I don't want to discount the fact that other patients have experienced relief from seeing Jim Otis,…read morebut I want to write candidly about my experience during intake, and warn vulnerable patients against seeing this person for services. 1. During intake, Jim Otis performed a series of 'tests' to evaluate symptoms of my concussion. He mostly compared the strength in my left and right arms, noting "significant differences" between the two sides. He returned to this eval multiple times during intake: we performed this sitting, standing, and lying down, multiple times. As he "tested" the strength between my two arms, he muttered about how significant it was. The problem is, he clearly varied pressure applied to my limbs. Sometimes he applied more resistance on one side than the other, sometimes he didn't. I can't even venture to call this evaluation technique pseudoscience; a more appropriate term would be gaslighting. Jim muttered things like "very weak" and "noticeable difference" as he grunted and feigned significant struggle to resist my arm motion. At some point he said, "There isn't actually a difference in strength between your arms, it's your brain telling your arm it is fatigued." I liken his game of pretend to what I imagine seeing a psychic is like. It's mind games, and frankly very disturbing that this man calls himself a doctor. To vet my suspicions about whether or not there was a significant, noticeable difference in arm strength, as Jim had implied, I returned home and instructed my roommate to perform the same basic test that he did, and sure enough there were no noticeable differences between my arms. 2. He asked that I sign a consent form for treatment prior to describing a treatment plan. He recommended 10 sessions, starting out 3 times per week, at $150 per session. 3. He said that during our next visit he would prescribe supplements that would cost about $150 per month. If this was a real doctor, he would be concerned about not delaying treatment for a serious brain injury. This is not a good level of care for anyone, especially one with a brain injury. Overall, it's a shame that Jim Otis is preying on vulnerable populations-- people with brain injuries-- in order to make profit. His evaluatory techniques are pseudoscientific, predatory, and the dangerous to vulnerable populations. My advice for anyone with a brain injury: see a real doctor, get sleep, take vitamins. Protect yourself and save your money by not seeing Jim Otis.

Here's a letter I wrote about a year ago to John, the Chief Administrator at ATMC, reflecting on my experience there when I was 18: It's been almost 5 years since I had the pleasure of knowing you and traveling to the most magical place I have ever been, ATMC. I think about you, the time I spent here, and all the incredible connections I made often. John, in my mind you were like a superhero to me, one of the greatest, most compassionate people I have ever met. I tell the story about when we were up all night drinking raw eggs after we went to the gym and church to so many people. You genuinely were my hero that night, and I want you to know the impact yourself and ATMC had on me is something I can't even put into words. Your advice and comfort from that night will never leave me. You were sitting with me early in the morning in Dr. Libby's office. As we waited for the sun to rise, you said some words along the lines of, "Just learning to relax and not overthink things." In my anxiety-ridden, overthinking, hypo-manic state, it was exactly what I needed to hear, and in that moment I could see my adult life unfolding. We did a speech last year in my public speaking class, and the theme was one great moment from our lives. I told the story of this moment. In that moment it felt as if it was a portal from my life as a kid, to my life as an adult. Surviving that night, sitting with a man I not only admired, but deeply trusted, he spoke simple words that I would carry with me for the rest of my life. In that moment I was no longer a scared kid, I was a man. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the ways you helped me and all the possibilities ATMC showed me. 5 years ago, I found my soul here in Sedona, and I want to come back someday. I started studying psychology last year at our junior college before taking a break to travel. I have so much knowledge and insight from lived experience. I know about mania, dissociation, and I know first hand how incredible it is to live this med free life. This is a letter I've been wanting to write for a while, just to tell you how grateful I am. From the staff to the food to their detox and naturopathic programs - it is all put in place for the patients to succeed and to give them an atmosphere to land on their feet, feel good in their body and take back their power. They have awesome group outings at least once a day, a beautiful big outdoor space (grass, pool, basketball court, gardens), they have art and music to access at all times. You'll meet local healers and you're being helped by other experienced humans who may know just what you're going through and how to navigate that realistically and healthy. Humaning can be a bit much and it affects us all differently especially as we transition and progress in our journey. ATMC was totally necessary for me on so many different levels, main one I believe was it distanced me from systems and relationships (people, substances, places) and gave me new routine, perspective and community. I encourage that if you have found ATMC to trust intuition and go for this opportunity! Sometimes we need to step back to go further. Healing is not linear and it takes time. I am 55 yrs old, battled with weight (and bad eating habits) most of my life along with committing to a work-out program, and have been suffering through bouts of sleeplessness & menopause for 6-7 years. I tried old and trusted diets & work-out routines but with my recent hormone imbalances, nothing worked. As a matter-of-fact, I gained 10 more pounds over the holidays!!
