The not so great was the lobby concession area was a hot mess. Burnt popcorn being sold-like you not only could smell it, but see it on the kettle corn in the case. The floor was a mess, straw wrappers and popcorn and some guy added to it by dropping his alcohol drink and it spilled all over the floor and splashing up on me as I'm waiting for some pretzels to get made. (A worker wiped it up with his foot and a couple Sham-Wow cloths.) So the kid waiting on me took forever putting on his plastic gloves, shuffled over to make the pretzels, then stops, walks away-had no idea where. I figured I'd grab some water at the drink station. There's usually clear cups for water, but last night no cups. So I thought they either ran out or just use the soda cups. I grabbed a the middle cup. I was thirsty, small wasn't going to cut it. Hubby goes to pay while I go back to wait for the pretzels. Two boxes get put up for a lady, but no, those are chicken wings orders. The kid suddenly remembers the pretzels he took out of the freezer. Seconds later he hands me a box. The box was cold but it didn't register with me because at that moment my hubby says they charged him $7.00 for my cup of water. He said "fountain water is free I thought?" The kid said "yeah, but only in the clear cups, (which there weren't any) so I have to charge you for the cup." We go to our seats, my seat won't recline back. The feet part came out but the back was straight up and down. My hubbies leaned back, my friend to my right's did too. But not mine. I take a deep breath, it's ok. I'll enjoy my pretzels. Open the box, pick one up, it's frozen. Like rock solid frozen. I can't make this stuff up. So I walk back down to the concessions and a nice manager lady noticed me approaching. I said these are frozen. She grabbed the box and picked one up, she was like omg! These weren't even cooked! She went around to the prep area and showed a couple kids-one was the one that messed up the order. He didn't say a word to her. He just stood there. The other girl jumped into action with her manager because they were behind on pretzel orders. I got my pretzels fast. Rushed back to my non reclining seat and enjoyed them. But this is why I go to Kenwood.

Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. When we entered the theater, it was visibly dirty. There was popcorn and debris scattered throughout the auditorium, making it appear as though it had not been cleaned after the previous showing. I wiped off my seat and hoped for the best. Shortly after the movie began, my back became extremely itchy. At first, I assumed there was simply something on the seat that I had missed. However, I later realized that I had been bitten multiple times by what appeared to be bedbugs. My back was covered in bites by the end of the movie. A clean and safe theater should be the minimum expectation for guests. I hope management addresses both the cleanliness of the theater and any potential pest issues immediately so that other customers do not have a similar experience.

The laid-back atmosphere is evident throughout the experience -- from the low-tech check-in counter (if you buy online, you just give your name to the volunteer who checks it off the list & tells you to go in -- no ticket stub necessary), to the ice cream shop on the other side of the building (they let you bring the ice cream into the movie), to the relaxed way Tim comes out before the film to introduce it, and leads the discussion afterwards. The theater is clean and comfortable, and large enough for the large groups they attract. Their big event every year is the Oscar Shorts, i.e. the short movies that are contenders for this year's Oscars. I saw the animation shorts recently, but there's also action shorts and documentary shorts (I'll probably check them all out in the next few weeks). As always, what I did watch was enjoyable, unique, and seen in a great venue with fellow movie aficionados.

This cinema is wonderful. Everyone was there to see a good film. No distractions. People passionate about film. I believe the guy told us that the Cincinnati World Cinema has been around since 2002 but they just recently moved into the Garfield Theater. They've been renovating their space but it looks close to complete. They also work on a volunteer basis. If the place was closer to Louisville, I would donate my time here. For my Louisville friends, if you've ever been to The Speed Museum for a film, this place could be compared. The difference is this place is missing the museum part with a larger focus on the film at hand. One of the volunteers came out before the film and talked about the film. He offered up information on the director and the film. I've been in similar settings but I feel like the information and interaction here was much better. I won't go into how great the film is, 'Shoplifters', but you should absolutely see it. After the movie, the people that wanted to go across the street(to a restaurant-bar) could for an after-film discussion. From the talks, it seems they normally do this in the theater. Had it not been for the impending snowstorm and drive back to Louisville, I would've stayed for the discussion. After just one visit, I'll absolutely check their site regularly and make special trips to Cincinnati for films. I enjoyed my viewing here. Despite a snowstorm; 'Shoplifters' is also playing in Louisville this next weekend(at the Speed), it was totally worth the trip to Cincinnati to see this film.

I can tell you the excitement I had as a child going to school field trips here. You would pack a brown bag lunch and sit outside the museum by the fountains, and then enjoy whatever was playing at the Omnimax. What sweet memories! The Omnimax just went digital. In the past, before the show, you could stand outside and watch the film fly through the reels. You could even watch the workers reset the film in between shows. That area is still there, but there is now no need for film, as it is now digital. To be honest, I really couldn't tell any huge differences now compared to what it used to be. The volcano show was the first of their digital videos. The announcement before the show began reminded us that some of the improvements included more speakers behind the screen, a digital upgrade, and larger seats in the audience--all good things. Non-member pricing is nine dollars for the show. Member pricing is about 6 to 7 dollars. The show last little less than an hour. It is first come first serve, so try to get to the line about 15 minutes before the show begins. You can check ticket prices online to see how many seats are sold each showing. If you are checking out the museum, you must check out the Omnimax! It is definitely a good addition to your ticket.

The festivals are always a hit. A couple summers ago the Louis Prima band was there, which was excellent! Very entertaining. The levee mall area lacks foot traffic fluidity. The feng shui is so off, even outside of it. We haven't gone to bowl (can you access it from inside the mall?) and it's been forever that we've gone to the theater to catch a movie. The aquarium is for families, which you see a lot of in this area. There are a couple restaurants around the area that we like but AT the levee we can pass pretty much all them. Soft drinks were only available at one specific stand, which I guess makes sense given this is a beer festival but it did make things inconvenient for a non-drinker like me. My favorite comedian, Chad Daniels, flew in to town from Minneapolis for this event and destroyed the stage under the tunnel. I didn't catch Preacher Lawson's set on the main stage, but he was on last year's America's Got Talent and did well there so I'm sure he was fun to watch. Many of my favorite local comedians took to the various stages and I was able to enjoy sets from some of them like Ran Barnaclo, Anna Mazza, Lee Kimbrell, Grant Stiles, and many more. The weather was perfect, the comedy was funny, and the crowds seemed to be having a great time. It was about as perfect an event as you could ask for!
