I found myself in the worst possible situation where I was on a long business trip and my wife, at…read morehome and alone--our closest family is six hours south in LA--was in need of immediate care at home with a debilitating back injury. Unable to care for herself, even the basics of cooking and getting dressed, I searched Yelp for options and found Joy. As a registered nurse, I wanted to see if I could hire her to spend Tues-Sun looking after my wife until I arrived home Monday. She said she would stop by in a few hours to check in on her, and within 45 minutes of arriving, had helped my wife with some of the personal and house care duties she'd been unable to perform on her own. More importantly, she was able to assess my wife's devolving physical condition, called, and said she was rushing her to the emergency room. Trying to soldier through the pain, my wife was unaware how poorly she was doing, and didn't know some scary things had started to happen internally. Joy, with her RN training, was a true and genuine lifesaver. Once admitted, and after running a number of tests, the ER doctor told us my wife was 2-3 days away from going into a coma or having a heart attack. As I was not due home for another 6 days, I fear to think where we'd be without Joy's willingness to take my call, make a fast check-up on my wife, and make a judgement call that literally saved my wife's life. This isn't so much of a testimonial as it is an eternal thank you.

The staff themselves were great. The nurse was great. The chaplain was great. The social worker was great. The caregiver was great. However, she was in agony until the last 24 hours of her life, when she slipped into a coma. I wish I had been better educated, for example, I did not know what terminal agitation was. We were only offered oral morphine and Ativan. I wish we could've been offered something more even if it involved transferring her to a nursing home. She never saw a doctor, even though he signed the death certificate. The staff individually were very nice and kind, but it seemed like the repertoire for agitation and pain management were very limited. I wish I had been provided with more options. I was checking to see if things had improved over the last four years and it looks like they have and I certainly hope so.

She…read moreis so patient and was able to make adjustments to find the right person for our mom, who can sometimes be difficult (oops did I say that?). Karishma helped directly on a few occasions. Karishma was always available on nights and weekends and has a calm and comforting personality during times of stress. The caregivers were all lovely, and 2 of them were extremely amazing, though we did have some turnover from time to time. In terms of an area for improvement, I wish she had a few more folks to call upon - we had some gaps when someone was sick or as someone left. We were fortunate to have long-term care insurance, and Karishma's invoices and paperwork were sufficient. Overall Karishma was responsive and caring, and the caregivers were reliable, dedicated, and kind.

It has been a terribly difficult and traumatic time for our family, as we have all been adjusting to a new sense of normal, while learning to care for him, and trying to preserve our mother's energy, as much as possible. Luckily for us, Amity was the agency of choice recommended by the Case Manager at the hospital. Peggy, Hazel, and a few others came to help us within a few days, asking about our perspective of his condition, his history, and needs while patiently going over his records with us, and examining him. It didn't take them long to organize the help my dad needed, and to start coming. In this very difficult time, it was refreshing to feel totally supported, encouraged, and to regain hope again for his plan for improvement since leaving the hospital. Peggy, taught us new ways of doing things to lessen the complications my dad had been experiencing. Hazel came everyday to tend to his wounds, which developed mostly during the hospitalization period. Both Peggy and Hazel were always reliable, and we looked forward to their guidance. Peggy went through my dad's medications and looked for discrepancies, to ensure my dad's medications were being given accurately. She made some discoveries, which helped us to make some corrections. I know many people don't have a lot of faith in agency services, but I honestly feel if it were not for Amity, my father would not still be alive with us today, with such improvements.
