I've been in dozens of comic book stores, and this was easily the worst experience I've had yet. When my brother and I visited, it was just a disaster. It doesn't particularly bother me that the store isn't in the most ideal location. I also don't care that the actual store is downstairs in a somewhat rundown building. Nor do I care that the place is dark, and a complete mess. Though, it would have been nice to know how the hell the place was actually organized. Where are the new comics? Back issues?! Are they all just thrown in together? Why can't I find anything? Also, why is the one and only employee ignoring the only customers in the store? Why is this employee so terribly lacking of any customer service skills that he won't say a word?! I'm standing at the counter, two feet away from him, and he still refuses to acknowledge me, when it's clear that I want to buy something. Really? 20 minutes go by, and the only employee in the store acts as if his only customers do not exist. How does this place stay in business?! Is this seriously the only comic book store in all of Dubuque? If the owner is "a recluse that is uncomfortable around others", then that's unfortunate. However, if you own a business, especially retail, you absolutely must do better than this. Or have someone else on staff that can actually do what's required to make some sales. There were two people in the store, trying to spend some money, but really weren't given the opportunity. We ended up just leaving, having not been treated with any respect, and without spending any money. And I don't think we'll be giving this place another chance. Extremely disappointing. read more

Basically a gaming store with a few comics. If your a gamer or want to order new books you'll like it. I'm a back issue hunter and they had hardly any books older than three years ago. Very surprised I didn't see any graphic novels at all. read more

New owner is a good guy to talk to and very helpful with the kids. Store is clean and bright inside. Very well organized. Big improvement. Went to Pokemon tournament with my son. Well organized tournament with nice prizes. Was a fun afternoon. There was even an area with a flat screen TV, table, and couches for those who were not playing that wanted to hang out. read more

I've been coming to Comic World since I was in high school over 20 years ago. Even though I've moved away from the area, I still drop by almost every time I come back to town, but I think those days are over. In their current location at JFK/Asbury, I've never once had an employee speak to me. Most of the time they're too busy on facebook or otherwise occupied with the computer. I was in there today, the only person in the whole place besides some guy behind the counter and two cats. Not even an acknowledgement of my presence. That's not too huge of a deal for me, because I'd rather have that than an employee that hovers. But still, a hello would have been nice. A "Can I help you find anything?" would have been even better. I typically look for board games, fantasy flight LCGs, stuff like that. This place does have a decent selection of games, but shockingly, they had NOTHING for Android: Netrunner, possibly one of the most popular card games right now (#5 game overall on boardgamegeek.com). Tons of Warhammer:Invasion, but c'mon. They also never have a bargain/sale rack either. Every other card/game/comic store I've been to usually has some sort of sale going on at some point, either clearancing old stock, a buy one, get another for 10%, something. I love to support local businesses (that's why I'm in there in the first place), but they need to give me something to keep coming back- the thrill of finding a deal, some reason that says "buy here, even though you could get the same thing for 40% off online". I guess they do have a huge collection of comics, which is nice, if you're into that. I'm not. I've also read a lot of negative stuff about this place online, especially in regards to the Free Comic book day- things like holding back stock for "favorite" customers, etc. That doesn't figure into my review, since it's hearsay, but I begin to notice a trend of not really caring about the customer here. In conclusion, I think I made my last visit there today. They have nothing I'm really interested in, their prices are standard MSRP, and their customer service has been non-existent in my experience. read more

I tried to start a pull in 2012, but was told that I needed to pull a minimum of seven comics. I only have three regular comics, plus the occasional addition. Instead of frequenting a fairly local shop instead drive +75 miles to Madison. Honestly, I'm fairly new to comics so I don't know if this is a common practice in stores, but it seems odd to turn away guaranteed sales. A recent Yelp! reviewer noted there were new owners in 2016. I decided to give them another try. I setup my pull a few months back. On my first pickup they had to pull them from the general store shelf. Not a huge deal, perhaps some of the books had just come in. On my second pickup they didn't have my comics set aside and some of them had sold out. The employee said that if you weren't in each month they would sell the comics from the pulls, explaining that not doing so was "leaving money on the table". Ironic because I immediately canceled my pull. I really want to support this shop, but I just need a way to guarantee my pulls will be held. Honestly, I'd even be willing put down a deposit or prepay. I just want a copy each month. At minimum, call or email the person before selling comics from their pulls. Unfortunately, I'll once again be driving the extra distance to Madison. read more

Very very good selection of board games, comics, graphic novels, and war and adventure gaming supplies. Very good selection of YuGiOh cards (according to my son!) Quite frankly, a better selection than almost any I've seen in the greater Chicago area. read more

Let me star by saying that even though many people view the owner as an a-hole or moody, I get along with him. He's just a recluse that is uncomfortable around others. Anyway, as a comic shop goes there are modern issues and some from the last 10-20 years. The shelving that recent comic are on are not good and issues tend to double over and bend. There was a time that when issues were moved form the "new this week" section, they were bagged & boarded before being re-shelfed. That didn't last long and it is back to falling issues and damaged books. I don't know why they stopped. It couldn't have been cost because I know they were charging .25 cents extra for each issue that was B/B (which is fine in my opinion). As for the back stock, the wall of drawer boxes is a mis-match, unorganized lot of current overflow and stuff from the 90s and early 2000s. There are no big ticket issue displayed and when they do have something it is never advertised. If you get a pull list started you will probably only get about 90% of what you are suppose to. The rest you will have to hunt for in the shop because it was "missed" or pulls weren't made that week. If you get something ordered special there is a 60% chance that you will see it on a shelf because the owner forgot you wanted it. There are no bargain bins, no dollar bins. Most back stock is cover price or more. The store does have a big selection of Magic cards and board games. There is a lot to choose from in these departments. These areas are pretty organized, so you can see where the owners passions lay. Other than the owner, an older gentleman named Todd works from time to time, normally on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Todd is extremely nice and tries to be as helpful as he can. He is the comic guy and you can often here the owner tell people they should stop by when Todd is in for comic info. Visa versa, Todd is not knowledgeable about magic cards and will tell you to speak with the owner when he is there. The general look of the shop is messy, dirty and disorganized. I don't think the floor has been cleaned in years. Boxes are pilled everywhere and many have new stock that will never see the light of day. One last thing I will say is that the owner is really good about giving deals at the register. Normally if you ask if he can help you on the total he will. I've even seen him give a few thing away for free with purchases of other items. The reason for 3 stars is because of the messiness, the disorganization, the inconsistencies of doing business here. I'm not saying don't check it out, because I think you should. There is a lot here. Just not always easy to find and the attitude of the owner my be off-putting. read more

I was visiting this store and considered purchasing some GW models only to see either the owner or employee stop a customer from buying a set of GW dice to haggle a higher price off of him because he could get "a better price out of them on eBay". He wanted to mark the retail price from $10 up to $50 because "that's what they were going on eBay for". Being in the business to sell stock and purchase from suppliers myself previously, I know how map pricing works and I know that GW practices it with many stores. Getting merchandise at cheap prices from the manufacturer, putting them on your shelves at a mapped retail price and then upping the price the minute a customer wants to purchase that item badly enough is in poor form. The employee or owner literally said to the customer that he could raise the price to get more of a profit if he wanted to. Well, guess what, if I wanted to, I could simply not just shop at your store anymore and you'd lose my business and the business of the people I also game with. Furthermore, manufacturers who spend a great deal of time and effort to sell their products wouldn't appreciate your attitude. A call has been placed to GW. If you work over your customer base, you won't have any customers or income. Perhaps you could haggle your way out of that one? I'll take my business online from now on. Thanks. read more

Where to begin? Its too bad that I am not able to give a rating of 0/5 stars because I would. First of all this place is about as dreary as it gets. Its seems dirty and very poorly taken care of. Not to mention the fact that it smells like cats because the "human being" running the place ACTUALLY HAS HIS CATS RUNNING AROUND THE STORE! This man is about as unfriendly as it gets. He doesn't like to be talked to or asked questions. He also has the tendency to show up whenever he wants thus disregarding the scheduled opening times and I've seen him kick people out without finishing their purchase simply so that he could close early because he felt like it. There have also been times where he refused to make a sale for no apparent reason. Maybe they don't understand that to keep a business afloat you must make sales and the place is a ghost town the last few times I've been in there. This place has a lot of potential but only if they find new management and until that does happen, I will never step foot in there again. read more
