Living in NYC, where walking is a way of life, I felt crushed, fearing my mobility would continue to decline. I desperately tried various over-the-counter shoe inserts from brands like Sof Sole, Orthofeet, and Birkenstock, but none offered any relief. I consulted a podiatrist, and X-rays revealed bone spurs on both my left and right heels (though only the left was symptomatic at the time). My podiatrist explained that there wasn't a definitive cure for bone spurs; instead, the focus was on pain reduction to enable a normal life. She strongly recommended I visit "the best Certified Pedorthist in NYC," Spencer Weisbond (her exact words), for custom-made orthotics. At that point, I was willing to try anything for even a slight reduction in pain, so I promptly scheduled an appointment. My experience at Orthotic Solutions was excellent from the start. Spencer made the molding process easy and comfortable while he explained everything thoroughly and efficiently. A few weeks later, I returned to pick up my custom orthotics. Spencer trimmed them to fit the shoes I brought and provided instructions on their care. My hope was that they would at least ease the pain enough for me to walk short distances around the city. What happened, however, was far more profound. In just a few weeks of always using my custom orthotics, the pain in my left heel had completely disappeared. That was two years ago, and I remain entirely pain-free when using my custom orthotics. Occasionally, if I walk for extended periods without them or go barefoot, I can feel a hint of pain starting to return, reminding me that the bone spurs are still present. But the custom orthotics properly distributes the pressure on my feet, allowing me to walk without pain. Lovely, he took his time talking to me and explaining things. He did not rush, which I find to be one of the most annoying things at doctors office. He was thorough and listened to my concerns. X-rays were taken immediately there, results and next steps all within 15 minutes. I was actually out of the office before my actual appointment time. Sweet deal! The waiting room was on the smaller side and clean at the Bellemore location.

My brother who is in rehab, was fitted for a prosthetic that he was told he would have ONE month…read moreago. He was excited, looking forward to being able to walk again. He was told it would be there on a Monday, and when my brother saw the Prosthetist on a Wednesday and asked where his prosthetic was, he was told it was an insurance thing, they hadn't received paperwork from the doctor. We immediately called the doctor's office, who informed us they sent it. I also personally handed in copies to the nurses desk at rehab, who in turn gave it to PT/OT. My brother was given a business card, which is useless, the email address no longer exists, if you call the number it goes to an answering service. It is impossible to speak with the Prosthetist, or Mark Goldberg himself. Now we see all the poor reviews, they do not follow through with the insurance company, they did not contact my brother to let him know if there were issues and now he's going home disappointed, without a prosthetic. Don't do business with them! Horrible!

When we arrived, we were fortunate to meet Raul again. He had helped my niece before, and once again he was so patient, helpful, and friendly. He really knows his products and immediately understood the type of rocker shoe I was looking for. He took his time with us, answered all our questions, and made sure I felt comfortable with the choices. Raul was just as attentive and helpful with my niece as well, which we truly appreciated. After not walking for the past six years, Erik Schaffer had me up and walking within 2 hours of entering his facility. Thats's the short version for those of you that don't like to read :-) For the folks that want to I understand why I am such a strong supporter of a Step Ahead, here is more of the story. I was to arrive this morning - August 30, 2021, at 7:30 am. When I did, Erik Schaffer, the President, was waiting to greet me with an open door. Amy Palmiero-Winters, the Director of Operations, herself an amputee, (also recently named a Guinness World Record holder for being the fastest woman to run 100 miles on a treadmill) was there to hug me. Because, even though we never met, it felt as if we were somehow connected. It was like walking in and seeing an old friend. There were so many times over the past two years that I was ready to surrender to life in a wheelchair. I was done fighting. I had given up hope. But, every time I would get to that place, it seemed Amy somehow knew, and I would get a call or an email with an update letting me know that the battle was still going on, and they were determined to get me the leg I needed. There are no words to describe what today was like for me, and none of it would have been possible without A Step Ahead. When I went through the facility this morning, every person I met, from office staff to billing folks to the prosthetists in the amazing onsite lab, knew who I was. I was pretty amazed. Apparently, they all knew it because when they have a tough case, they all rally to make sure the patient wins. They don't walk away and take the easy wins, which I what other places do. A Step Ahead makes a commitment to their patients, and they fight until they win. I can only imagine the countless hours that they spent on calls, and writing letters and gathering records, and more calls - none of which they are paid for. They don't get to charge extra because the insurance company was terrible to deal with. Who does that in today's world? The only company I can tell you for sure that does is A Step Ahead. It may sound corny or even unbelievable, but they fight for what is right regardless of the level of effort involved. Of course, I wouldn't wish my journey on anyone, but the good news is if you just go to these guys first, you likely won't have to endure it. The thing is that this submission and approval was actually the very first time that A Step Ahead got to submit a clean request that wasn't bound by other factors from previous attempts by other providers - and it came back in less than 3 weeks fully approved. These people are the real deal. Take it from someone who has really paid the price for just taking whoever walked into my room at the hospital and taking a quick look at the insurance website to make sure they were in-network. I never thought about being an amputee - I didn't know what I didn't know. After today and putting on the prosthetic they are building for me at A Step Ahead, I am realizing what I didn't know. To say the difference is night and day doesn't do the situation justice. Erik Schaffer and his team are, BAR NONE, IMO THE BEST!! I may not have been to all of the competition, but I have worn something I shouldn't have worn, and now I am being put into something I should. So, the company that made that happen, and made it happen regardless of the hurdles they had to jump through to do it, is going to get my vote every time.

Through my insurance company I would also get two new liners a year, at no extra cost. Then, this year, A Step Ahead wanted to charge me $2300 for these 2 liners and wouldn't explain to change in policy (there was no change in my health insurance provider either). I ended up going to a different company and now have my two new liners at no extra cost. In summary, A Step Ahead make fantastic legs and provide great support but be wary of pricing and don't be afraid to shop around.

(516)678-3659 {Kate & Marie Ellen} worked together and with Devika also helping by sending my Dr's note from Orthopedic Doctor Dr. William B. Walsh to Hanger Clinic within 30mins. The process now with them got started. Tech: Jimmy was very patient and helpful helping on the x-ray bed. Newbie Cindy. All were awesome, friendly and professional. They did some renovations to the office that laminates the space with brightness and a large great colorful art piece behind the front desk. All smiles, welcoming and such a great vibes always.
