn't see everything there was to see! read more

If you like computers and history, this is a one time must visit nerd out spot. It's lacking in a lot of unique things, but it has everything on the main display of the history of computers from early times to now, with tons of history and devices that are too old for most people to recognize. Wish they had some more up to date future stuff (they did with Google driving cars, Google maps, etc, but not quite super high tech). Still worth visiting if you're visiting Google/Facebook for example nearby. read more

I came here during the Christmas holiday at the request of relatives who were in town. They wanted to check out the museum considering so much computer history is from the nearby area. It's funny when relatives from Washington who work at Microsoft are in awe of the history at the museum here! With lots of parking and not a lot of people, we didn't feel rushed or cramped. The self-guided "tour" starts with early counting machines and punch card machines from the 20s-30s, which are amazing to see. It continues to early "computers" onto more modern technology. Seeing how big old hard drives were and how little storage they held is amazing when you think how far technology has come. In only my early 20s, a lot of the material here is well before my time but it's interesting to see "old" Playstation & Nintendo 64s on display in the video game section. My cousins were particularly interested in the display of the Intel CPUs that were on display. I got a kick out of the "old" iPod and iPhones on display which are only from 2006-2007 yet look almost ancient! I sort of wish they had a section for Apple considering how big they are and since they are from the area. The gift shop and cafe are nice additions to stop by after a tour and browse. The gift shop had lots of little souvenirs related to the computer industry and the like. Nothing was overly pricey and there were plenty of small dollar items to purchase to have. Overall it was a nice experience, especially if you are or go with someone who has some knowledge of the industry. My uncle was one of the first employees at Apple long ago and was super excited to walk around and explain the old tech to us. If you have someone who hasn't been here that enjoys computers, this is the place to take them! read more

I got a Groupon for 2 admissions and T-shirts. Ample parking on site, which is a nice surprise! The visitors are mostly adults who look like engineers. However, the exhibits are easy to understand and educational even for a non-engineer like myself. I saw some young kids (school agers) and they looked bored UNTIL they hit the game computing area where they could play games. Overall a very good museum. If you want to learn about the history of computer, you would enjoy this museum. read more

Excellent exhibit of DEC PDP1 computer, exhibit of IBM 1401 computer, and Babbage Analytic Engine. IBM Card punchers, sorter, reader and 1403 impact printer. Several exhibits of old pc, video games, and mini computers. For old timers, it brings back memories of a time pass. Many of the hardwares and technologies one can identify with because they were within our lifetime. Free parking is a plus. Cloud Cafe had drinks, snacks, pannini sandwiches. Tip: better to eat outside of museum. I liked computer museum. None better than except maybe the Munich Technical Museum. read more

Took my grandson to see the Computer History Museum in Mountain View today. I found it a very welcome review and refreshing in that much of what I lived was covered very nicely. A number of exhibits explaining and detailing the contributions CDC, my former employer, made to the development and propagation of the Science. Including details of the accomplishments of Seymour Cray, a G-15, a 160-A, the first 6600, Sn#8 of Cray-1, along with the details of the IBM lawsuit by CDC and the Justice Department. Lots of info on all aspects of computer development, a working copy of the Babbage Difference Machine (with daily demo), exhibits on the early Sage, NTDS and ENIAC systems and systems by SDS, DEC and many more. Of course whole sections on software, PCs, and more modern innovations. Warning, it is best enjoyed by those who lived thru some of it or the serious computer techie.. If you take anyone not so inclined you may feel like you are holding back someone who would be better occupied by the Children's Discovery Museum. read more

I was really impressed at the range and detail of these artifacts and exhibits. From the earliest computing devices like the abacus and the slide rule to the most modern computers, there are great examples of how the tools and the people who used them brought us to where we are today. The demonstration of the Babbage difference engine was extremely impressive-- a device never completed that functioned perfectly when it was finally built hundreds of years after it was imagined. I would wholeheartedly recommend this museum to anyone interested in the history of technology. read more

Nerd alert! I think this museum is fairly new? I saw the Groupon deal for 6 tickets is $35. I think we had a 20% off groupon code too. Otherwise regular adult admission is $15 each. Kids 12 years and younger are free. The lady at the info counter was so nice and welcoming! We had bought too many tickets because my brother couldn't make it last min and my other brother is actually free admission. Without me having to ask, she said I'm going to give you guys two free tickets to come back since you paid for two extra with the deal. That's so nice!! I thought I would have to eat the cost. Tour (50 min) - the tour was split to two groups due to size. We were lucky to get Paul (I think his name?). He worked at IBM and got hired by Apple as a contractor to write their operating system. He met Steve Wozniak. Later he worked for Atari. So his credibility and experience is crazy. The tour takes you through the evolution of computers exhibit (R|Evolution). But the tour is kinda dry at times. It would've been nice to see more of the newer stuff were familiar with. He kinda only focused on the earlier stages of computers and it seemed he ran out of time. Babbage machine viewing (1 hr plus) - this was said to be highly recommended to see. But it was super crowded to even see. I can't believe the presentation took about an hour when what I feel should only take 30 min max. It's a long time for ppl to be standing. But it is cool to see the machine in action and hear the neat history and stories behind it. Check out the Google self driving car, re walk through the history of computers exhibit at your own pace. Cool to see some of the old video game consoles and cell phones. Nice to see things you own are a part of history here. Besides having a few cons..this museum is a must see! Especially when you're in the heart of Silicon Valley. read more

Had a great time here last weekend. We were just in time to catch the demo of the Babbage Difference Engine in action. Simply amazing, we'd still be using books of tables if it weren't for Babbage! The museum starts with slide rules and abacuses, and ends with personal computers, and handheld devices. Throw in some punchcard machines, DEC PDPs, video game consoles, workstations, supercomputers, and Palm Pilots to the mix. My personal favorites were the CRAY, Connection Machine, Alto, Macintosh, Lisa, Apple II, and the NeXT cube. Incredible machines from incredible minds. I came away with a much deeper appreciation for computers, and how lucky we are to have computers that are affordable, powerful, and portable. I'm still amazed by how large and mechanistic computers used to be, and the very industrial smell they had. I'd be afraid to operate those machines for fear of starting a fire or getting electrocuted! If you love computers, and are OBSESSED with computers, you need to come here! read more

Really cool museum. Spent close to 2.5 hours wandering the exhibits. Loved the exhibits on calculators, punch cards, computer graphics and video games. Lots of parking available for guests. read more

If you are at all interested in computers and technology this is a museum you should visit. It's small enough that you can do it in a few hours, but detailed enough that you really can see a complete view of the course of computer technology. It starts simple with an abacus, and then scales up to the giant computers of old that were business/government only, and ends in the modern age. Gamers will get a kick out of seeing the video game section (I didn't feel bad that I could identify all of the consoles based on where I first played them) and the robots/toys are interesting too. It's geeky, but not too geeky. You can do it at your own pace, and it's very family friendly. Given how predominant computers are in our lives, this place is filled with things you should know about even if you currently don't. I will say that it's not expansive enough to justify a trip out to the area just to visit the museum, but if you are here for any reason, it's worth the stop for sure. read more

I had so much fun here! I couldn't wait to share many of the cool things I learned, and definitely want to go back to see more. I didn't even get to the game area before I had to leave! Imagine my devastation. It is a little dry for younger ones, but for teens and up (and the appropriately precocious youngster), it is a wealth of interesting information on computers from primitive accounting tools to current day. For all the techies or tech inspired, I profoundly suggest a visit. read more

Amazing museum. This is a must for anyone of any age. So much to learn and do. Even kids there is a video game area and other interesting hands on technology. My favorite exhibits were the processors, video games/consoles, and the google self driving car. So much great information! Very friendly staff as well! read more

It's a nice museum. Very clean. I can see how this can be a geek's heaven. We walked in and the people who worked the ticket counter was very nice and welcoming. We went on a Sunday. I traveled with 2 small kids, but ultimately it's not for them. It was cool at first but they got bored after the display of kids computer toys. That was their highlight of this trip. We stayed for the Babbage Computer Demonstration and despite all the rave reviews on Yelp, the guy (who has a huge chip on his shoulder) did a long boring demo on what the Babbage Machine was but yet never fully explained what the machine did. The computer video presentation inside the museum did a much better job explaining what the Babbage Analytical Machine did. Husband videoed the presentation while I took the kids to walk thru the museum because everyone else was watching the presentation. It worked out great for us because the museum was practically empty at that point. The crowd here is very different than the one at the California Science Academy. Lots of men of all ages. Not that it's a bad thing but the vibe just wasn't for me. Too many stink-eyes from those men. Lots of them also have the big ego chip on their shoulders. It makes the entire experience uncomfortable. I often catch those men staring at other Asian women and when I see them staring at me they give me the stink eye and look away. I feel like Mulan when people discover she's a woman. Those same people also ignore picture taking and just walk right into a photo. No courtesy. For the price, it's definitely worth it. It has A LOT of information on computer history. I liked the WATSON (from Jeopardy) display, the ENIAC, UNIVAC, etc. It's nice to actually see those first computers in person to really understand the SIZE of those machines. However it's not a place I would return. Even my happy 4 year old daughter who normally loves museums was very excited to visit this place ... but even she completely lost her enthusiasm after 2 hours and said, "Let's go, I'm done with here." But her enthusiasm returned when we took her to the gift shop. read more

This review is for the Museum as an EVENT VENUE. For the cost of the place for 1.5 days, I would say that they really don't give you a lot to work with. It CAN be a very beautiful space, and I like that there were two catering kitchens by each auditorium which allowed us to do a lot, but there were a number of very mixed experiences working with them: VENUE SPACE -- The location is super convenient to get to, but the Museum DID NOT DISCLOSE that there were competing events to ours on the days of our booking, and still charged us full price for using their space -- THAT THEY HAD RENTED OUT TO ANOTHER GROUP! Out of their 400 parking spots, they had half of this completely unavailable on our busiest day because there was another event going on that day -- directly in the parking lot space. So, A+ for location, but F for communication (and they really ought to give us a discount for not having parking available when we booked their entire second floor). A/V SUPPORT - The venue did not allow anyone other than the CHM's designated vendor to utilize any of this equipment. Because the vendor had a last-minute personal conflict that only came up 2 weeks before the event (and which would not have been avoidable even if we had booked this vendor far in advance), we were entirely unable to utilize *any* of the equipment for reasons beyond our control. Total F. FURNITURE - the CHM did not had access to sufficient tables and chairs for their spaces. We rented their 400 and 500 person space (total of 900), but they only had 500 chairs total and did not provide table dressings for the tables. We had to source our own tablecloths. That said, their setup was done quickly and professionally, so rating it as a "B-" for lack of equipment but good service. GENERAL SUPPORT -- There was no easy "venue information package" containing all of the basic information for the venue, such as measurement maps of the spaces, vendor information, etc. All information had to be individually asked for -- if we knew to ask for it. So, be warned, the CHM is *very* hard to communicate with if you don't have everything you want upfront. "C" for lack of any effort. JANITORIAL -- cleanup was one of the few things that the CHM did provide, and they didn't provide enough! We had garbage bins that were FULL and our event manager went around with one of our volunteers clearing out the garbage cans ourselves! Since trash can were not set by us but by the museum based on the maps we gave them for where our food and traffic would be, this is a "D" job in my opinion, with the responsibility on them. SECURITY - The venue itself only provided 1 security guard from 8am-12pm on the first day of the event. This was not enough considering the various entries and exits of the venue and that they had their museum customers going in and out during our event days and they wouldn't provide anyone to check and manage the flow of people between their downstairs and our upstairs. C- for security management. read more

My husband is a techie programming geek and I love him, so I brought him here one weekend as a surprise. We planned to spend a few hours and ended up having to be shooed out as they closed! It's a good museum. The admission isn't really reasonable if you're not into this sort of thing- we paid about $25 for his "geek package" including pin and T shirt (zeros and ones, he loves it) and $10 for me just to go in. We had a great afternoon walking around, this stuff is really interesting if you care about computer science and/or modern history. Bottom line, if you're a geek go early, spend the whole day, you will love it! If you're not a geek (or love one), don't even think about it! read more

I have an MS in mechanical engineering but I still thought this museum was overwhelming. It's really well organized and there's an extreme wealth of information with each of the displays, but I kind of wish it was dumbed down more so I could actually understand what was going on. If you were really commited though, and read all the boards thoroughly, you'd be ready for any kind of old school trivial pursuit! Tickets aren't expensive so I'd definitely recommend it as a place to go. Probably not kid-friendly unless you've got a crazy nerdy kid and you already know enough to explain all the different computing machines to them. read more

I came here for the tech for school summit on Saturday. I love that the venue has free parking and plenty of it. We were on the second floor and the staff was amazing! Making sure the food was put out and drinks were always handy. The auditorium and the grand hall was a great size. Everything was clean and orderly. Especially the bathroom. The only thing that made me a little sad was not to be able to explore the museum. Participants of the summit had to pay $9, which is much cheaper than the original price but I thought since we were there for the summit we should be allowed to walk around the museum too. Oh wells, I guess next time I'll have to come back and visit the museum :) read more

I was here for a meeting that took place in one of their upstairs conference rooms. After the meeting, I got to tour the museum. They are located in the old Silicon Graphics building. They are open 10AM-5PM Wed-Sun and the general admission is $15. I didn't have a lot of time to explore the museum and could have easily spent many hours browsing through all of their exhibits, which are divided by themes not chronological order. The old calculators are amazingly ingenious. While wandering around I felt alternately nostalgic or very old - remembering some of the computers and toys from when I was a kid or seeing the old computers (Cray supercomputer, NeXT, LISA, etc.) that I used as a student. I will definitely need to come again and take my time going through their entire collection. read more

One of the coolest things in the bay area to visit. It is in the water around the bay, but being able to see the rise of the computer at every stage was not only wonderfully nostalgic, but also very informative. I also really enjoyed the Google driverless car exhibit - the future is here! read more

I hardly ever rate non-food/drink places, but I just have to for the Computer History Museum - it was super cool. The staff was super friendly, from the person at the desk you're buying your ticket from to the people hosting the demos in one of the side rooms. Everyone seemed excited and invested in the museum. As for the displays, the museum is set up such that it's a walk through time and I think they executed it well. A lot of artifacts and interactive displays such that you can try to learn what the machine is supposed to do. I was hesitant to pay the $15 entry fee at first, but its well worth it! Go! read more

Wow. Gorgeous, gorgeous museum (thanks Bill Gates!). I feel like a brainier person having visited it, although many of the things on display completely baffled me (but fascinated me all the same!). Some incredible stuff to be seen and enjoyed here. Love how they had a special exhibit on the famous "Watson", and it's always amusing to take a glimpse at the days of video games past- to name a few highlights. The gift shop is also a can't miss. read more

I had planned to go to Alcatraz over President's Day holiday, but tickets were sold out. I had two tweens with me, ages 11 and 12. I personally wanted to go the Computer History Museum to see what used to be new to me (giant floppy disks anyone?) and explain to the boys how everything they have is so much more advanced. The museum meets these expectations, however, the biggest problem with the museum is its lack of interactivity. Kids need to have hands on experiences to enjoy a museum and, short of playing pong or three other games in the early video game section, there is nothing for kids to touch. The museum will emphasize it is a "history" museum, so no obligation to provide interactivity. However, they should amend their mission to make history "come alive." The museum did not interest my kids much, except for the video game area. I would not recommend visiting unless your kids are over 16 and/or like to read, watch, and listen, but not touch. My kids enjoyed visiting Google's HQ up the street from the museum much more. They ran around and even rode Google's bikes (they are not locked and it was a weekend where other tourists were riding them) around the place. Within about ten minutes, however, Google security came by and said that doing so was not allowed. Too bad Google does not offer tours of its facility! read more

Perfect place to geek out. From hand calculations to super computers, this museum walks you through a pretty comprehensive history of computing and how it has evolved and developed over the years. While I loved the content, I think there's some improvements to be made for a better experience. First off, there is a lack of explanation around technical terms. I can see people with a nontechnical background having difficulties understanding all the concepts that were being explained. I had to google some things along the way, even with a technical background. Additionally, the organization of exhibits/timeline is confusing to follow, and the arrows aren't always clear. Overall, worth a visit..just once maybe. read more

My college age son and I visited, while driving through Silicon Valley. We're both EEs with a computer bent, only a good 37 years apart. Anyway, it was awesome to see some of the classic systems they had on display, such as an ENIAC, differential analyzer, IBM 360, Cray-1, and a connection machine. While I'd see a number in the past, it was great to see a LINC on display and it's descendent, a PDP-8/e (the first computer I programmed in 1974). An Apple 1, Commodore 64, and even a "trash-80." The highlight for me was seeing a wafer of processors that I worked on while at HP! I've got a design in a museum. How cool is that? My only problem is that I wanted to play with toys on display. When was the last time you got to rewire an analog computer? Or toggle in a boot loader on a PDP-11? Obviously, they can't allow that, but I can imagine days gone by. If you are interested at all in computers and where they have come from, this the Computer History Museum is well worth a visit. Those who know some of the history will love seeing some of the real systems again. Those who want to learn will be able to take in the history and gain a better appreciation for the evolution of the computer. read more

BF and I spent a whole day here, it was fantastic except that we both got FOOD POISONING from the panini at Cafe Cloud, would advise to pack your own lunch. Otherwise, the museum is a lot of fun. The babbage engine! It works! Amazing. Like the rest of the museum. It's really neat to see the history of computing, considering how near-time history it all is. Great displays and information. I've wanted to go here for a while, but never got around to it...until I went here for the Yelp Summer Bash (which was awesome!). I took some time to check out the exhibits before mingling with people. I'm a self-proclaimed geek, so I enjoyed everything, even though much of it was WAY before my time! It's AMAZING how fast technology changes in just several years, much less decades. I got to see a little tour of this PDP (I think that's what it's called) and saw the first videogame...a game of space invaders/asteroids. The tour guides let some people try playing it, and it was hilarious because they'd cheer "YEAAAAHHHH!!!!" whenever they hit an asteroid and blew it up. "Looks like we've got some gamers here...did people in the 60s make the same sounds when they won?" Other things of interest were the history of Apple and Steve Jobs, and slide rules. I don't even know what slide rules are...-_- read more

TONS of information. Displays were aesthetically pleasing, but I dislike the lack of chronology in parts of the exhibit. Being a person who likes to fill in the gaps and know the why and the how, I had to accept big chunks of that information were missing, but they could have at least kept things chronological in the order they were created to see the evolution. Saw the demo of the Babbage engine. Cool, pretty well presented although I couldn't grasp all of it. Didn't care for the volunteer's condescending joke about females and math when talking to my mom after the demo. People told us it would take like 2 hours to go through, but we only got really 1/4 of the way through in an hour and a half (my dad was reminiscing, and my mom loves to read everything, we're a thorough bunch). Skimmed pretty quick the other 3/4 of the way, so will probably be going back at some point for more, because the 4 hours we were there was definitely not enough for us to see everything. It's not clear what "Super Geek Package" and "Total Geek Package" are and why they're more expensive than general admission. The food from the cafe smelled good. They have an espresso machine. Not sure how it was supposed to taste, but the caffeine really helped, darn DST change. read more

I went here a couple weeks ago for a private Motorola Mobility event where they showcased their newest product lines and had a keynote speech given by the VP of Product Management about how the company has changed and grown over the years and what they plan to do next. At the forefront of the product demos were the Atrix 4G and the Xoom. They had appetizers and refreshments available and as always some were better than others. The Motorola Xoom I had used once before, and I was again disappointed with the low touch sensitivity of the on screen buttons and screen glare. Not sure if this can be adjusted but since they were first to market on this Honeycomb based tablet, there may be some issues to work out. I'm still looking forward to the release of the Samsung 8.9 Galaxy Tab, as it maybe a better tablet. I'd have to say that the Museum had a modern atmosphere that fit the event well, too bad I didn't have a chance to actually see much of the Museum exhibits are they seemed mostly closed at the time. I should come back here if I'm in the area and actually go through the exhibit experience. Then I can actually write a review about the Museum itself and not the Motorola event. read more

Came here with my friend as we are both very interested in technology. The museum is $15 for general visitors, and $12 for students. I really enjoyed the exhibits and the 'blast from the past'. My favorite exhibits included: Memory and Storage: The huge HDD with 30+ platters Gaming: Glad MUDs were represented Digital vs. Analog computing Personal Computing history (major nostalgia from my elementary school days) Being able to see Moore's law into actual effect -- transistors (vacuum tubes loL) in a huge room (probably running at a few Kilohertz), to thousands, to millions, to A BILLION transistors running 1+ GHz on a quad core small chip modern day. I am still in awe how they fit all that stuff on there. For anybody who lives in the Silicon Valley, it is a must-see to come visit the CHM. read more

Walking through the Computer History Museum with my dad, who has worked with computers since he was in high school in the 70s, was an amazing bonding experience. He was like a kid in a candy store telling me tales of punch cards and all the pranks he used to pull on other programmers! It's easy to spend a great deal of time there, so I'm sure to be back. The fact that it's open late on Fridays and food trucks are present then makes it even better! My only critique- as someone without much prior knowledge of computer history or computer science, I felt like some additional exposition or introductory/basic information (what is the difference between analog and digital? What was the original purpose of a punch card system, in terms of output?) would have been really helpful in processing all of the amazing artifacts. read more

CHM is a great place to host an event. Our non-profit had our biggest annual conference (about 400 attendees) held at CHM last year and this year, and they were smash hits! People really loved the venue and we've heard a lot of compliments on the venue selection. It's conveniently located just outside 101 and have ample parking space, just steps away from the main entrance. Its modern architecture and layout adds slick touch on your event. The staffs are also very professional and helpful. Valerie helped us throughout the process and she was very attentive and professional, handling all our needs and ever changing requests very well; We're all volunteers - none had experiences in such a big event. Two thumbs up to Albert who maliciously took care off all the AV and stage settings, and our complicated requests on the presentation and band performance. I got a Groupon to go here and was so glad I did. This is the perfect place for a Sunday afternoon date. I was a little worried about how small the museum was after being spoiled in D.C. but worry not, this place is packed with exhibits. I always start off very motivated and thinking I'm going to read all the placards and learn ALL THE THINGS. Half way through I'm tired, my feet hurt and I need to eat. But power through it we did. I loved the interactive exhibits they have-there's a learn to program game that I was just getting into when they unfortunately had to turn off the lights because, I guess, the staff wanted to go home at closing time. There's so much to touch and learn from here. It's great for all ages even for people not in the tech field. You will find something that will interest you. Technology really touches everyone in some way and it's really amazing how far we've advanced. For all you Tesla owners, the charging station is right next to this museum so it's a great place to stop on a road trip. There's a cafeteria inside and restaurants in walking distance. read more

I'm actually not a techie at all. Sure, I use computers, smartphones and ipods in my daily life, but I don't get a high from electronics. That said, I saw some pretty amazing stuff at this museum. Technology has an amazing history and this place presents it in a way that I think many people can understand. It's extraordinary to think how our lives, our culture, our government, our world has been affected by it for soooo long! Very well curated for all types of audiences. I loved the gaming and art exhibit. They had "Speak and Spell" on display! The short documentary on programming was very informative for a computer "dummy" like me. Very friendly staff and volunteers. The museum store is also very fun to peruse through. An enjoyable experience. read more

Ever been to a museum and think "this history stuff is really cool and interesting, but how is this relevant to me?" Or if you're like my hubby, "this stuff is really boring and I can't believe my wife dragged me to another museum?" This is not that type of museum; i.e. hubby didn't spend most of his time sitting down on a bench twiddling his thumbs. For those of us who grew up in the information age (pretty much everyone on Yelp), this museum explains how all the technology that we use today came to be from hundreds of years BC to the current age. The videos are interesting and not excessively long. The docent lead tour is a great way to hear some interesting stories beyond what is on the plaques. The only downside was that the museum is a bit confusing to navigate as several people seemed to be confused about where the exit was. read more
