Ok...if you have children and make it all the way through the school years without one of them…read morebringing lice home you are extremely lucky. Our daughter's entire class was infested thanks to an ill timed sleep-over some of them had. No blame...it happens. That said, when you get them, you really do have to go nuclear to get clear without having to continually fight it. This means cleaning thoroughly, bagging any plushy toys long enough to kill them and their eggs and being exceptionally detailed when it comes to treating the hair and head. This is where Hair Fairies came in for us. Yes, we treated our kids and ourselves with the standard pharmacy bought pesticide based creams and shampoos. Several times in fact. But, we just couldn't be thorough going through the hair to remove nits and ensure we were clear. Hair fairies does. They are exceptionally thorough and detailed. They will slowly, steadily and methodically go through the hair inch by inch so that you KNOW you and or your child is clear. They also have a two week guarantee as long as EVERYONE in your home gets checked by them. What you need to know, however, is that they are not cheap. Based on my experience with them, they charge roughly $150 an hour for the time you are sitting in their chairs. At least they did with us. While I'm confident they did a good job, I don't know that we would use them again based solely on cost. Are they convenient...absolutely. If the peace of mind and convenience are your primary concerns, you should definitely use these folks if you end up with lice. If cost is your primary concern, then I'd forego and do it yourself.

Especially if you are dealing with lice for the first time, I highly recommend calling Christina…read morefrom Lice spa. My daughter said a bug dropped from her hair to her desk. I quickly tried to google some pictures and look through her hair. It seemed like she had nits but I wasn't confident and was mostly in denial. Christina arrived at our home on a Sunday evening within 1.5 hrs after hanging up the phone. Everyone in our family got checked and treated. The removal process involved saturating hair, dividing in sections and meticulously combing through to get nits and lice. We learned so much from her during the hours she was at our house - watching her method to remove, learning about lice, its lifecycle, how it spreads, how to eradicate and clean the house. She was a former science teacher and it shows in terms of knowledge and being great with kids. Even though she did a very thorough job during her initial visit, you should have the expectation to need to do continued treatments (put product in hair and comb through section by section) in the following days and weeks. We did a follow up check 4 days later for additional peace of mind.

Ugh, I'm sorry you've been graced by lice…read more The go-to advice will be to go to Lice Clinics of America, which we dutifully did two months ago. We thought the 30 day guarantee would be good. And paid $200 a head to get the treatment. But the lice came back (or never left) and when we went in for the follow up treatment, because my bald husband hadn't also been treated, the guarantee wasn't honored. So we paid again. And the lice remained or came back. By month 3, when we found lice AGAIN, I was despondent. How much time can a person spend on laundry, on driving, on waiting, on dealing with this pest? I was amazed to find Christina. For $150/hr she comes to your house (at 8 pm!) and can check every person and comb out the nits. This ended up being way more time and cost efficient. Plus she is interesting, professional and capable. I had one treatment at LCA with a tech who seemed very disinterested, who didn't believe me when I brought in a louse in scotch tape and said he didn't see any on my head so it was probably just a one-off. Christina comes with a completely different air. She even comes with a microscope that examines the louse so you can see what stage it is in. The treatment involves a follow up comb out 4-6 days later. So glad we did this as well because she found the microscopic nits that weren't large enough to comb out the first time (and which is probably why at LCA we kept having the lice come back). So there really is no comparison here. We are lucky to have Christina in our area to offer this service. Wishing you a complete riddance of the lice, fellow reader!

Upon being notified by a third party, we booked a same day appointment for a 1 hour lice removal treatment that is listed clearly on their website as costing $135. See link and I have taken a screenshot. As soon as my daughter and I walked through the door, the assigned technician Jen, began aggressively pressuring me to screen myself and book screenings for my husband and second child, at $60 each. She outlined their policy of free repeat treatments if every family member is screened and a re-infestation occurs. I thanked her for the info and let her know we'd decide and may choose to conduct our own screens, but she would not relent. I finally asked her to please focus on my child and get started and that I would decide later. Jen asked if I had any questions and was talkative and opinionated. She said OTC treatments like Nix are toxic and that Hair Fairies only use a gentle leave in conditioner that loosens the glue of the lice / eggs followed my manual lice combing to remove lice/eggs. She also claimed that lice have become resistant to the active ingredient in Nix. In the first 30 minutes, Jen found 3 "eggs" that looked like specks of dandruff, no lice. She commented that it was a "very early and mild infestation" and then handed over to another technician. This new technician over the course of 45 minutes, found a grand total of .......zero eggs and zero lice. As 45m had passed with this new tech, I asked if treatment was complete, and she didn't have a clue. I then spoke to her colleague who informed me that due to my daughter's hair length, our treatment would be 3 hours!! I was shocked and went to the front desk to let them know only 3 eggs had been found in the first 30m, and that continuing to comb my poor daughter's hair for another 110 minutes seemed beyond unnecessary. I also noted that I had originally booked for 1 hour and $135, as listed on their website of services. The response I received was an aggressive "but you didnt book through the website did you?? You booked on the phone" -- to which I responded "yes and I clearly referenced the 1 hour, $135 treatment when I called". As it turns out, we were being charged by the HOUR, only no one could tell me what the hourly rate was. They kept referring to my daughter as a "moderate" infestation and when I repeated that it was THREE "eggs" and no lice, which seemed minor / mild if anything, esp in comparison to the children seated alongside us with 30 eggs and as many as 40 lice detected. For 75m of "treatment" aka combing with a lice comb and abundant conditioner, we were charged a mind boggling $202. Had we done 3 hours of treatment (which isn't even listed on their website), I estimate it would be an ADDITIONAL $296 (this is based on the following math 110m/75m x $202 since no one could give me an actual answer in store). They wrote me a card saying my child is 100% clear of head lice, noting only 3 eggs, no bugs were found and that our treatment was incomplete because I chose to conclude it at 75m not 3 hours. I am shocked and disappointed at the flat out dishonesty on pricing, duration and process, and the mischaracterization of 3 eggs / no lice as a "moderate infestation". I am really saddened that a local vendor would prey on families in this manner. Even if someone has $678 to spend on screening three family members and treating one family member ($60x3 for screenings and $202 + $296 for treatment) -- then there needs to be clear and proactive communication. That way, one can make an informed decision, esp vis-a-vis the many other options that exist including a $10 lice comb and an $18 OTC treatment. This is beyond predatory, it is false price listing and illegal under the FTC.
