Awesome lumber available at Colonial Hardwoods. I stopped by aiming to get some pieces to make some cutting boards. The guy that helped me (I forgot his name unfortunately) was super helpful and took me to the sectin where they basically just had a ton of off-cuts that were perfect for cutting boards and for different species of wood. The prices were extremely reasonable and they had a great selection, and I've already made a few boards from the material. Would not hesitate to stop by here again. Purchased a butcher block piece of wood. Gave them the measurements, and was told two weeks. One week later it was done, almost to my specifications. One star deduction as they didn't round the corners as specified, but it only took them an extra 15 minutes. Overall very happy with the service and they delivered within half the time promised. Will go back with any additional wood needs. read more

Colonial Hardwoods made a tiger maple desk top for us, and it is absolutely gorgeous. We had a large, odd side space and all the custom desktops we found online were ridiculously priced. Colonial Hardwoods quoted us a reasonable price. was planning on finishing the top myself, but after hearing the quote decided to have them do it all so it looked as professional as possible, and still ended up spending a little less than the internet custom places. Their wood selection is fantastic, and they were so nice and helpful during selection and pickup. If I ever need any other custom wood items, this is the only place I'll go. read more

So I came here to have a custom crown molding replaced. I came with the sample and they made the custom work. The staff were very professional and not condescending. They explain what they had to do and how much it would cost. Only place I know that does custom wood work. Place is expensive but you get what you paid for. read more

Decent selection of hardwoods including some really cool hard to find varieties. That's the good part. The rest is kind of a mess: 1. They charge a 3% credit card fee. If you decide to pay by check to avoid said fee it's like the inquisition ("who's check is this? I need to make a copy with your ID", "what's your phone number?"). Dude: you seriously think I'm going to buy a bunch of wood from you and bounce a check? Seriously, high crime alert! Is this a common problem with this kind of business? I'd gladly use a credit card but I'm not paying the fee. 2. Good luck getting someone to help you. They're mostly hanging in an office or out helping people with small "toy" projects (looking for little pieces here and there). When I finally got someone to help it was another inquisition: "You can't cut these pieces on the job site?" It literally says all over the shop "straight cuts are free." Also, since I don't drive a mega sized work truck -- no, I can't fit 10-12 foot boards in my car! That's why I'm here, to get some boards with a couple of cuts! In summary: zero customer service, but good selections and wood varieties. Just temper your expectations going in. And word of advice: bring cash or be prepared for the credit card surcharge. read more

Colonial Hardwoods is a one-stop shop for great quality, hard-to-find woods. If they don't have it in stock, they can get it quickly. They can cut wood down and do some prep work, such as joinery and planing. The shop is located in an industrial area at the 495/95S junction. It's kind of convenient, kind of weird in the whole "industrial park thing". They have a large facility and ample parking. "Nice" is not the best term...maybe "efficient and practical" is appropriate. Make no mistake, Colonial Hardwoods is a wood shop. They don't really compete on other supplies, like screws and such. Nevertheless, in addition to a wide variety of woods, they also have some hardware and some wood prep materials, but this section of the shop is basic and might not have what you need. For instance, they have about five different paint brush choices. The employees at Colonial Hardwoods are really nice. It's a family shop. They aren't all related but they've been working there forever and might as well be related. It's a fun group. I liked the personal paintings, which are really impressive. The point of all this is that they'll take care of you. They return calls, they pick up the phone. It's worth it to deal with people who care. Honestly if you want sane wood suppliers in DC who care about you, this might be your only option. read more

I had a custom-built American cherry hardwood countertop made for my powder bathroom remodel. The owner was very helpful in making sure they did what I wanted. He also taught me a bit about hardwoods and helped in picking out the right wood slab for the project. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Since I found this place a year or so ago it's pretty much the only place I go for my woodworking projects. 5 stars, and I didn't even buy anything! I was looking for a large live-edge slab, but they didn't have it in stock. I especially like what Yuri said. Most places would say they'll order it for you. Yuri said he COULD order it, but it would be from a retailer and he would have to mark up that already marked up price, so it wouldn't be worth it to me. He told me they did have a slab , but it was already sold (and waaay bigger than the slab I needed). He then took me in the back to have a look at it. A gorgeous 15'x40" rosewood slab, impeccably finished. I then wandered around the "wood room" (two large warehouse rooms filled with almost anything you can imagine - even BIRD'S EYE POPLAR!). While they didn't have what I was looking for, the very friendly staff and excellent selection have guaranteed my return. *EDIT* I have since been back many times and actually purchased stuff on some of those occasions! The staff have continued providing excellent service and advice. And the times when i did just come in to peruse, i never felt pressured or guilty for not buying anything. Very good service for a wonderful price. I am a local business woman and my business is geared to meeting the special needs of any client and they did a wonderful job helping me do so. I needed to replace an older style bannister to a newer more modern one in an office in old town and what would have cost my client close to a grand they helped me do it in more than half the price. This place is great! We went in not knowing much about wood, but wanting to build a small desktop in a strange shape to fit in a corner. Ron helped us pick out the right wood for the project, and told us that they could build the desktop for us, which was great! The top is beautiful, exactly what I wanted. When we had issues attaching the legs at home, we brought everything back to the shop and Ron helped us figure out what we were doing wrong, find some workarounds for mistakes we made, and gave us some tips to make the process easier. The desk looks incredible. 10/10, definitely returning for any future projects we have. read more

Guess the crowd that knows about Colonial Hardwoods isn't into Yelp all that much. This place is amazing for those who need wood and things related to wood. My architectural friends and I come here for our wood needs, for large furniture projects or miscellaneous projects. They have foreign exotic and domestic, in all shapes, sizes and thinness. They can cut or trim or do other special work for you if you need. I got a great deal on various types of wood for my personal project and some great advice on wood working. I brought my friend who doesn't take to strangers easily, and she left raving about this place and the people on the car ride back. I think most people who come here know a bit about woodworking and tools, but even if you aren't that knowledgable, it's not an intimidating place since the people who work there are so friendly and helpful. read more

We couldn't be happier with our experience at Colonial Hardwoods. We went there for maple boards to make a dining table with. They had beautiful wood to choose from and it was reasonably priced. We had been intending to try our hand at putting the table together ourselves, but they quoted us a great price to make the top there and we happily scheduled the work. They did a great job and the table came out better than I imagined! They took the time to line up the wood grains in the frame to match with the boards on top so the sides looks like one thick piece of wood. They did a rough sanding of the table, which we then finished by fine sanding, staining, and sealing with poly. We also attached metal hairpin legs, but the place has blocks available for legs if we wanted wooden legs to match. We will definitely be back soon, as I have an idea for a console table that I am hoping they can help us with! Pictures of the table after their work and also the finished project below. read more

Best place to obtain hardwoods. CH will special order, help you with milling (if, needed) and are really great to deal with. Selection is great and what they do not have they can order. I have found the way they store their wood inventory is better than most hardwood suppliers in the region. It really helps they have a cabinet shop next to the wood storage. They tend to manage the wood inventory better since they use the same material. Really recommend Colonial Hardwoods for any size project. read more
