I've been a fan of Common Thread for many years and would have given them 5 stars in the past as their displays were so perfect and original they would draw me in every few weeks, and I would find the coolest decorative and wearable items. This past year, they lost their touch on the displays. So I'm knocking them down a star., Because I've lost the thrill of coming in to find out what treasures await me. It's still a great fabric place. But it's really not amazing anymore. read more

Outstanding shop of hard to find exotic fabrics...from a gauzy cotton from Indian to a showcase of fine silk from China, this is a sensory and tactile wonderland...I think its the best shop in Taos. Expect to pay $20 a yard for most fabrics, but elegance comes with a hefty price tag. This shopkeeper is very attentive and friendly. Even if you don't sew, stop here..its more art than fabric. read more

I have been in this store multiple times before & I absolutely loved it but at the time I had no place in my home for multicolored textiles & pillows. This past weekend I finally got my dream & was able to purchase 3 large pillows (~$93 with the insert), two large throws that are actually larger than king size (~$34), & at those prices I contemplated just buying the store. I was shocked by the amazing prices and could not be happier with my purchases. I however inquired about purchasing more pillows in a larger size (which were displayed in the store, but were a different color scheme than the ones I had purchased. I would have done special order or whatever was necessary to get a few more pillows to complete my room but was told that they only get shipments in about every 3-5 months; therefore, I would have to wait to see what comes in the next shipment in about two months & could not make any special orders. That's highly disappointing to me. But I guess at least I know not a lot of people will have the same item(s) as me since they don't mass produce. Or produce for that matter. read more

I was shocked by the review in Yelp.com and just felt compelled to give my review of the Common Thread, 120A Bent Street, Taos, New Mexico, 87571 505 758 8987 The Common Thread is one of my most favourite stores ever! I make my living in the fiber arts world and have written twelve books. I am a fabric designer and artist. I know good quality fabrics when I see them. The Common Threads is always a destination shop for my students when they come to my studio for classes. Most end up having boxes of fabrics sent to their homes! The Common Thread deals with high end fabrics from silk chiffons, to burn out velvets, interesting cotton, oriental silk/rayons, linens and quality fabrics from around the world. The owners Renee and Dave go out of their way to offer the unusual not the usual. They also carry a great line of ribbons, buttons and accessories. They carry the hand dyed Artemis silk ribbon and Susan Clarke buttons. I especially love the beautiful woven wraps and silk shibori scarves they carry. I have found hand-woven fabrics from Guatemala, silks from India, China, Japan and Italy. I have found cotton gauze, heavy woven wool and I recently purchased raw edged biased silk ribbon for an art project and six yards of various oriental silks.....I cannot find this quality just anywhere and that is what makes the Common Thread a unique destination shop. . Yes the shop is small, but it is well organized and a visual feast. if you take the time to really look around you will find treasures. I have shopped at a Common Thread for so many years I can't remember when this wonderful journey began. I used to be an educator for a national sewing machine company and have had the pleasure of shopping in stores around the globe. This store certainly has something for every type of sewer - art works; clothing; quilts; home dec and the list goes on. I have found the most outstanding pieces as well as embellishments to complete each project. We make a special trip up to Taos several times a year to shop in this little bit of heaven. read more

I would give it ten stars if I could. I totally disagree that it is too expensive. I have found silk organza for $10 yd! And, for a small shop it is one of the most exquisite selections that I have seen in the US. Every bolt is excellent quality, reasonably and fairly priced. Every person I have taken to this shop has been amazed at its consistent quality and value. Many people I know make the trip to Taos just for this shop! I cannot recommend it highly enough. I work all over the globe, and I work with textiles and this is as good as it gets for its size. read more

I take exception to a review I just read. Common Thread is anything but common...the selection and quality are quite uncommon. The fabrics are glorious and luxurious and when you find something so wonderful you can expect to pay a bit more. I love this store and am sad that I no longer live in Santa Fe. No more delightful jaunts to Bent St. I am a doll maker and use Common Thread fabrics, ribbons and flowers for my work. They make my dolls dance! read more

This fabric shop is the most amazing place in the world--I've travelled far and wide and been in some of the finest fabric stores in the orient, England and Europe and none of them top Common Threads. The senses are are emersed with wonderful sight, feel, smell and touch the second you walk in this intimate and friendly shop. There are bargains to be found, but beautiful fabric comes at a price so expect to pay for what you are getting. I have had more pleasure working with the yardage I purchased at Common Threads than any other--it is a divine experience. I can't wait to get my next paycheck so I can go buy more fabric! read more

Common Thread in Taos is a joy to visit! It's like walking into a treasure trove! They have some of the most unusual and beautiful fabrics I have ever seen. Not everything is expensive, sure some of the silks are high priced but where else are you going to find things like this unless you get on a plane to India or Bali. I found a really nice table cloth there for $36., very well made and more tasteful than any I see online at big stores carrying linens. I wish I lived in Taos so I could shop there more often.
