As my other 'arf has a lot of Deaf friends, I enrolled on a course to learn BSL (British Sign Language) so that I wouldn't feel like a total numpty while they all merrily conversed away with me just standing there feeling a bit daft. I don't know how often they do this, but in this instance, Communication Plus offered a discounted BSL Level 1 course at a local church, which was great, as it meant that we didn't have to travel to their offices in Solihull, and the discounted rate was appreciated by all. Fortunately, the standard of teaching was not discounted and our primary tutor, Jay, who is Deaf himself, is a very clear communicator and gifted teacher. It's amazing how much we've learnt in such a short space of time and Jay creates a really comfortable, supportive atmosphere - which is really important if you're learning something for the first time and don't feel very confident. As well as the actual excellent teaching, we've also been given the opportunity to meet and socialise with members of the Deaf community, which is where you really learn. Sign Language is, of course, a practical thing, so the teaching is always practical and relevant to real life - which makes it far more memorable and engaging.
