The principal is completely ineffectual and not capable of running a school. When we brought our issues to her she pretended she did not know what was going on in the classroom. The teacher continued working after several children were removed from her classroom. This is not a safe school for children.

Our daughter was bullied relentlessly in her first classroom, and the teacher was so detached that he didn't even realize it was happening. I had been worried about her because she wasn't getting ANY works done and was having anxiety attacks on school nights that would often keep her up until past 11 PM, and when we finally figured out the cause, it was like pulling teeth to get the administrators to move her to a different classroom. Once she was moved, things improved for her generally, but I still have enough concerns to cause me to move her to a neighborhood school next year. A lot of the people who work at this school are wonderful, kind, hard working souls and I really don't want to make them feel undervalued. I've heard a few of the teachers are great, but I learned at the State of the School meeting that they have a high teacher turnover rate, as well as a high student turnover rate. The children also seem to face little to no consequences for bad behavior, and as a result I am actually embarrassed to be seen on field trips with them. My daughter went to a Title 1 school before this, and the children were much better behaved and respectful to adults and other children. On our last field trip at this school, I was actually shoved by a boy who was impatient to get off the bus! I did do research on the Montessori model and felt I understood what it entailed. My daughter scored very high on the CogAT and has natural curiosity, so I thought this would be a great place for her. At this point, however, I am concerned that she will actually be behind her peers when she starts the second grade. There was a Gifted and Talented group that met once a week, but they never completed any projects and half the time they wouldn't remember to come get her for the meetings (she was 6 the whole year, and could barely remember what day of the week it was). I thought Montessori students would be encouraged to be kind and caring, but I know of more than one other child that has actually left the school due to bullying. One of the Upper El students even told me that bullying is worse at this school because the kids are "free to get up and bug you whenever they want." I know that Montessori is supposed to be self directed, but I don't see any reason that the teachers should not be clued in to what is happening in the classroom and intervene when it is really necessary.

She started in the summer program and really enjoyed the different activities they had throughout the summer for the kids. For example they took the kids swimming every Wednesday, they would have the reptile house or the butterfly pavilion come in several times with different activities for student learning, And they had many discoveries own learning projects that were hands-on for students. When you look at the facility it is very uniquely designed but it looks really cool and they have a lot of hands on activities even outside like gardens and greenhouses. The Montessori is a community learning program that a lot of people seem to like and appreciate. For family and friends of ours that work here it seems like a great school with great employment opportunities as well as learning opportunities for students. They started the school just with the little ones, at the previous location (where we currently attend,) just behind Edgewater. There is also a Young Children's Community, for the under 3 crowd. A beautiful new campus is being built at this new location (Center Ave,) where we will all transfer in the Fall. Next year (2018/19,) they are accepting students through 4th grade, and each year they will extend through a higher grade level. (It doesn't suck to know we won't need to go through the school selection process all over again for Kindergarten.) When selecting a preschool, I was hesitant about enrolling my child for 5 full days, but it has just been the best for him. I really love the Montessori model, that children drive their own learning by whatever is engaging them most on a particular day, and that the children (even at an older age level,) get to move around the classroom throughout the day; their is no possibility of stagnating. At the Primary level my son attends, 3 through 6 year olds are all in the same classroom, which I think is fantastic; not only can younger ones look up to and learn from bigger kids, but I think the bigger kids can learn leadership in the same respect. The teachers are great: all thoughtful, warm, caring and great with the kids. At this new campus, students will also be able to tend vegetables and grow food for the school, which I love. And among the best things? It is a free open enrollment JeffCo school. As such, anyone, in any school district can apply without it affecting their enrollment or waitlist status at another school. When I first took a tour of the classroom (at the existing campus,) I was sold. I highly recommend you take a tour yourself if you are considering a new school for your child.
