Via an incredible grant from the Parker Jewish Institute someone will be here while I'm away. The agency, Home Instead, is incredible. The coordinator accompanied today's aide to make introductions. Wednesday's aide stopped by for a long visit. I'm stunned both wanted extensive demonstrations of their responsibilities. I've got a long list of things to finish before I leave. However, I feel comfortable leaving my parents in good hands. If any Long Island people ever need a home health aide Home Instead is top notch.

After a dismal experience with Companions and Homemakers, I finally took some time to research for replacement help for my mother. From the very first phone call I could tell Golden Horizons is a quality organization. The owner, Lisa, came to meet my mother and me personally and the following day the assigned caregiver came (on a day off) to meet us. The ad for this job was for a CNA supervisor position, when arrived the owner stated the "position was already filled, they were looking for a backup in case they needed to fire the present employee." Weird but okay. Why advertise for a job that's already filled? Applicant was subsequently hired after first meeting as a caregiver per diem. Met second time again in a Dunkin' Donuts with "office manager." Signed paperwork, gave copies of drivers license, insurance, etc. After one week of being hired, ZERO contact from employer regarding work. Supposedly they were trying to find a client for care. Recieved text regarding a potential client every other weekend 10 hour shifts and a couple days during the week. Applicant/employee stated very early on that 4 hour shifts worked better, stating this because they applied for a position that didn't exist! Wanted to feel the company out. Recieved text two weeks later asking if I was interested in client 4 hours on Wednesday's, said yes I was. Office manager said she was would let me know that Monday whether it was official. HAVE YET TO HEAR FROM THIS EMPLOYER AGAIN. That was a month ago. Super shady business that owner claimed she was proud to be running however it's clearly disorganized and not good on their follow through.... not sure if this company is even in business anymore.

When the doctor referred us to this "home hospice" we didn't realize there are several different…read moreagencies. At first it sounded great, but this organization CAUSED way more stress than they alleviated - for the patient and family. They belittled her decision to want to die in a facility (preferably Branford inpatient hospice or a hospital) and kept insisting that she should want to be at home. Medication was left with no clear instructions about dosage and timing. Appointments were ignored and staff would "drop by" when they felt like it (often waking everyone in the household up after sleepless nights). When we tried to get her into a nursing home because they said she wasn't "ready" for in-patient hospice (unable to walk, not eating, yelling that she wanted to go to hospice and die) they directed us to file for chapter 19 at the Access Health... wasted HOURS and finally figured out the resource was somewhere totally different (I think it was the government site). Personnel in the home appeared to be looking at personal papers on tabletops. The home health aid was the only one who really helped, after weeks of having her not cleaned up. To be fair, one of the on-call nurses was very caring and helpful with late night medication questions. They often would not wear masks and some used the restroom and didn't even wash their hands! Family did not want them living in the home, so the only alternative from them was letting adult children figure out how to lift and move her from bed to bathroom to couch - always a painful experience, physically and mentally. Thankfully, she got her wish and was finally admitted to inpatient hospice (excellent care). All I can say is that there are other choices and would not recommend this agency. Oh, and one last thing: when she passed away there was not one single card or other acknowledgement of sympathy from them.
