You go to Unlimited Cuts…read more Tucked into what looks like an industrial storage unit in a stretch of mixed-use metal storage buildings with residential and garage doors, this is not the kind of barber shop you stumble onto strolling through a walkable downtown or a pedestrian-friendly mall. It's a destination, and you have to mean it. I came in late on a Monday afternoon -- already a gamble for a barber shop, plenty of which are closed at the start of the week. The door was locked, and when I knocked, the proprietor told me he was closing up. I asked, kindly, if he might still be willing to do a quick bald shave, and he obliged. I'm grateful he did. What I found inside was a charming little community shop with seven chairs, none of them new and none of them matching -- each one vintage, somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred years old. The shop itself has been around since '91, headed toward a 40-year anniversary, which is no small thing for any small business, let alone one that made it through COVID. That kind of longevity is something to be proud of. I was the only patron, which gave us time to talk. He was warm and friendly, born and raised in Greenville, and happy to share his impressions of the place. Sports, weather, barbecue -- the kind of small talk I think younger generations have come to undervalue, treating it like something to be endured rather than enjoyed. But small talk about small things, about the place you grew up, is often what you find yourself missing once it's gone. I want to say his name was Andre, but I'm second-guessing my memory, and if I've gotten it wrong I apologize. Whatever your name is, sir -- thank you for staying open a few extra minutes, and congratulations on a business you've clearly poured your heart into. I'll be back if I get the chance.
