They made a very challenging time less painful and we were all able to truly celebrate the life of our father, husband, uncle, mentor and friend. The mass at the Church and 45 minute processional to the cemetery was handled with solemnity and precision. We felt we were guided gently through the process without being rushed or pushed. There was reason to be pushed because of the inclement weather and the funeral following behind us at the church. However, we were shielded from all of those concerns. The staff also collected all of the planters, flowers, pictures and mementos together so that we only needed to pick them, as well as thank you notes up the following day. I've never seen that done before at a funeral. they truly care about the deceased and the family! Chris is likely to have attended to thousands of funerals, but there was no sense that this was 'same-old, same-old' with him. He was so in tune with where the family was emotionally, and was able to adjust accordingly. He was such a calming, helpful presence throughout. He has the wisdom of knowing that people's faculties are compromised at a time like this and guided us gently through each part of the process at just the right time, never invasive, checking in on what might be needed and offering just the right amount of guidance and preparation. Likewise, every inch of the funeral home and their chapels have been designed to make you feel the warmth, serenity and dignity you would wish for at such a time: The decor is elegant but homey; the background music is peaceful and settling; the fish pond and fountain in the reception area adds a natural, calming element, and of course, there's Jake. Jake (Chris's shadow) is a young, highly trained labradoodle who is the resident support dog, gently walking around, offering himself to anyone he senses may need him. He is a special soul and he loves his work. I don't think the process could have gone more smoothly. The chapel was beautifully set up and my mother-in-law looked so naturally elegant and peaceful at her wake in the chapel. They did an incredible job. They created a beautiful digital slideshow from all our photos and set up our photo boards and flowers magnificently. After the service, they packed up everything from the chapel and stored it for us carefully until we could collect it at our convenience. Nothing seemed too much for them as long as they could help make this process as easy and meaningful as possible for us. One final aspect worth mentioning: The funeral home allowed us to arrange a lot upfront, before my mother-in-law passed, which similar business services do not always allow. Once someone has passed, emotions are so high that it's really hard to concentrate on small details, which is required to plan accordingly. Being able to plan this all upfront was incredibly helpful.

Moms makeup was caked on her face and she looked horrible. The burial at Oakwood Cemetery was horrific. The family wanted to see mom lowered into her final resting place. My family was told this was not permitted. We saw Dan leaving in the rusty Hearse before the mourners had left the gravesite. This shows a total lack of respect to the deceased and the loved ones. My father passed away in his nursing home in Oakdale this week and while we were expecting it to…read morehappen, it was quite sudden at the end. So we needed to arrange for a funeral home to pick him up the same day, prepare him, bring him to the grave site and manage the process with the cemetery. The nursing home recommended Fives along with a few others which they had a good experience with. So I called around and Liana at Fives was very helpful in walking through every step and answering my questions. Their pricing was very clear and they emailed me a quote within minutes of me asking. They were reasonably priced, especially compared with funeral homes closer to the city and they offered the same range of services that met our needs. So we selected them. We drove out to see my father and collect his things, and Shawn (the owner, carrying on from his father) met us there, answered a few more questions and was very kind and professional as he moved our father out of his room. Fives was able to arrange for the burial the very next afternoon at our cemetery in Queens. So that was very efficient. Shawn met us at the cemetery office before the scheduled time and handled everything with them once he had all the relevant info from us. At the grave, Shawn accompanied us to the plot and offered a few words to get us started which was nice as we were doing the ceremony ourselves with a very small group. He also reminded us of some of the nuances of the ceremony which was helpful. So our experience with Fives was as good as you could hope for in a situation no one looks forward to. Highly recommended that you consider them. While our situation was relatively simple, but on a short timeline, based on our experience, I'm confident Fives would do a very good job with even more complex situations.
