The administration should be fired as they have allowed teachers to verbally abuse and shame…read morechildren. The outcomes are absolutely horrific and Maria Montessori must be rolling in her grave. I would not recommend this school to anyone. Children are mistreated, and they then have long-term emotionally issues to deal with. Run away from this school. The principal is completely ineffectual and not capable of running a school. When we brought our issues to her she pretended she did not know what was going on in the classroom. The teacher continued working after several children were removed from her classroom. This is not a safe school for children.

We were very excited when our child got a spot at this school. Unfortunately, our first and only…read moreyear there wound up being very disappointing and frustrating. Our daughter was bullied relentlessly in her first classroom, and the teacher was so detached that he didn't even realize it was happening. I had been worried about her because she wasn't getting ANY works done and was having anxiety attacks on school nights that would often keep her up until past 11 PM, and when we finally figured out the cause, it was like pulling teeth to get the administrators to move her to a different classroom. Once she was moved, things improved for her generally, but I still have enough concerns to cause me to move her to a neighborhood school next year. A lot of the people who work at this school are wonderful, kind, hard working souls and I really don't want to make them feel undervalued. I've heard a few of the teachers are great, but I learned at the State of the School meeting that they have a high teacher turnover rate, as well as a high student turnover rate. The children also seem to face little to no consequences for bad behavior, and as a result I am actually embarrassed to be seen on field trips with them. My daughter went to a Title 1 school before this, and the children were much better behaved and respectful to adults and other children. On our last field trip at this school, I was actually shoved by a boy who was impatient to get off the bus! I did do research on the Montessori model and felt I understood what it entailed. My daughter scored very high on the CogAT and has natural curiosity, so I thought this would be a great place for her. At this point, however, I am concerned that she will actually be behind her peers when she starts the second grade. There was a Gifted and Talented group that met once a week, but they never completed any projects and half the time they wouldn't remember to come get her for the meetings (she was 6 the whole year, and could barely remember what day of the week it was). I thought Montessori students would be encouraged to be kind and caring, but I know of more than one other child that has actually left the school due to bullying. One of the Upper El students even told me that bullying is worse at this school because the kids are "free to get up and bug you whenever they want." I know that Montessori is supposed to be self directed, but I don't see any reason that the teachers should not be clued in to what is happening in the classroom and intervene when it is really necessary.

Disclaimer: I am writing this review as a nanny who took my three year-old twin boy leiges here…read moreregularly. I was in frequent contact with the administration and teachers, so I have a very good view of this school, despite not being the official Mom. There are four different classrooms, differentiated by age. My guys were in the "Popcorn" class. Their teacher (Ms. Rachelle) was wonderful. A lovely human being who truly cared about the kids, and it was obvious in her interactions with them. the other assistant teachers in their class were also wonderful, caring, nurturing people. The boys really loved their teachers, and felt comfortable in their classroom. Their day was broken into different sections such as math & science, reading, "sensory table", arts & crafts, etc. They were given opportunities to make plenty of choices throughout the day: Would you like to make a craft today, or play at the sensory table? The woman who runs the place, Mary Jean, is also a great lady who puts her whole heart into the business. I can only imagine it is difficult to interact with so many different kids and adults every day, but she goes at it with all guns blazing. She engages with everyone who walks through the door, and knows the names of all the kids. She is a sweet and loving lady, but don't mistake her for a softie. She has a toughness that I know moms can appreciate- she won't take any guff, and she makes sure to keep the place organized, under control, and well-protected. The school has a cute little playground, and a barn with lots of farm animals. During recess, the kids frequently go on tractor rides or pony rides- a very exciting part of their day. They get to take care of and feed animals. Cool stuff. Also worth noting, they had days scheduled where various community professionals visited: dentists, firemen, etc. I am a nanny, and entrusted with the care of kids. I take my job seriously and really care about my kids, and put a lot of love and energy into them. And I can honestly say that the teachers and staff here remind me of myself. It was apparent to me that they care about these kids just as much as I do. Definitely schedule a time to have a look at this school! Oh, and my one negative: that damned parking lot! Oddly-shaped and crowded, cars and kids everywhere. Ugh.

I am the oldest girl of 7 and learned much from helping my mother with my brothers and sisters. I have three children of my own and love kids. I know a great learning environment when I see one and this place is a gem! So happy we found it and that our little princess gets to experience this as her first 'school' experience. She will treasure her time at Happy Valley forever.
