    Campsite 151

Awesome location and an unforgettable experience. This campsite is located next to lake Diablo, in middle of the North Cascades National Park. There is a cute little relaxing river flowing next to it as well. I think the campsites next to the stream are first come first basis(better to confirm). And there are so many hiking trails around it, the Thunderknob hiking trails is right across the road. Our campsite was 151 and it was just big enough to accomodate two 3 ppl tents. It came with a fire pit with small grill and a bench. It felt a little more private than some camp sites around. We had to do a reservation 2-3 weeks prior to our trip and the cost was $16. Restrooms were just 2mins away from the site. Some sites were smaller and could accomodate only one tent so I would definitely call them and confirm while doing the reservation about the lot size. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because the drinking water tap which was close to our campsite (151) was not functional. And some campsites were a little close to each other.Restrooms could be a maintained a little better but they were not very aweful either. Definitely a great location to camp at NCNP. Close to all touristy spots and very convenient for camping.

Approximately 8.2 miles round trip 1900 feet elevation gain, with the highest point 4900 feet. I do recommend getting there early, before 9am, as the parking lot is very small and fills quickly! 4 stars because of the crowds. The trail starts downhill which is a confidence booster especially when you are backpacking. But what goes down, must come up! The last mile is probably what classifies this hike as hard. Hiking up, over loose gravel and boulders and up to almost 5000 feet elevation is difficult for us non-Colorado living people. On the trail you cross many small creek beds that were almost all dried up when we went here at the end of the summer. There is plenty of water at the lake for water source. There are multiple well groomed areas for tents along the trail uphill from the lake. I appreciated these spots at night when the mosquitoes came out and we're a nuisance (only when getting water). Speaking of night... do dress for cold weather! You do get the breeze coming off of Shuksan's glaciers. Very little salmon berries left on the main trail but plenty of huckleberries left. Night time is beautiful. The sky is completely full of stars and the sound of waterfalls coming out of the glaciers is relaxing. No campfires allowed at the lake. Pack out trash and human and animal waste. Trailhead provides blue bags for this.

Rushing waterfalls augment the flanks of these enormous sheets of ice. The lake is a deep blue and there is plenty of flat space to find the perfect camp site. I initially booked a walk-in site since I was not up to speed on planning this time, meaning I would've had to park and then carry my gear to the site which was very not ideal for my short stay. Thankfully, I kept checking recreation.gov and was able to grab a more convenient drive-up site!! We arrived in the late afternoon on Thursday, checked out our campsite, set up the tent, and ventured over to the main Visitor Center which was a short drive or walk away. After dinner and a short evening hike, we returned to the site and hopped in the tent. While there was a fire pit in the campsite, there was a fire ban in place during our stay so no campfire for us. Boo hoo. I did, however, make full use of the picnic table in the morning which was helpful in packing up and of course used the bear box overnight for my scented items. We packed up and were out by sunrise to get an early start on our hike (Maple Pass Loop - highly recommend!) Overall, Newhalem Campground was clean and the sites were well marked, spacious (enough room for one tent and a vehicle which was what I needed, and surprisingly quiet, even during the peak summer season. While it's not the most remote or rugged campground in the park (not even close), it's a convenient basecamp especially if you're planning to hit the nearby trails or stop by the visitor center. If you can grab a site, go for it!

We stayed in walk-in sites in loop A and it felt like we were the only ones there. Each site has a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring. The bathrooms are large and clean. The campground connects to many hiking trails, including one that leads to the visitor center. You can stop by the river too! One note- the nearby dam has a siren that will go off if they turn on the water overflow. It went off at 10:30pm and scared us! But it just warns people along the river that the water level might raise suddenly.
