I used to really love coming here to camp. I've been camping here for over 40 years. However, our…read morelast 2 stays but most especially this one is ridiculous. The amount of lack of consideration for fellow campers is horrendous. There is no one on site to call to ask for reinforcements of the rules. It's currently midnight and I hear people singing across the park. Our neighbors have finally gone to bed or moved to another campsite. The speed of golf carts and those of little kids driving them is crazy. This is a great place if you want to party but if you are looking for quiet peaceful decompression DON'T come here. You'll be even more stressed out.

This is a small park located on the way to the Alexandria Airport. There is not much parking…read moreavailable, but there are a few sports nearby that is shared by the adjacent buildings and baseball field where you can park. The park is well maintained and has five aircraft don display that contributed to the defense of our country. They all have the appearance that they are flying. You can even see the pilots. Each plane was said to be operated from the old England AFB and they each have placards that identify them and explain their significance. Some of the aircraft on display include the Republic F-84F Thunderstreak, the North American F-86 Sabre, the Republic F-105 Thunderchief, the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II and the LTV Aerospace Vought A-7D Corsair II The park has a small water fountain/waterfall and some flag poles. The planes and poles are well illuminated at night. This is a nice park, but I do not see spending much time here or making it a destination stop. It would surely make a nice stop if you are on your way to the airport and have a few extra minutes to check it out.

This is a super…read moreclean and newly renovated park that is conveniently located across the street from the Courthouse and Police Department. It also backs up to a very bad part of town which really concerned me. But on a sunny Thursday in August at 1pm it felt safe, was pretty empty and relatively clean (except for some food trash). They have tandem mother/baby swings, a handicap swing, a large play set safe for an able-bodied 3 year old and lots of grass. I would visit again! The pool was surrounded by a chainlink fence and staffed with a lifeguard. Just a few children getting their swimming lessons.

The National Park Service (NPS) webmaster or whatever they are called these days needs to make this link more relevant and easier to find as they have done for other parks' main pages: https://www.nps.gov/cari/planyourvisit/oakland-cell-phone-tour.htm So it's a very simplistic "virtual tour." In actuality, it's a cell phone tour with a few photos of the buildings and landmarks that narrators describe as you would if you visited Cane River Creole NHP in the flesh with a map to guide you. Guided tours with an NPS staff member are also available when a pandemic hasn't plagued our great country. Their schedule is a bit lengthy to repost, so I suggest you call or visit their website ahead of time. The park encompasses two former plantations, Oakland and Magnolia, that are spread out near the Cane River in Louisiana. What was left behind pales in comparison to what the plantations must have looked like so long. The Creole people were extraordinarily clever at using their natural habitat to survive. Overall, I enjoyed learning about the history of this beautiful, live oak-lined area... especially "bousillage" (a mix of mud, Spanish moss, and/or animal hair used in architecture), the Pigeonniers, the Bottle Gardens, the Punkah fan, and the Overseer's house. TIPS - the Magnolia main house is still owned by the 7th generation of the LeCompte family and is not part of the park, thus, is off-limits to the public + the Oakland main house is guided tours only

I stopped by this national park site on a road trip. The entrance was a gravel road that wasn't the…read moremost obvious. The small farm was not a happening place, with not a soul in sight on the day I visited. An enclosure was playing some video content that came on without warning in the way that a horror movie would do trying for a cheap jump scare. There were several buildings, but none were open. There are tours, but they are at very limited times, and just walking the grounds didn't offer much. There is some interesting history to be discovered, but without the tour it isn't anything impressive. This was not a working farm kind of exhibit, with no actual animals and not a ton of meaningful exhibits. It's nice that the site is preserved, and maybe if you visit at the right time there's more to get out of it. However, I do recall when I was last in Shreveport I considered an hour road trip both ways to see this place, and I'm quite glad that I didn't.
