Seriously Whitney Manor, you freakin' rock. My grandfather has been in and out of the hospital with hip-related problems/surgeries for the past few years. After each stay in the hospital, he is required to spend an extended amount of time in a rehabilitation "home" to receive antibiotics to help ensure that his hip doesn't get infected. He's been to a handful in the area (including University on the Boulevard in New Haven, Arden House in Hamden, and Gaylord in Wallingford), and WM is, by far, his most favorite one (btw, whatever you do...avoid Arden House at ALL costs)! The entire staff at WM is extremely friendly...everyone from the receptionist to the admissions coordinator to the nurses to the medical assistants. This is my grandfather's third stay at WM, and there were quite a few staff members that remembered exactly who he was, and weren't shy about expressing that they were happy to see him again. WHAT?! This place is like Cheers, with beds and old people instead of beer and drunks. My grandfather expressed that he needed a wider wheelchair, because the standard one was rubbing against his hip, causing much irritation to his wound. He left WM for the day to spend the day with my grandmother, and when we went to drop him back off...a new, wider wheelchair was waiting for him in his room. His room has its own temperature gauge, which is a BIG DEAL. There's nothing like being cold and not being able to do a thing about it. It's comforting to know that he can control the temperature without having to ask for anyone's help or permission. I recently visited, and all of the staff greeted me as I walked by. People know my mother by name, and remembered her as well from previous stays. Also, WM doesn't have that typical "home"/hospital smell. You know, that smell that makes you dread visiting relatives that happen to be in homes. There were also lovely decorations all over every floor, including a huge inflatable Easter bunny in the courtyard. This is, without a doubt, the homiest "home" that I've ever visited. Of course, being stuck in a "home" away from your real home must suck hardcore. But, at least at WM I know that my grandfather is as comfortable as he can be until he's ready to return to his real home. If you're able, book your loved one for a stay here...it's the best one in the area. read more

Five star facility that cared for my loved one when our family couldn't any longer. My loved one was here for both short and long term and both times received great care and dignity. The one star is generous. Awful place. Mom was there for several weeks and in that time many things went wrong. She was not given her meds one day. Another day she was not fed. It was always extremely difficult to get anyone to come in and help when she needed it. Some of the staff were quite rude. When I complained about her not getting her meds, the administrator said "well, cross fingers it will get better". I made it clear that was not an acceptable response. If you have the choice, go to Whitney Center or Grimes. Much better care. read more

A great place to work the staff is excellent the food is great the janitorial service is good they even watch the wheelchairs once a week they have plenty of linden for the residence plenty of towels read more

If there was a way to give no stars I would Stay away from this place , stayed there two nights and glad we left and transferred to Elim park. So much better and doesn't smell like a toilet. If you can move or transfer I would you will thank me later read more

I did 4 weeks of out patient therapy at Whitney Manor after having a full right hip replacement, I was a bit nervous after reading some if the reviews but I needed transportation and Whitney Manor offered it. I was more than pleased with the therapy I received from my therapist (Bill). Would recommend for out patient therapy read more

My mother is a resident of Whitney Manor for 3 years. It wasn't an easy decision to move her there, but my sisters and I had reached a point where we could not longer care for her. She entered there at the age of 93 and required constant care. She was placed in a room which we filled with personal pictures and momento's. All in all we were happy with her treatment. The majority of the aides were kind and caring. Even the cleaning crew were polite and helpful.The facility is clean and the meals are healthy. She received excellent nursing care and if it were not for the recent problem that has come up within the last 2 months, my review would have been 5 stars. Over the past 3 years my mother has had two roommates. She 'made friends' with each of them and had companionship on the two days my sisters and I were unable to visit her. Sadly, both women passed away. My mother mourned for each of them. About 2 months ago a new 'roommate' was brought it and (I believe) she is suffering from dementia. She screams obscenities and generally makes my mothers life a living hell. I will say that the aides remove the woman from the room during the day hours but they bring her back at night when the screaming resumes through out the night, keeping my mother awake. We have requested several times that the woman be placed in another room, but we are told that they are 'protecting her rights'. My mothers 'rights' are that she can move if the new roommate is bothering her. It took us nearly a year to have my mother feel comfortable in her new surroundings, she now refers to Whitney Manor as 'home', she doesn't want to leave the only room she knows. My argument is that my mother was friendly with the other room mates she had, the new comer is the problem, not my mother. The woman really has no idea where she is and to move her would be the simplest solution. Mom is heading toward her 97th birthday and to move her now would be disruptive to her routine. The people I have spoken with smile and nod and say they understand, but they won't move the newcomer out of the room. I find this 'rule' to be unbelievable. I feel if someone comes in to disrupt an otherwise peaceful setting then the one to move should be the disruptive one. Keep this in mind should you choose to move a loved one there. read more

I'm sorry Ethan but i seriously disagree with you on almost every point that you made. My grandmother fell last month and after a short stay at Yale we decided to try WM because someone recommended it. She normally would have gone to Montowese but we decided to try WM and o boy did we regret it. THERE IS a smell when you walk in and all the standard floral decorations you would expect from a "home". Ever since the first night when my mother and I brought her the staff was little help and i was given an attitude and treated like i was stupid because i used the wrong door. The staff does seem very pleasant, to your face, but they are ineffective and most often then not ignore the requests of their patients. I witnessed a female aid treat a patient in the room across from my grandmothers and was just disgusted with how she spoke to her. Most likely because she had no outside guest visiting her, every staff member was pleasant and spoke to my grandmother with respect while i was present but she told me they weren't as nice when it was just her. My grandmother said they spoke to her as if she was an incompetent child and would often tell her things just to pacify her. I heard the treatment of the permanent patients on the upper levels is even worse. My recommendation if you have a loved one in need of rehabilitation services would be to try and get them in Montowese in North Haven. Use Whitney Manor as a last resort. read more

To Whom It May Concern: On March 17, 2016 I came to Whitney Manor after Open Heart Surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital. I had chosen Whitney Manor for rehabilitation even though I had no previous knowledge of what to expect. I was apprehensive, as I am sure many people are in the same position. I did not know what to expect and I had heard all the horror stories on TV and in the papers. What I found was a complete and pleasant surprise! Every single person, without exception, was professional, courteous, kind and did everything in a pleasant way. When I say every single person I mean every single person. CNAs, Nurses, APRs, Doctors, Housekeeping, Office Staff, OT and of course, my favorite, PT. If I left anyone out I apologize. I don't want to risk mentioning names because I may leave someone out. This behavior was not limited to me. They treated my wife the same way. Everyone called her by name and did everything to answer questions and get her the help she needed. Lord knows that is exactly what she needed after what she had been through for the last ten days. I don't know enough positive words to say what I feel about Whitney Manor. When I filled out the exit survey I gave every question a five (highest) rating. Someone asked me if I meant all those fives I said "Yes, but if I could give them all sixes I would have.". I have been telling the world about my time here and how much it means to me. If I can help in any way to convey these thoughts to others, please let me know.
